Buckinghamshire / Rose Hannah Dudley and William Gillett
« on: Friday 20 November 20 12:12 GMT (UK)  »
I am doing some research for a chum and this is what I have so far.
Basically, I am looking for Rose Hannah GILLETT (nee Dudley) in 1911?

Rose Hannah DUDLEY.
Born 1859  Ampthill, Beds. Parents were James DUDLEY and Elizabeth BAVINGTON.
Rose married William Gillett – 11 Oct 1880 at Marston Moretaine, Beds.
William’s father – Mark GILLETT

Rose and William had six children:
William George 1880
Emily 1883
Gertrude Ellen 1884
Violet Rose 1890. Died Nuneaton 1919.
Edith Beatrice Kate 1894. Died Nuneaton 21991
Sarah May 1900 – 1983.

Rose Hannah and William were living with her parents in 1881 in Marston.
In 1891, she was still with her family and four of her children.
She may have gone there to look after her own mother who died in 1892.
Husband William (on the same page) is living with his father, Mark.

In 1901, William and Rose are together at Wavendon with children Violet, Edith and Sarah.

In 1911, William, noted as married, is head of house in Haversham, Wolverton. His father Mark is also there. But no sign of Rose, his wife.

In the Lunacy Patient Registers for Buckinghamshire, there is an entry for Roseanna GILLET, marked as a female pauper, admitted 15 Dec 1911 and discharged 30 Jul 1912.

So the question is....where was she on 1911 census night?? We know she was alive; she died in 1937, death registered Aylesbury.

Hoping someone can help.
Stay safe everyone.

Lancashire / Litherland and Menzies - a suffragette puzzle
« on: Wednesday 24 October 18 10:01 BST (UK)  »
I am doing some family history research for a friend; I have almost completed the project but for one outstanding query concerning a possible suffragette.

Adelaide Harriet LITHERLAND.  Born 4 Apr 1866 in Hulme, Manchester.
Married David MENZIES in 1910 in Chorlton. Their address then was 15 Fenwick Street, Hulme.
In 1911 they were living at 29 Caythorpe Street, Moss Side, Manchester and David Menzies was an engineer’s pattern maker. Two sons, Harold and Athol, were born 1911 and 1913 in Chorlton, and Allan was born 1925 in Edinburgh.

Family gossip had it that Adelaide was a suffragette. I have trawled various websites but her name never appears – either as LITHERLAND or MENZIES.

The only other fact which lends some credibility to the story is that when husband David died in 1948 in Edinburgh, his occupation was noted on his death certificate as retired political organiser! (Adelaide also died in Edinburgh in 1959.)

Adelaide and her husband were definitely in the right place at the right time for her to have been involved in the movement as the Pankhurst family were in that area too.  I did contact The Pankhurst Museum in Nelson Street, but they were unable to help me and just referred me to their Facebook and Twitter pages.

Can anyone advise on where any other helpful records may be?  Is there anywhere else in Manchester where there might be relevant documents on Adelaide, or her husband?

Living in Orkney, my only real resources are online. I would love to be able to prove – or disprove – this family story for the 80-year-old lady for whom I am doing this research.

Dumfriesshire / Marriage of George MENZIES and Margaret THOMSON
« on: Friday 28 September 18 10:55 BST (UK)  »
Try as I might, I cannot find this marriage!  It was probably between 1817 and 1820. I've searched SP using single surnames, both surnames, one surname and one first name of the other and vice versa, I've tried different variants and spelling. I searched Dumfriesshire alone, Kirkcudbrightshire alone and all counties. I've even looked in England, just across the border.
Why is he not there??? Am hoping someone might have some ideas.

George Menzies was born about 1791. I did find a possible baptism of 1787 at Durrisdeer on 24 Aug 1787 but am unsure of that at the moment.

Margaret Thomson was born 1799 in Glencairn, daughter of William Thomson and Jane Patterson who were named as her parents on her death certificate in 1878.
She died at 67 Glasgow Street, Maxwelltown, death registered in Troqueer.

The death certificate says...Margaret Menzies, widow of George Menzies, foreman iron founder...which was his occupation.

They had 10 children staring with David b 24 Aug 1819 up to Elizabeth born 16 Sep 1841.  Their birth and baptism dates were found on SP and both parents were named. Two of the sons who married named their parents as George Menzies, iron moulder and Margaret Menzies MS Thomson on their marriage certificates..

George and Margaret are at Glasgow West Street, Troqueer in 1841 with 7 children; thereafter, George did not appear with Margaret on any subsequent censuses so must have died between 1841 and 1851. Can't find his death either...which might have helped! The only one vague one was a George Menzies who died in Glasgow aged 57, a joiner. That's all it said on the OPR so not much to go on.

If anyone has any ideas...I'd love to hear them.
I did wonder if the Troqueer PRs were still available or whether they have been lost or something. These things did happen.

Ross & Cromarty / Murdoch (Murdo) Macleod and Christina (Christy) Campbell
« on: Tuesday 19 June 18 16:48 BST (UK)  »
Looking for children of Murdo Macleod and Christina Campbell, and their parents.
They married 9 Jun 1840. Murdoch was from Pabbay and Christina was from Carinish.

