Ayrshire / Dickson in Dunlop, Ayrshire
« on: Saturday 06 September 08 13:34 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for descendants of Jacob Dickson and Annie Thomson who lived in Dunlop Ayrshire til about 1951 or so possibly longer.  Jacob was born to Alexander Grierson Dickson and Mary Shennan in Mouswald, Dumfriesshire 1886 and died in I believe Dumfries in 1969 but is buried in Dunlop Cemetery with his wife Annie, daughter of John Thomson and Maggie Wilson, born 1888 in Ayr, died in Dunlop in 1951. They had at least 1 son that I can find, John Thomson Dickson b 1912 died 1976 in Dunlop, also buried there. John married Margaret Boyd (1913-1974) and they had at least 2 known sons, one Hugh Boyd Dickson (1943-1945) and the other John McTavish Dickson born 1941 in Dunlop.   This line is not mine but Alexander G Dickson was my Great Grandfather, Thomas Dickson's (1856-1932) brother and I have not been too successful in finding any descendants in my direct line so am looking to sibling lines.  I have my Dicksons currently back to mid 18th Century.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Kerry / Egan of Ardfert
« on: Tuesday 09 January 07 00:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi looking for Patrick Egan (or Patrick Michael Egan) born about 1882 in Ardfert (we believe) left Ireland for Australia, came to Ipswich, Queensland and married Agnes Mary O'Shea (Shea), my G Grandmother in 1904.  He died in 1915 and my G Grandmother remarried.  I am descended from the 2nd marriage to Albert Baker in 1922.

Have no idea on Patrick's family in Kerry and am hoping someone maybe have some info on him and his family.

Any assistance would be appreciated.  I have other Egan lines in the tree but no evidence of where they originate.

Thanks

Mick Dickson

Limerick / Shea / O'Shea of Doon, Limerick
« on: Tuesday 09 January 07 00:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Trying to find info and anyone looking at the family of  a  John Shea and Mary Carroll, late 18th - early to mid 19th Century in Cappermore (I think) in the parish of Doon in Limerick.

As far as we know they had 4 children:
Patrick b c1808 Cappawhite (??), d 1883 Walloon, Ipswich, Queensland, Australia
John b. c 1815 Cappamore
Winifred b c1821 Cappamore, d. 1886 Ipswich, Queensland, Australia
James b. c 1826 Cappamore d. 1883 Ipswich, Queensland, Australia

All 3 children, Patrick, Winifred & James migrated to Queensland between 1840 and 1862. Patrick with his wife Mary Portley b c 1807 d. 1894 and 5 children.  Winifred with her son William Meehan in 1861, she was married to James Fitzgerald and finally James in 1859.  In 1873 they all changed their surname to O'Shea so I have people born Shea and married and died O'Shea.

If anyone could give me a hand with these I'd much appreciate it.

Cheers

Mick

Dumfriesshire / James Dickson & Elizabeth Edgar of Mouswald, Dalton & USA
« on: Sunday 15 October 06 00:06 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping someone can help me with confirming that I have the right couple.

JAMES DICKSON  was born 30/03/1812 in Mouswald, Dumfries, Scotland.  He possibly married ELIZABETH EDGAR 27/11/1833 in Mouswald, Dumfries.  She was born Abt. 1812 (could be earlier SWAG* in use), unknown POB and died about 06/03/1852 in New York, USA according to Dumfries newspaper obit.  I have no idea on her parents or siblings and would like to find which EDGARs she belongs to.

Children of JAMES DICKSON and ELIZABETH EDGAR are:
   i.   MARGARET DICKSON, b. 17/08/1834, Mouswald, Dumfries, Scotland.
ii.   THOMAS DICKSON, b. Abt. 1836, Mouswald, Dumfries.
iii.    MARY DICKSON, b. Abt. 1838, Mouswald, Dumfries, Scotland.
iv.   RICHARD DICKSON, b. 12/03/1841, Dalton, Dumfries, Scotland.
   v.   HENRY DICKSON, b. 07/01/1843, Dalton, Dumfries, Scotland.
vi.   JOHN FELL DICKSON, b. 15/02/1845, Dalton, Dumfries, Scotland.

My reasoning for the possible union is that the 2nd & 3rd children could be named after James's parents Thomas Dickson & Mary Glendinning and Richard (No. iv) is also his grandfathers name.  John Fell was the Joiner husband of an aunt of his, Jean or Jane Dickson.  James was a Blacksmith according to the 1841 Census like many in his family.

I believe that they migrated to the US, obviously between 1845 and 1852 and I am unaware of what happened to them after that or if any of the children stayed in Scotland, most likely Margaret if anyone.  There are also possiblity of other children not found yet.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Dumfriesshire / Dickson Marriage in Caerlaverock 1768, where is Byers?
« on: Friday 11 November 05 21:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

My family is trying to work past our biggest roadblock we have found in our quest for ancestors.

We have an extract (below) from the OPR of Carlaverock for the marriage of my g-g-g-g grandparents, Richard Dickson and Elspeth Dickson there on April 7 1768.   It  says that Richard is from Mousewald (well it looks like that anyway) and that Elspeth is the daughter of John Dickson in Byers.  Other Dickson marriages on the same record page also give places like 'in Blackshaw' etc.

Does anyone have any idea where Byers is or was?  The closest I have come is an old Barony in East Lothian.  Someone has said it maybe a farm or something in the parish.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Kirkcudbrightshire / Dicksons of Kirkbean
« on: Wednesday 02 November 05 09:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm looking for any information on the following Dickson family who I believe lived in the Kirkbean area at Gillhead in the late 1800s and early 1900 and possibly beyond.

