hi, can any one help me find my ancestors?. my father was Reginald Marchant /Merchant, born St, Mark's Parish, Gloucester about 1886/1890 . He grew up in Longlevens , went to sea and jumped ship in Pt. Lincoln, South Australia before the 1st World War. On his marraige certificate he states his father as Walter Charles Marchant/Merchant, hard to read the hand writing . I don't know what age he was when he went to sea nor when he jumped ship. Dad often spoke about having a sister and two brothers, but can't remember their names. sister possibly Gladys? would appreciate any help. thanks,     Jeannie

Australia / South Australian Lookups Offer
« on: Tuesday 03 May 05 09:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks, I can assist with lookups on South Australian Births 1842 - 1906 and Deaths 1842 - 1915. I have the cds at home and can give a fast response. I can also provide some great website addresses that have helped me with my own research.

Once a week I volunteer at a local library as a Genealogy assistant and can help with births 1906 - 1928 and marriages from 1842 - 1937. Unfortunately those requests will take longer!

Mayo / Lindsays of Killala
« on: Tuesday 03 May 05 08:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am researching my Lindsay ancestors. I would love to make contact with anyone else researching the same line or if anyone can help with lookups to verify my information.

George Lindsay born 1766 married Jennie Magee. Second wife Euphemia Gregg. Several children were born from both marriages. I am a descendant from George and Jennie Lindsays son Stuart Lindsay born 8 March 1819. Stuart came to Australia around 1848 onboard the Forfarshire. He married Charlotte Brock and had several children here in South Australia.

George Lindsay (1766) parents were William Lindsay and Margaret Elizabeth Ewing.

If anyone is able to assist with dates of births deaths or marriages or has a connection to this Lindsay line please dont hesitate to contact me as I have much information to share.

Thankyou

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Dowleans/Finney - did they have children?
« on: Tuesday 03 May 05 08:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Just wondering if anyone is able to do a lookup for me please.

I am wondering if anyone is able to lookup any births to these folk:

Albert Mirabeau Dowleans and Anne Greenway Finney. They married October 21st 1856 at St Marys, Guildford. I have no evidence of these two ever having children. I have no dates for deaths either.

I know Albert was previously married to an Ellen Maling (nee Barons or Barous) in India and they had children Olivia Mirabella 1846 (she married Arthur Hewitt in India), Albertina Mirabella Ellen 1849 (she married Henry Ogbourne in India), Louisa Charlotte Mirabella 1851 and Albert Mirabeau 1853 (My ggg Grandfather who came to Australia 1873.

I found this marriage of Albert and Anne and I am assuming either Ellens death or a divorce for the same man to remarry. I would love to know what happened to Ellen - I have no clue where or when she was born or died. Neither do I have information on Anne Greenway Finney.

I do know one of Alberts daughters Albertina Mirabella Dowleans lived in Devon. She married a Henry Ogbourne and had children. As far as Albert and Anne go I have found nothing other than a marriage date and place. Any help with any Dowleans information would be greatful.

Thankyou

Hi, I am wondering if someone is able to help me with a lookup on a few things please:

Charles Augustus Smith born 26 June 1882, Gorleston
Parents Adelaide Louisa Smith (nee Bridge)born 16 March 1864 in Gorleston and father Henry Charles Smith born approx 1856-62. They married July 8 1880. Not sure where Henry was born or where they married though.

Henry Charles Smith was a fisherman who drowned at sea. He was on board the boat named "Wildfire". Apparently there was a very bad storm. He died I believe March 6 1883.

I am wondering if anyone is able to verify or even offer some more information on this line for me.

Adelaide Louisa Bridge did remarry a Wharton Frederick Cutts, who was on board the same boat when Henry Smith drowned.

Any help would be so greatful

Sussex Lookup Requests / Brocks of Chichester
« on: Tuesday 03 May 05 07:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am researching my Brock ancestors who came from Chichester. The family im tracing are:

Charles Brock born c1795 - d1835 and his wife Hannah Maria Triggs born c 1799 - 1876.

Charles and Hannah Maria married 19 August 1821 at St Pancras & subdeanery, Chichester West Sussex.

Children:

Charles born c 1823
William born c1825 died an infant
Harriett born 1827 - moved to Australia with her mother
James born 1829 died an infant
Charlotte born 1831 - moved to Australia with her mother. Charlotte was my ggggGrandmother.
Maria Lucy born 1833 died 1918 - moved to Australia with her mother.
David born 1835 died an infant

I am just wondering if there is anyone out there who is also tracing this line - I have much information to share on the 3 surviving daughters.

I am also wondering if anyone is able to do a lookup on Hannah Maria Triggs? We are not 100% sure if that was her last name or not. Hannah and daughters (and I think even Charles her husband) came to Australia on board the Buckinghamshire around 1839.

Any help with dates and places to verify my information would be so very appreciated. I would love to go further back on Charles Brocks family also if anyone out there is able to help me.

Thankyou

Gloucestershire / Newbie
« on: Saturday 30 April 05 03:05 BST (UK)  »

Hello from Down Under! I am new here this is my first post. I have been researching my ancestors for over 5 years now. I only found out about this site this morning. Looks great!

I have alot of ancestors from the UK and surrounds. The one line Ive had no luck with is from Gloucestershire.

I am researching my grandfather Reginald Merchant (or Marchant) and his father Walter Charles Merchant) or Marchant).
I have found my grandather Reginalds Australian Army Records on the National Archives site and he has listed his birth details as St Marks Parish, Gloster, England.

Working his date of birth out has been tricky as he lied so many times. Its somewhere between February 1 1886 and February 1 1890. Reginald listed on his marriage certificate in 1941 as his fathers name being Walter Charles Merchant. On the same certificate Reginalds last name is Merchant and Marchant. In his later years he lived as a Marchant, myself being one.

As a child he told my mother a story how he 'bumped his age up' to get into the army. He apparently sailed on a ship named Glenavon or Glenalvon - to Australia. It was the only all British manned ship to sail into those waters around 1911 so the story goes!. He then absonded and stayed in Australia. To this day I have no proof of his story - I have found the ships but not the evidence that it docked where he said it did.

If anyone is able to assist me in either lookups or any good websites to check out, please feel free to do so!

Thankyou in advance,

Kylee
