Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / A pocket watch
« on: Saturday 12 February 22 15:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all! Was just wondering if anyone knows what these specific parts of a pocket watch are called and if anyone by pure luck recognises this design from a blurry photo. Its dated around 1910 and worn by a miner.

Thanks all!

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / A father and son? Scott Thompson
« on: Monday 07 February 22 22:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all. I am hoping someone may be able to help me.

I have attached/linked below a photo of two miners. I have looked closely at this photo and analysed fashion as best I can as a total novice, but I was hoping to get the combined expertise of the good people of roots chat to assist with a few questions I have.

1 - https://i.imgur.com/oh0q8Gn.jpg
2 - https://i.imgur.com/pJ4Clc2.jpg

Specifically:

1)  Do these two men look different enough in age to be father and son?

2) Was this photo taken on or around 1910?

3) Is this a typical posed photo for a Wedding?

4) could male 1 (Left) be 45 years old? Could male 2 (right) be 21 years old?

5) could make 1 (left) be the same male as in the second attached/linked photo?

Many thanks!!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Military Conduct
« on: Tuesday 16 November 21 00:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm assisting a friend with their family tree and have found a discharge paper for one of their ancestors who served in the 71st (Highland) Regiment of Foot in the 1830s.

My friend is a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan themselves, and their Great Grandfathers both died in the First World War. It seems their family service stretches back into the Merchant Navy and further back into the 71st Highland Regiment. I know they would be very grateful in any assistance in deciphering the below (for better or worse as to the chaps conduct!)

Many thanks in advance.

Northumberland / Ashington Holy Sepulchre
« on: Saturday 27 June 20 18:49 BST (UK)  »
Apologies if this has already been discussed, I'm not the best at navigating this forum.

I was wondering if anyone knows where I can access the Ashington Holy Sepulchre burial indexes? I'm looking for a specific plot and after a few visits and several hours of wandering I've had no success.

I'm not 100% the person is buried there, only that it's highly likely.

Cheers,
Keiren

World War Two / REME - Service in North Africa
« on: Sunday 14 June 20 00:28 BST (UK)  »
Good evening,

Over the next few weeks I will be getting my Great Grandfather William Ernest Sanderson's Second World War Medals framed. I am told by his daughter, my grandmother, that he spent 7 years in the Armed Forces and signed up right at the start of the war, (Although I cannot know for sure, this was after all before she was born), and that he was in the REME from it's inception; a fact my Grandmother is quite proud of.

He was awarded the North Africa Star for his operational service on that front, and I know from a letter he wrote at the end of the war that he served in the Persia and Iraq Forces and was attached in an L.A.D to 4 GHQ Liaison Regiment (Phantom). He spoke to my grandmother of his time in Egypt, and he was in possession and we still are of a pamphlet titled "Beirut to Baghdad" which was to inform the troops of what they were likely to come across when traversing through this land.

Unfortunately on his North Africa star there is no specific bar or clasp. I was wondering if people would be aware if he was entitled to a North Africa clasp, a 1st Army Clasp, or an 8th Army Clasp, or how I might be best going about finding out this information?   The medals aren't in A1 condition so I'm not sure if there is a clasp missing or not.

Any REME Experts can assist in telling me what clasps he may have been entitled to based on the fact he spent his entire war in North Africa and was in the REME and later moved up into PAI Forces. Apologies I have no further information.

Many thanks,
Keiren

(I have pictures of him over in North Africa during the war, just for your interest.)

Good evening,

The attached/linked picture is of my Great Grandfather Joseph Jackson Jester. A World War One Veteran who was medically discharged after receiving a gunshot wound injury in 1915 whilst serving with the 4 YORKS.

I was wondering if someone would be able to help me restore this image and help me reduce it's graininess before I frame it alongside his medals? Something I'm hoping to do over the next few weeks. I would prefer if it is kept black and white as opposed to colourised.

This is the highest resolution version of the image I have, and do not possess the original. Also if anyone has any ideas around dating the photograph I would be most grateful. Perhaps the spectacles will give a clue??

Many thanks in advance,
all the best,
Keiren

World War Two / 4 GHQ Signals
« on: Sunday 24 May 20 17:42 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon,

I was recently looking through some old photographs with my grandmother and she showed me a letter her father wrote to her mother towards the end of the war. On the front if the letter it has written in the from section:

Cpl Sanderson
REME LAD
4 GHQ Sigs
PA1 Forces

Now I'm familiar with the REME and with the purpose of LADs but I know little about the war time efforts of 4 GHQ Signals. I know my Great Grandfather was in North Africa and I can tell from his military issue "From Baghdad to Beirut" that he likely also ventured with the military to the Middle East. But I was wondering if anyone here knew what 4 GHQ got up to in approx 1944/1945 as this is likely where my Great Grandfather would have been serving.

Much obliged for any assistance.
Keiren

Hi all,

I'm putting together an album for my Dad with some of our old photos in. I was wondering if anyone would be able to assist me in the restoration of this particularly old photograph and maybe if possible comment upon the style of dress and suggest when it may have been taken?

Unfortunately I do not have this photograph in my possession and haven't seen the original myself for years however I'm half certain it was postcarded on the back.

(if the general brown/sepia colour could be retained, that would be fantastic.)

Thanks a lot,
Cheers,
Keiren

Northumberland / Missing on the 1871 Census
« on: Wednesday 07 November 18 23:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone could possibly assist? I am struggling to find my 4x Great Grandfather, James Scougall, on the 1871 census. The following people should appear on the census;

James Scougall b. ~1818 Borthwick, Scotland
Mary A. Scougall b. ~1823 Borthwick, Scotland

He appears in 18 61:

He appears in the 1861 Scotland Census:
At Brewery (likely Stobs Brewery from other research), Borthwick, Midlothian
James Sccugell   46
Mary Ann Sccugell   38
Alexr Sccugell   21
Elizabeth Sccugell   19
James Sccugell   15
Agnes Sccugell   12
Mary Ann Sccugell   7
Andrew Sccugell   5
John Sccugell   2

He appears in 1881 :

6 Wood Row, Cowpen Northumberland
James Scougall   63
Mary A. Scougall   55
Andrew Scougall   25
John H. Scougall   22
Margaret Scougall   17

But in 1871 he's a no show. He "should" be in England and in Northumberland by this point.

Any help is appreciated,

Cheers,
Keiren