1.  JAMES CAMPBELL (4) DICKSON  (JACOB (3), THOMAS (2), RICHARD (1)) was born 15 Dec 1853 in Torthorwald, Dumfries, and died 04 May 1927 in Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright.  He married AGNES FRASER 03 Dec 1884 in Annan, Dumfries, daughter of ROBERT FRASER and AGNES DUFF.  She was born Abt. 1853 in Closeburn, Dumfries, and died 14 Dec 1925 in Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright.

More About JAMES CAMPBELL DICKSON:
Occupation: Blacksmith

Children of JAMES DICKSON and AGNES FRASER are:
   i.   FRANCIS WILLIAM5 DICKSON, b. 24 Oct 1885, Closeburn, Dumfries.
ii.   JACOB DICKSON, b. 04 Aug 1887, Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright.
iii.   AGNES DICKSON, b. 03 Jun 1889, Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright; d. 23 Dec 1889, Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright.

Notes for AGNES DICKSON:
Died @ Gillhead of Croup (illness duration 2 days)

iv.   JANE WELLS DICKSON, b. 03 Oct 1890, Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright.
   v.   ROBERT FRASER DICKSON, b. 09 Aug 1892, Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright.
vi.   JAMES DICKSON, b. 09 Oct 1894, Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright.
vii.   JOHN FRASER DICKSON, b. 25 Jul 1896, Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright.

I believe that possibly all four sons were in WW 1, with two serving with the KOSB and one with A&SH.  One having died, Pte J Dickson KOSB and is remembered on the Kirkbean WWI memorial.   James Campbell Dickson was the son of Jacob Dickson & Jane Wells of Woodside, Mouswald.  He was an uncle to my grandfather, Thomas Graham Dickson who came to Australia about 1909/1910.  We lost connection with our scottish Dickson family when he died in 1935.  Any information on this line would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Michael Dickson

Dumfriesshire / Dicksons - Mouswald / Torthorwald/ Dalton and Caerlaverock
« on: Sunday 15 May 05 02:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi all  I've been attempting to doing the Tree thing and have found we come from the Mouswald / Torthorwald area of Dumfriesshire in the main on my grandfathers side.

We are desperately looking for someone with similar origins.

We have traced the line we believe to Richard Dickson of Mousewald & Elspeth Dickson of Byers married in Caerlaverock in 1768, we believe they had 7 children. Elspeth's father was a John Dickson of Byers which we believe is Byers Farm near the Caerlaverock church north of Bankend.

Their children were:
Margaret 1773-?
John 1776-1856, m. Isabella Gibson c1777-?
Charlote 1779-1861, m. William Brown 1777-?
Jean 1781-1870, m. John Fell c1795-1874
Christian 1784-1855, m. Robert Leivers c1779-?
Robert 1787-?
Thomas 1790-1869

Their youngest son Thomas was a farmer and blacksmith in Woodside, married Mary Glendinning b. 1790-1876 from Mouswald around 1809 in Mouswald.  They had 11 children, 4 we believe in Dalton and the rest in Mouswald:
Elspeth (Eppie) 1810-1816 Mouswald,
James 1812- ? Mouswald,
Janet 1814-1903 Dalton, m. Richard Grierson 1814-1897
Richard 1816-1819 Dalton,
Robert 1820-1890 Dalton, m. Agnes Dalrymple 1811-?
John 1821-1846 Dalton, m. Elizabeth White 1818 - ?
Jacob 1823-1896, m. Jane Wells/Walls 1832-1911
Thomas 1825-1910, m. Margaret Buckham c1825- 1907
David 1828-1898, m. Jane McKenzie c1828-?
Jane 1832-1899, m. Charles Jardine 1825-1874 died in New York USA
Mary 1833-1907, m. James Jardine 1835-?

Jacob married Jane Wells 1832- 1911 in 1856 and had 10 children,
James Campbell 1853-1927, m. Agnes Fraser c1854-1925
Thomas 1856-1932, m. Mary Brown (Broun) c1855-1913
John 1858-1929, m. Janet Hutchison 1859-1936
Robert 1860-1929, Single
Alexander Grierson 1862-1950, m. Mary Shennan 1862-1942
Margaret 1864-1934,  Single
Mary 1866-1934, Single
Grace 1868-?,
Janet 1870-1938, Single
Jacob 1872-1938, Single

Jacob's son, Thomas married Mary Broun(Brown)c1855-1913 from Urr Kircudbright in Glasgow in 1876 and had 7 children + 1 Stepchild,
Margaret (Maggie) 1871-? b.Urr, (step daughter)
Agnes 1877-1903 b.Torthorwald,
Jacob 1880-1883 b.Rutherglen,
Mary c1883-? Glasgow,
Thomas 1885-1935 b.Mouswald,
Robert 1887-? b. Mouswald,
James 1891-1891 Torthorwald,
Janet 1893-? Torthorwald.

The family seemed to run the Woodside Smithy for many years.

My grandfather Thomas b.1885 came to Australia abt 1909, married Agnes Thomson Neilson, b.1889 Glasgow d. 1941 Mt. Isa Queensland, in 1912.  Thomas died in Brisbane Queensland in 1935.

If anyone has vague connections to this line or knows someone who knows someone, it would be great to fill in the blanks. We are currently trying to get information on the siblings and their families up and down the line. We have been using the LDS IGI site, GROS etc but can only go so far without more clues like which sibling married who.   We are having more success on our grandmothers side.   All connections with Scotland died with my grandmother in 1941 (24 years before I born) and my father is 83 and has dementia and all his siblings are dead.

Thanks in advance,

Michael Dickson :)
