Canada / Extra Pair of Eyes/Help Needed Please (TURNER- Sheffield-Ottawa)
« on: Thursday 23 November 23 12:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, Long time since I've been on here, so be gentle!

I'm searching for information on the Turner Family, originally from Sheffield, Eng. Last known whereabouts Ottawa, Ontario.

Alice Turner (nee Bowers) born 1871 Sheffield, wife of John Thomas Turner, is seen on the 1911 Canadian Census, residing with her sister Lucy Stille (nee Bowers) and her husband and family

DETAILS: Ottawa City, Carleton, Ontario, Canada: Stille, Frederick C, Head, Born Sept 1879, aged 32, Born England, Civil Servant; Lucy Stille, Wife, Born Aug 1875 aged 36, Born England; Ellen Mabel Stille, Daughter, born Jan 1905, Ontario; Wilhelmina Stille, Daughter, aged 1907, aged 3, Born Ontario; Frederick Stille, Son, born Oct 1908, aged 2, Born Ontario; Winifred Stille, Daughter, Born Feb 1911, Ontario; Frederick W Bowers, Father, Widowed, born Nov 1845, aged 66, Born England; Alice Turner, Sister, Single, born Sept 1872 aged 39, Born England:

Lucy emigrated 1903, Alice is on a ship manifesto 1907, their father Fred W Bowers 1911

Alice and her estranged husband had one son John Thomas Turner born 1896 Sheffield. I havent found him on a ship's list going to Canada yet, but in 1917 he attested for the Canadian forces, listing himself as single, and his address was in Charleston, MA, USA. His NOK was listed as his mother Alice Turner, address 33 Dufferin Rd, New Edinburgh, Ottawa.

The next siting I have of John Thomas Junior was in a ship's list returning to Canada from England, in 1927, he is listed with his wife Emily Emelia (surname unknown) born c1894 Sheffield, and a daughter Phyllis Patricia born c1921 Ottawa, their returning address is listed as (what I decipher) as 434 Laurier Ave, Ottawa.  Their last address/relative in England is listed as Father, Mr ???? (Furness ?) 393 Manor Lane, Sheffield - see image attached, its a bit blurry.  ::) If anyone has a different view of the names/addresses, let me know

In 1921 & 1931 I found Alice working as a widowed Housekeeper for Thomas O Workman and his daughter.

I cant find John, Emily Phyllis in 1931 Census, nor the address listed in 1927, or any other trace of them, Phyllis was born in Ottawa C1921, cant find a birth for her and I am struggling to find wife Emily's surname pre marriage, or their marriage in England/Canada.

Can anyone help or point me in some direction of resources. I have plenty of Information on Lucy Stille nee Bower so not looking for that, just more on Alice and her son and his family.

Many thanks in Advance
Cheers

For Sale / Wanted / Events / Hand Held Portable Microfiche Reader FOR SALE
« on: Friday 17 March 17 09:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Im selling my hand held reader that cost me £120 plus postage a couple of years ago, its rarely been used as I purchased a cannon scanner that was capable of scanning my fiche shortly afterwards. Hence I have no use for it.  I lost the lens cap (think I left it at a records office somewhere ::) ) , but it still has its faux leather case which it has been kept  in - and in a pet free/smoke free home.

if anyone's interested it is on ebay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/192131505071?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2648

Armed Forces / Royal Marine "D D" Discharged Dead ?
« on: Tuesday 30 August 16 10:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi There
I have in my family a Royal Marine William Tivey born Portsmouth 1830c  - Lived in Derby most of his life (moved there after his father retired from the Navy himself) and he attested in the town June 1854. I have managed to get a copy of his naval record. It doesnt really give me much information other then his attestation and physical description.

In the 1861 census he is aboard the "Hydra" listed as "Wm Tivey" Private RN 28 years born Derby.
I havent found him in any other census and his record had the words in RED " 27 December 1861 D D in Cd Hydra"  (image attached)  I have been informed that this means he was Discharged Dead on this date?

Can someone clarify this and is there anyway of finding out what happened to him. Ive looked at the Deaths at Sea indexes and he isnt on there - Any suggestions ?

Thanks in advance

Australia / Help deciphering handwriting - District name and other details PLEASE
« on: Wednesday 30 March 16 10:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi Lovely Peeps
I need help with a mysterious lady.

I forked out some of my pennies yesterday to download a Victoria Marriage Certificate dated 1881 mainly because the lady in question is a complete mystery to me and as part of my one name study (Tivey/Tivy variant) I would like to find out exactly who she is.

On this marriage certificate (attached) she is listed as DORA WINIFRED TIVEY  a spinster born Pimlico England (I believe that is central London Westminster area ?). She married Johann Georg Luckmann  (on other indexes and online trees he is a Prussian named  Johan George Luehman)  Yet on the death index (1882 year) Dora is listed as FLORA WINIFRED LUCKMAN.  From the very poor handwriting on the cert I can just about make out that her father was WILLIAM TIVEY or Tivy Electric Manager ? and mother Mary Theresa Teague. On the death index her father is listed as William TINEY her mother Mary Theresa Teague.

