Durham / Help with death by drowning
« on: Monday 02 October 17 10:36 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to discover how long it would be likely to take for a body lost at sea from a fishing boat off Hartlepool to be washed up at Redcar. Apparently it's a distance of around 7 nautical miles. The (fictional) incident would have happened in June, if that makes a difference for tides at that time of year. Many thanks. Louise

The Common Room / Christmas holiday 1886
« on: Saturday 17 September 16 18:48 BST (UK)  »
Is it likely that a live-in barmaid working in the south of England in 1887 would have been allowed by her employer to have 4-5 days off over Christmas so she could visit her family in the north of England who she hadn't seen for 3 years?

Durham / Shipping trade between Hartlepool and Australia 1880s?
« on: Wednesday 10 February 16 08:23 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me if there was any trade between Hartlepool and Australia in the 1880's?  I believe ships went to America, Russia, Scandanavia but I haven't found any evidence of Australia (for the wool trade?)  Thanks.

Australia / Sydney Census/Electoral Rolls 1898-1904 Margaret MASKELL
« on: Monday 09 February 15 15:55 GMT (UK)  »
Margaret Merryweather MASKELL was living in Napolean Street, City, Sydney in May 1900 when she caught the bubonic plague.  She recovered.  Can anyone tell me whether she appears in census or electoral rolls from 1898 when she moved to Sydney (probably the Rocks area) from Tasmania until April 1904 when she returned to England.  She was born in 1867.  I'm not sure how the census or electoral rolls worked in Oz in those days.  Thanks.

The Common Room / Cost of passage from England to Australia 1888
« on: Friday 14 February 14 05:45 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know approximately how much a 3rd class ticket from England to Australia would have cost in 1888?  My ancestor may have gone directly from eg. Liverpool to Melbourne or taken a ship from the North East and then via a European port.  Also, was it all by steamship by then and how long would it have taken.  Many thanks.
