Cumberland Lookup Requests / Question for History Buffs
« on: Sunday 06 October 13 04:12 BST (UK)  »
My 3 X great grandfather, Hugh Shields, was born @ 1782 in America, according to the 1851 Census. However, his first child, Elizabeth, was born @ 1825 in Penrith, Cumberland. His other children were born in Penrith, Wigton and Lancaster, Lancashire. His wife, Ann O'Neil was born in Ireland! I haven't been able to find a record of the marriage yet.

My question is about British troops who fought in the American Revolution. I understand that some soldiers brought their wives and families with them. My supposition is that Hugh returned to Cumberland with his parents when the war ended. Either that, or Hugh's family were Loyalists who returned to England. Would there be any records of British soldiers who fought in the war?  Hugh's first son was named Joseph, so it's possible his father was also Joseph.

Any help would really be appreciated, as I've hit a real dead end here!
Thanks, Seattle

US Lookup Requests / 1994 Obit Bernard Darby
« on: Saturday 14 April 12 23:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone look up an obituary for Bernard Darby in Philadelphia?  Social Security records show he died on 1/15/1994.

He was born 7/10/1947 in Philadelphia - parents Bernard Darby and mother Rose, who died in childbirth or shortly after.  His father was in the Royal Navy and was born in Kent, England.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Penrith Marriage - Shields/O'Neil
« on: Saturday 09 April 11 06:32 BST (UK)  »
After a long break, I'm back on the trail of my Shields ancestors!

Is there anyone who visits the Carlisle Records Office that can look up a marriage at St. Andrews parish church in Penrith? I've found a reference PR110/1

I'm looking for a marriage between Hugh Shields and Ann O'Neil in 1823/24.  Their first child, Elizabeth Shields was born 1824/25 in Penrith.

Many thanks,
Seattle

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / 1911 Census Lookup Please - Cox
« on: Monday 01 November 10 16:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

If someone has access to the 1911 Census, could you please look for the following?

Harry Cox  born 1890/1891
Unfortunately, I don't know if his first name is Henry, Harold or ??

He married Lily Morris in 1913 in Pontardawe and I believe he was born in the area - possibly Ystradgynlais.

He died 1 Nov, 1918, while in the army.  One account says of wounds and the other in the influenza epidemic.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Seattle

Lancashire Lookup Requests / General Question re: parish records
« on: Friday 03 September 10 03:07 BST (UK)  »
My great grandfather, Oliver's, parents were Thomas and Ann Ormrod, according to the catholic church record of his marriage to Ann Rogan, in Dukinfield in 1841 (after the census was taken).

I have been unable to find Oliver with his parents on the 1841 Census.  I do find an Oliver living with Thomas and Esther Ormrod in nearby Newton.

My question is:

If Oliver's natural mother Ann died before the marriage took place, would her name be recorded, instead of his possible stepmother, Esther?

I know it's a strange question, but I'm grasping at straws here!!

Many thanks to you all,
Seattle

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Parish Registers Penrith
« on: Wednesday 28 July 10 04:26 BST (UK)  »
I'm thinking about ordering a microfilm from the LDS Family Search organization in Salt Lake City.  Can anyone tell me what information I might find on the record of a marriage about 1825 at St. Andrew's Church, Penrith?  Would it only be the names of the bride and groom, the minister and witnesses? I'm hoping for the father's names - any chance?

Thanks,
Seattle

Any help would be appreciated!

Glamorganshire / Job Description/Coal Mine?
« on: Saturday 17 July 10 04:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've just found that my grandfather lived in Penrhiwceiber in 1911 and was listed as a carpenter, below ground.  Can anyone tell me what the difference is between a timberman and a carpenter, specific to coal mines? I'm wondering what he actually did in the mine.  In later years he was a carpenter, cabinet maker and wheelwright.  Also, would there have been only one mine in Penrhiwceiber, or many?

Many thanks,
Seattle
