South Africa / Hester Catharina Nell
« on: Monday 01 July 19 12:09 BST (UK)  »

Was my grandmother's birth name and worked as a nursing sister, but under the name of   Margaret James.  She was always addressed as "Sister James".  Her uniform had a mauve epaulette and badge as well as two bars, one I know was green and the other I think may have been blue.  She also had the "Sister's" veil worn at the time.

Question, was she or wasn't she a bona fide nurse?  Or did she just "assume" the name of a registered nurse?

I found an aunt's nursing registration in the UK & Ireland Nursing Register on Ancestry(during a free weekend) and they worked at about the same time period in the profession any time from 1947 until 1962.

Because South Africa was not a Republic yet but a Union, I am assuming that is why my Aunt appeared in the UK & Ireland Registers.

Would love to be able to solve this mystery.

The Common Room / Family Tree Problem
« on: Sunday 30 April 17 14:05 BST (UK)  »
Not sure where to post this, I have a large family tree on Ancestry and have discovered a problem.  I have:

Thomas Templer b 1821 m Leah Beecham b 1823

BUT

Thomas is the son of Jesse Templer 1791-1853 and Mary Beecham 1793-1847

AND

Leah is daughter of Joseph Beecham 1799-1839 and Sarah Hunt 1801-1997

BUT

Joseph and Mary are siblings Parents James Beecham and Charlotte Lowry

Question:

How do I show them on my tree not as separate branches, on paper it would have been easy to show the two sides merging, but cannot for the life of me do it on the online tree.

Any suggestions appreciated

The Common Room / Sir Geoffrey???
« on: Sunday 19 March 17 07:34 GMT (UK)  »

My great uncle has the letters CMG after his name and I have found reference to him in Google books and on Wikipedia, which don't call him a Sir,  but am no closer to confirming his title than I was when I saw it on his grave.

He served in Colonial Administrative Services in Nigeria and I think he was given the CMG for that, but does it make him a Sir??  (this former colonial has no idea how it all works ;D ;D)

South Africa / Looking for Georgina's parents
« on: Monday 13 February 17 06:31 GMT (UK)  »
Here's hoping someone can help solve this mystery

Georgina Mabel Claire Church - b. 7 Oct 1903 South Africa not sure where
                                             d.30 Aug 1982 Pietermarizburg

married  15 Apr 1926 Pietermaritzburg (have a copy of the cert) by special license to

Frederik Maher b 3 Dec 1895 London England
                      d 23 Oct 1953 South Africa

Marrige cert gives her occupation as "Domestic" Newmarket farm East Griqualand where Frederik's occupation is given as being a farmer of the same farm.  No clues as to parents on marriage cert.

We think she may have had a War pension and she may have remarried  a Sturn, not certain of the spelling. Have tried various options of "Church" in case the name was Anglicized, so far a brick wall...

No Estate File appears for her on Naairs (of course it wouldn't be that easy!!!)

Any help greatly appreciated....

The Common Room / Are We Related???
« on: Thursday 17 November 16 10:58 GMT (UK)  »
An Ancestral DNA connection has been shown to a Henry William Rumsey who married an Elizabeth Bell.  The link is a 4th cousin....so possibly in the ggg grandparent line somewhere.....

Here is what I know:

James Arthur Rumsey born 1883 Macclesfield died  South Africa c 1980, my great grandfather,

Parents Henry William Rumsey (1841-1908) and Ellen Stokes (1845-1911).  This is supported by his Attestation papers giving them as his parents and naming his brother Edward.  I have the family on the 1891 census.

I have Henry William's parents as William Henry Rumsey (c1820) and  Elizabeth Hillery.

I have been trying to sort it out, but there seem to be William Henry's and Henry William Rumsey's everywhere and I have gotten myself now so confused that I am not sure who is who.  ::)

(Also not helped by the fact that all the census' I downloaded and attached to my tree I can't look at without a subscription..... >:()

Any help greatly appreciated.  Thank you

Sue

I also cannot find them on the FreeCen site.....

Armed Forces / Military Records Free
« on: Friday 11 November 16 06:31 GMT (UK)  »
On Find my Past.  Received email this morning.

Remembrance Day is a time for us to reflect on the sacrifices made by ancestors who served in the military. To mark the occasion, we’ve made our entire military collection free until 13 November so can you can trace, and learn about, the members of your family tree that fought for their country.

Apologies if this is a duplication.

South Africa / van der MERWE is frying my brain
« on: Tuesday 13 September 16 11:24 BST (UK)  »
My cousin in the UK had a DNA test done (we're trying to prove a family connection) and links to two surnames in SA appeared.  I have managed to find the one connection through ggrandma (which now gives OH and I a common ancestor ;D) and it has sort of confirmed our suspicions.

The other one is the one giving me fried brain. Apparently we are looking for a 4th cousin via 4xgrandparents (gggggrandparents in other words this always confuses me)

The only van der Merwe in our tree is:

Cornelia Johanna Landman nee van der Merwe 1848-1936 married Carel Frederick Coenraad Landman 1846-?

Parents:

Gerrit Jacobus Hendrik Johannes van der Merwe 1811-? and Rachel Wilhelmina Petronella Meyer

Parents and husband confirmed by Death Notice

Now I am looking for the connection to:

Susanna Johanna Susara Jacoba van der Merwe 1880-1947 m Roelof Petrus Gerhardus Jansen van Rensburg 1876-1956

I have been at this for days and my brain is now fried and I am confusing myself. Hoping there is someone out there who can put me out of my misery!!!

ADDED

Just to make matters worse I now find that 2xgrandfather (gggrandfather) married a second time and she was also a van der Merwe, Johanna Wilhelmina. m Johan Karel Pieter Landman 1870-1926

Do they do this deliberately just to make my life a confusing mess!!!
