Armed Forces / Military Details
« on: Sunday 02 May 21 00:28 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find details of my father who served in WW2.  He was in the 8th Army Royal Engineers from 1939 and I believe he was a driver.  He served in North Africa and had the Africa Star and he landed in Normandy D Day plus 1.  He was mentioned in dispatches at some point but he would never speak about his time during WW2.  I would love to know why he was mentioned in dispatches.  My searches on line have so far not lead to anything.  His full name was Leonard Douglas Baker, born in Poplar 1918.

The Common Room / Ancestry Subscriptions
« on: Sunday 10 January 21 22:08 GMT (UK)  »
Have thought about subscribing to Ancestry but can you tell me what you get for the money. Do you actually get access to birth certificates etc or just general information.  I have been tracing back my family for quite a few years now but having lived in New Zealand for the past 14 years, the cost is rather high in comparison to our income so I wanted to make sure it would actually be helpful and useful for expanding my search.

Family History Beginners Board / Can records be changed back
« on: Monday 19 August 19 07:52 BST (UK)  »
I know this is not Ancestry related but I wonder if any of you wonderful people can advise on a situation.
I had a son to my first marriage who was born in 1975.  That marriage ended and I married for a second time.  My first husband suggested it would be better if my new husband brought up our son as his own.  To cut a long story short my son was adopted into my new marriage.  I did not realise at the time that although I am his birth mother, I would have to adopt my own son into the new marriage.  His name was subsequently changed.  Several years later,  much to my dismay I visited what was Somerset House and looked up his birth and there is a handwritten entry noting that he is now entered into  the adopted child register.  All indication that I am his birth mother now gone.  He changed his name back  to his birth name many years ago but we would both like the entry into the adopted child register to either be removed or it be noted somewhere that his adoptive and birth mother are the same person,  this situation has caused problems in obtaining documentation, cannot recall what it was but am checking with my son,

Aberdeenshire / Clifton House, Insch, Aberdeenshire
« on: Wednesday 17 July 19 11:25 BST (UK)  »
Having done some research on my maternal family tree, I have come across many entries from other people of family member being listed as resident at Clifton House Insch Aberdeenshire.  My great grandmother has this listed as her address in her bible.  Would anyone be able to find out what Clifton House was as there appear to have been a lot of people residing there in the late 1800,s and early 1900’s.  Thank you.

Family History Beginners Board / Alexis Robb to George Furze
« on: Tuesday 26 February 19 22:59 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandmother Alexis Robb born in Premnay Aberdeenshire 1859 and died in Romford in 1950.  She had at least 8 children including my grandfather Ernest Lewis or Louis Furze and her husband is shown as George Furze but there appear to be no marriage records for them at all.  I suppose it is possible that they never married but I think that would be unusual for that time in history.  Is there any reason why their marriage record is not traceable?

Family History Beginners Board / Fifield family
« on: Tuesday 26 February 19 22:55 GMT (UK)  »
Continuing with my family tree, I seem to have come to a dead end with my great grandfather on my mothers side.  He was Thomas Edward Fifield born around 1861 and married an Eliza Jane Pepper.  I an unable to trace any entries of his mother or father.  The family hail from Stepney and Poplar.

Family History Beginners Board / Clifton House
« on: Sunday 23 December 18 03:15 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandmother was born in Insch Aberdeenshire.  My cousin back in England has her bible with the address Clifton House Insch.  I have googled Clifton House but nothing comes up for that area.  Can anyone find details of what Clifton House was.  I believe she was at one point a Cook but that was in the town of Alford Aberdeenshire. Just curious as to what Clifton House was.  The bible contains all the births of her children, quite a few of them, with their dates which my cousin will let me have after the Christmas holidays.  My great grandmother was Alexis Robb born in Premnay Aberdeenshire in 1859 who then married a George Furze.
