Glamorganshire / Phillip and Margaret Thomas
« on: Wednesday 11 November 20 19:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

A bit of a long post. I am hoping to get some help finding out what happened to Phillip and Margaret Thomas (my 5 x great grandparents).

There is a likely marriage for Phillip on the 14th January 1806 to Margaret Griffith at Llanedi parish church in the presence of Thomas William and William Jones.

Their son Daniel was baptised on the 12th January 1809 and daughter Sarah baptised on the 10th November 1811 in Llanedi Tynewydd Chapel. I haven’t found reference to any other children.

The 1841 census (HO107/1379/39/10) shows Phillip and Margaret in the Hendy Bridge Tollgate in Llanedi (Carmarthenshire). Phillip and Margaret both are recorded as 60 years old (looks like a case of rounded down ages) with their son Daniel (30, carpenter) and John Thomas (6). Plenty of interesting information available online about this tollgate for those interested in the Rebecca Riots.

Their son Daniel married Mary Wright (née Beddow) at Llanelli parish church on the 12th April 1842. Daniel was living in Llanelli and his father Phillip is recorded as a joiner.

I have found a death certificate for a Phillip Thomas who died on the 28th November 1846 in Bolgoed Cottage in nearby Pontarddulais aged 66. This Phillip was a labourer and died from debility. His death was registered by John Williams of the Fountain inn who was present at the death.

Not definitive but likely. Further support comes from the 1851 census (HO107/1379/39/10) for a Margaret Thomas living in Bolgoed Cottage (widow, age 75, born Pembrey, Carmarthenshire).

If the correct Margaret, this would suggest a birth year of around 1776. I have not found an 1861 census entry, so I have narrowed my search between 1851 and 1861 for a possible death.

There was one possible death in the Swansea district – 1857 (Apr-Jun; 11a; 312; Age 83) but this showed a death in Oystermouth (Gower), wife of David Thomas, general labourer.
Another possible death was in Llanelly district – 1855 (Apr-Jun; 11a; 338; Age 80) but this showed a death in Kidwelli, wife of William, farmer.

The son Daniel and his family lived in Llanelli in 1851 (HO107/2468/133/19) and in 1861 (RG9/4111/54/14). I do not know what happened to their daughter Sarah.

I have not found a burial for Phillip or a Margaret in the area yet.

Thanks for those who have read this far.

Could anyone possibly find the correct death or burial for Margaret or a burial for Phillip?

Thank you – Joshua

Australia / Reverend William Rees
« on: Saturday 17 October 15 15:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

This is a bit of a long shot, but I am searching for any information relating to William Rees. The only information I have for William is as follows:

He was born around 1838 in Llanedy, Carmarthenshire, Wales, UK to David Rees and Mary (nee Hughes). He had 6 siblings John, Mary, Sarah, David, Ann and Margaret. I have William living with his parents in the Wales 1851 census as a labourer's son. However after this date, I have no reference of him until the 28th December 1917 in a newspaper article about the golden anniversary of his sister Margaret's marriage. It states "One of her brothers is Rev. William Rees, the Australian preacher and lecturer."

I am very curious to find out any information about William, especially due to the large gap between 1851 and 1917. I am presuming William is alive at the time of writing for the article as other siblings who have passed away were not mentioned.

I'm hoping someone with more experience of Australian records can shed some light on this elusive relative of mine.

Thanks,
Josh.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Help dating a picture
« on: Tuesday 14 January 14 19:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I have come across another old photo in my grandmother's collection.

As you can see, its a very bad photo of a picture. So I was hoping some very helpful person could help date the picture? Is the original a painting or a photo? I can not tell. And my third question, how old would you age this lady at? Hopefully someone can offer some suggestions to me, thank you.

Josh

Glamorganshire / Llewellyn family of Merthyr
« on: Tuesday 18 June 13 10:33 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I have a Hannah Llewellyn marrying a John Davies on the 27th October 1884 at Merthyr Tydfil register office. Hannah is 19yo, the residence is given as 2 Taff Street, Caepantywyll, Merthyr, and she is the daughter of Oswell Llewellyn, iron moulder. Witnesses are William Harris and Elizabeth Morgans.

I am hoping that someone can locate Hannah with her parents on the 1881 census or any mention of Oswell at all.

Hopefully others will have better luck as I'm struggling to find them.
Regards, Josh.

Hello, I have recently found 2 photos of my great grandparents. However I had to take photos of the photos, and I was hoping if it is possible to improve the quality of them. Is there any way to remove the reflection of my hands on my grandfather's photo and the light bulb on the hat of my grandmother? I have no idea how to go about it myself.
Many thanks in advance, Joshua.

Carmarthenshire / Mary Hugh Llanelly
« on: Thursday 13 December 12 20:23 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for the baptism of a Mary Hugh who was born at around 1811 in Llanelly. I am also looking for her marriage to David Rees. Their first son John was born at about 1835, so I am assuming the marriage would be around that date. In the 1841, the family are living at Llanedy, so the marriage could possibly be there?
Thanks, Josh.

Somerset / Surname Stook and Payne/Paine
« on: Tuesday 04 September 12 16:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have been searching this line of the family and there has been one thing that has confused me. The family surname is Stook, but throughout various census' and bmd certificates, the surname has sometimes been Payne or Paine.
My ancestor Mary Anna Stook was born 1879 in Creech St Michael, the surname stays Stook until she gets married to a William Mitchell in 1900, where her surname is Payne. Her father is also recorded as George Payne, and her sister Emily (a witness) is also Payne.

Mary's father George was born about 1847 in Creech St Michael, his name stays consistent until the 1871 census where he now a Payne. And then jumps back to Stook in the 1881 census onwards to 1911. His first son Thomas' surname was registered as Paine in the birth index in 1867, also Henry in 1871 is registered as Paine. Also a daughter Emily has her name as Payne on her marriage certificate.

George's father was James Stook born about 1818/19 in Spaxton (well one of the birth places he gave in various census') He has his surname as Paine/Payne in the 1871 and 1881 census. Also on the baptism on one of his son's John in 1856, it says "John Paine, child of James Stook and Hannah". Other children and grandchildren of James continued to use the name Payne/Paine a various points in their lives.

I was hoping for some help or some suggestions as to the reason behind all of this?

Regards, Joshua
