The Common Room / Family Bible - James Harrison marr. Kate Higginbotham 1862
« on: Wednesday 16 October 19 22:38 BST (UK)  »
Family Bible as above - James Harrison born 1835 Wakefield and Kate (I'm pretty sure Higginbotham) born 1843 Sheffield.  There are dates for their births and for the two children, and for James' parents and his siblings, if anyone is interested.  Interestingly, the Bible was taken to the USA and Kate brought it back again.

The Common Room / Stationers' Hall
« on: Wednesday 04 October 17 19:22 BST (UK)  »
Dear All
Some time ago, on WDYTYA, someone was helped by a visit to Stationers' Hall to find out about his relative, a law stationer.  Typically, the programme didn't explain how ordinary mortals such as I can access such info.  Several generations of my Lewins (William Lewin, born about 1805 and his son, also William, born 1827 for instance) were law stationers, and the info that was obtained on the programme would be wonderful.  Any help would be very gratefully received.

Canada / William C Baston in Dafoe, Saskachewan
« on: Wednesday 05 April 17 21:37 BST (UK)  »
Last time the family heard from William was in 1937 when Saskachewan was having a really bad drought - he was born in Cheshire in 1892 and emigrated to Canada just before WW1 - in the 30s he was farming with his wife Jess and son (I think) Jack.  I always wonder if things got better for him.  Anyone have any idea please?

US Lookup Requests / Great great uncle Edwin Lewin
« on: Wednesday 05 April 17 20:55 BST (UK)  »
Edwin Lewin, born 1837 emigrated to the USA in 1883 and founded Lewin's Bank in a town called Miles, in Runnels County, Texas, according to family tradition.  His children do seem to be involved in some kind of bank in one or two censuses I have found.  Does anyone have any info about it, please?
Many thanks

A bit worrying - though McAfee can be a bit over the top - it objected to me using my email account recently.  Are there problems or is it McAfee, please?

Merionethshire / Richard and Anne Lloyd
« on: Friday 04 December 15 19:45 GMT (UK)  »
Dear Rootschatters
Can anyone help please?  I'm trying to find the marriage of Richard Lloyd and Anne Jones - their first child (that I know of) was born about 1836, so it should be in the early 1830s.  There is a possible baptism for Anne in Llanfrothen in 1817 - her parents were Robert and Elinor Jones.  I have also possibly found them in the 1841 Census in Ffestiniog.  They are apparently buried in Capel Ramoth, Llanfrothen (information from a distant cousin of my husband's, who is long gone).

The Common Room / Property owned by the Crown
« on: Sunday 06 September 15 14:00 BST (UK)  »
Dear All
My Gt Gt Grandfather was a gardener at Kingstanding Hall, near Burton on Trent (not Birmingham) - which was owned by the Crown and leased to a Burton solicitor and his family. The thing is Kingstanding Hall is not on any census - could this be because it was owned by the Crown - or simply it got missed, which seems difficult to believe.  I have a photograph from, I think the 1880s, showing the staff employed by the hall and it would be lovely to work out who was who.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Black & White Studios
« on: Saturday 30 May 15 12:34 BST (UK)  »
Dear All
Does anyone know, please, of Black & White Studios.  I have a photo of children by them - it seems to be dated 6th November 1916, which from the looks of the children and their clothes would seem ok.
Many thanks.

Bedfordshire / WW1 letters
« on: Sunday 02 November 14 21:46 GMT (UK)  »
Dear All
In, I think about 1915, the Bedfordshire papers asked people to lend them their soldier relatives' and friends' letters for publication (with the personal bits taken out).  I have managed to find an amazing number of these letters, and some articles as well, from my Grandad - W Franklin and his brother Herbert, known as Bert.  However, in one of the articles in the Biggleswade paper later in the War, it's mentioned that they had published extracts from Bert's War Diaries some time ago.  Has anyone come across them please?  I'm not having much luck.

And if you haven't tried the papers for soldiers' letters, please do - they're a revelation.