The thing is - if she was born London England  then her birth isnt listed as Tiney, Tivey or Tivy. There isnt any marriage listed in England for a Mary Theresa Teague either (it could be pre 1837 not sure) there are several William Tivey/Tivy who could fit the bill.

Anyhow - there are online trees that suggest Flora or Dora was previously married to a Gustav Francis Peterson/Petersen in 1872 (no idea where) and had children Flora Alice, Arthur Francis, George Victor and Edith Florence. So why she was listed as a spinster is beyond me  :0  - but not unusual - I have a couple of others that were widows and were listed as spinster or bachelor for some reason.

So far I have found (in the Victoria Indexes)

BIRTH  1874 PETERSON Flora  Mother: Flora (Tivey) Father Gustave
DEATH 1875 PETERSON Florance Mother: Flora Winifred (Tivey)
BIRTH  1875 PETERSON Arthur Francis Mother: Flora (Tivey) Father: Frank
BIRTH  1877 PETERSON George Victor Mother: Flora Winifred (Tivey) Father George
BIRTH 1878 PETERSEN Edith Florence Mother: Flora (Tivey) Father George

So (sorry to be so long-winded as per usual) what im really looking for is anyone with a sharp eye and/or knowledge of Victoria that can decipher the district they wed in, the addresses or places they gave on the cert,  whether you are in agreement with parent names and if anyone can come up with a marriage to Mr Peterson or a death for him?  Any other detail for the children or her parents in Australia.
There are so many references to her as FLORA TIVEY that Im convinced she is indeed a TIVEY -I just have to find her origins now - Can anyone fill in the gaps ?

Your help is gratefully appreciated.

Australia / Convict Death (Tasmania?) after 1852 - Help Please
« on: Wednesday 16 September 15 09:35 BST (UK)  »
HIYALL   ;D

Im trying to find the death of one of my convicts and need help please.

WILLIAM TIVEY, born 21st March 1804 in Wormley, Hertfordshire, the son of James Tivey and Alice Pell,  was convicted of Theft at the Herford Assizes and sentenced to life/deported on the Woodman in 1825 (arriving in the colony 1826)  I have found a few records here and there regarding his crime, voyage, sentence, conduct sheet etc etc.

I know that he married a fellow convict named Eliza Hollins in 1835, New Norfolk, Buckinghamshire, Tas, and I also know that they had two children William and Eliza who both died in early infancy. I also know that he was granted a conditional pardon (no return to GB) in 1840 (found several newspapers on Trove too). Eliza his wife died "after a visitation from God" in 1843.

I am trying to track down a death for William but havent managed to find one. I found two "departures" from Tasmania to Melbourne, Victoria in 1852 the last one being in October, BUT after that he just disappears into thin air.

All help gratefully appreciated ??

Hiyall

After finally tracking down one of my brick walls :)
I have found that Charles Tivey born 1840 Wormley, Hertfordshire, England, (a gardener by trade) was in Jersey by the 1871 census (I have him in Herts previous to that)  Im looking for a marriage for he and his wife Armance ??? - can anyone tell me where I can buy certificates, if they married Jersey? Or if anyone lives near the Jersey Archive, could someone do a look up please or get a copy for me please?
I have managed to track down his death 1897 Neauphle-le-Château, but if anyone could find out anything more about Charles and his wife and offspring I would be most thnakful.

Cheers

Hiyall

I am trying to trace the Willimot (sic) family who were based in Leicestershire who can be found in Rothley 1841 - HO107 Piece: 595; Book: 18; Folio: 4; Page: 3; transcribed as Willimore
Thomas aged 55
Sarah Aged 55
William Aged 15
Elizabeth Aged 10

I know that Thomas died in 1848 - burial was at Thurcaston 5 December 1848 - Aged 72 of Rothley.
Thomas was widower on his marriage to Sarah Tivey (25 Feb 1816 Thurcaston cum Cropston)
Sarah was also previously married and widowed her surname was originally Boyer.
In 1794 she had an illegimate child with Edward Hussar of Ulverscroft she resided in Markfield at that time. A year later she was listed in the quarter sessions as having another illegitimate child with William Tivey (a widower), named Elizabeth 1795 - she died aged 11 yrs, buried at Thurcaston

In 1797 she married William Tivey in Markfield, they had two children who survived infancy Mary in 1805 and Sarah who was baptized 6 months after her fathers death (June 1807) in January 1808.

I am assuming that William & Elizabeth were children of Thomas and Sarah and there could be others.

Essentially I am looking for Sarah (formerly Tivey nee Boyer)in 1851 or a death, further marriage for her  and Marriages and whereabouts of William and Elizabeth after 1841.
Does anyone have access to the Rothley registers - Sarah wasnt buried at Thurcaston under the Willimot name (or variants)
All help gratefully appreciated, as usual
Cheers
