« on: Wednesday 28 August 19 18:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi I am looking for the parents of George Birks baptised on Oct 4th 1814 St Peter's Derbyshire. They are John and Anne, living at Spring Gardens and he is a crate maker, but I cannot find any other info on them. I cannot find any other births for John and Anne so assuming that George was an only child. George was living in Ilkeston Derbyshire on the 1841 census. Thanks to anyone in advance for any info  ???

The Common Room / missing 2nd great grandad
« on: Friday 09 August 19 15:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi i'm trying to find out what happened to James Cosby 1873-1937 born Longton Stoke on trent. He married Mary Lizzie Ball in 1901 at St James Longton, they went on to have 4 children Annie 1902-1902, Doris 1903 -1992, Harry 1905 and May 1907-1988. Mary died in 1910 and the children are on the 1911 census living with their Aunt and family and also Grandmother. Here's a puzzle on this census there is also an Henry Clowes age 44 married with 2 children,(wife not on here), now Harry's full name is Clowes Cosby, i can't fine any other records for this Henry. Also when May marries in 1931 she uses the name Clowes not Cosby, as she does when her daughter is born. James pops up again with a death in 1937. If anyone can unravel this mystery i would be very grateful thanks

The Lighter Side / step relationships
« on: Monday 21 May 12 10:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
My Son has just got married, and my husband is his stepdad (although he dosent call him that). My in-laws asked what relation our Daughter-in-law would be to them, and i said Granddaughter as they call my Son their Grandson, they said not. If my Son is their Step Grandson, then she must be their Step Granddaughter, but as we dont refer to being Step whatever they should call her Granddaughter. I know its a bit confusing  ???, but my Son has always called them Nan and Grandad. Hope someone can clarify this.

                 Many Thanks
                    Maxine

Graveyards and Gravestones / great grandads grave
« on: Sunday 03 July 11 14:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi, We are looking for the grave of our great grandad, Michael Masterson who died in 1911. He was buried in Longton cemetery in Stoke-on-trent. After making a phone call to the bereavement office, i was told i would need to go to Hanley libary to search the records. I found the entry and had it printed out, and it gave the number of grave space (11577). Our problem is how do we know where to look for the grave space, as we have no idea in which section of the cemetery it would be. There is a map at the gates of the cemetery showing all the plots (10 rows of 20 graves in each plot). Do we just have to work out which plot would have grave space 11577, there is never anyone working or around to ask when we go down. He was born in Dublin, and was Roman Catholic but have looked in that section and could not find it. Hope someone might have any ideas of where to go from here. Many thanks in advance. Regards Maxine.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / What year
« on: Thursday 30 June 11 15:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Please could anyone help to date these photos, we don't know who they are other than they are relations of Edith Nicklin (nee Need) born 1915 Staffs. We think they are from the Need side of the family, as they were with Edith's belongings after she died. The possibilites we have are her mother Annie Clewlow born 1895-1980, grandmother (maternal) Annie Copestake born 1868-1951 and grandmother (paternal) Louisa(Sissy) Need maiden name unknown 1871-1922. We are also unsure if the woman in the white blouse, is the same woman in the other photo, and wheather it would be a sister or her mother with her. Whoever she is she looks exactly like my niece Melanie who was born in 1973, hence wanting to put names to faces. They are both postcards, the 1 with 2 women was taken by I Powler's studios, Longton, Shelton & Newcastle. The other by Stafford Studio Co, 1 Gold St, Stafford St, Longton. There is also some writing on the back, which we cannot make out. Many thanks to anyone who can help. Regards Maxine.