A son, Donald, b abt 1838, married Margaret NICOL 26 Sep 1867 in Gamrie, Banffshire. He named his parents as Murdoch McLeod, fisherman and Marshallima Mcleod MS Campbell. (I have all his census details post-marriage.)

A daughter, Isabella born 27 Feb 1857 Scalpa [sic] named her parents as Murdoch Macleod, cottar and Christina Macleod, MS Campbell. Informant was Catherine Macleod, aunt, present at birth and who made her mark with a cross X.
(Who was Catherine Macleod, the aunt, and where does she fit in?)

Daughter Isabella was the second wife of Neil Macaskill, married 15 Jan 1891 Stornoway.
Parents named as Murdo Macleod, blacksmith and Christina Macleod MS Campbell, both deceased.

Isabella died 18 Aug 1939 in Stornoway and named her parents as she did on marriage.

I found a possibility for Murdo and Christina in Scalpay in 1851. Murdo was a farmer.
Murdo McLeod 43, Christina 37, Dond[sic] Donald 10, William 8, John 5 plus John McLeod 21, also marked as son b 1830 Harris. ED14/2/5

My problem is that I cannot pin down these other children.
And how can the John age 21, b 1830, be a son??

I have trawled various Hebridean websites, some of which are very useful - but more for eliminating various possibilities - and now I'm a bit stuck.

I think searching for Macleods in Harris and Lewis is a bit like looking for a Davy Jones in Wales! The words...wading and...treacle come to mind!!

Has anyone any thoughts?

Aberdeenshire / Elspet Jane PIRIE
« on: Thursday 22 March 18 11:31 GMT (UK)  »
I have a problem with a PIRIE.  Doing research for a friend and this is one big stumbling block.

Elspet Jane PIRIE b 1863 Old Machar, dau of William PIRIE and Jane Dunn.
She appears in the 1871 census with her family.

Next appearance is as the named mother on the marriage certificate of her daughter, Elspet (Elsie) Jane FINDLAY  marriage certificate when she married David Wilson NICOL.
Marriage: 27 Feb 1900.  David Wilson Nicol, bachelor and labourer aged 22, married Elspet Jane Findlay, spinster and provision worker aged 21, married after publication according to the forms of the established Church of Scotland on 27 Feb 1900 at 57 Queen Street, Aberdeen. David's accommodation noted as 3 Farrier Lane, Aberdeen and Elspet's accommodation noted as 57 Queen Street, Aberdeen. David's parents named as George Nicol, trawler engine fitter, deceased and Elizabeth Nicol MS McAllister. Elspet's parents named as John Findlay, labourer at gas works and Elspet Jane Findlay MS Pirie. Witnesses were James Jamieson and James Williamson.

David and Elspet had a daughter, Maggie Bell NICOL b 1898, 2 years before they were married and Maggie is marked as illegitimate on her birth certificate; mother signed as Elsie Findlay. Father also signed the birth certificate. Where does the name BELL come from?  But that’s another problem!

I tried to find a birth of Elspet Jane FINDLAY and found a possibility dated Dec 1879. Father John Findlay; mother Jane Pirie; married 1872 Portsoy. Downloaded that marriage only to find that the mother named her parents as Alexander PIRIE and Ann, so back to square one.

There is a possible marriage at Peterhead in 1900 but that can’t be right! They are on the 1901 census with a young son James.

I am beginning to wonder if Elsie’s mother, Elspet b 1863 gave birth to Elsie as an illegitimate child. The mother would only have been 16 years old at the time! Sounds fishy to me.  But where did Elsie get her father’s name of John FINDLAY from???

If anyone can help out here, I’d be enormously grateful. There are so many PIRIE and FINDLAY in Aberdeenshire the words haystack and pin often come to mind!!  Thank you for reading all this so far!

Essex / Gane and Knight in Harwich
« on: Tuesday 03 October 17 17:18 BST (UK)  »
Doing research for a friend and have a problem and am hoping someone here might be able to help. I've hit a large rock!

Thomas GANE married Ann KNIGHT 12 May 1806.
Thomas was a mariner, poss born in Dedham, Essex, son of Thomas & Mary.

Thomas and Ann had 7 children. I have no problem with them.
Their second son was Thomas Poole Gane, b 7 Aug 1811 and poss died 1840?

Thomas' wife, Ann, died abt 1826 in Harwich.

I then found 2 more children....both born and bap in Harwich
Catherine b 15 Apr 1830
Isabella b 29 Aug 1835
Children of Thomas & Catherine KNIGHT.

My question is this:
Is the Thomas who married Catherine KNIGHT the same one as married Ann KNIGHT?
OR
Is the Thomas who married Catherine KNIGHT Thomas senior's son, Thomas Poole Gane?

Someone sent me the Suffolk Marriage Index for a marriage of Thomas Gane, widower, to Catherine Knight on 28 Aug 1830 in Ipswich

I have found Catherine Gane on the censuses as shown below:

Possibility. 1841 Census. Kingshead Street, Harwich. Catherine Gane 32, Catherine 8, Arabella [Isabella] 6, Edward 3 and Philip 1. HO107/344/4/1

Possibility. 1851 Census, Dovercourt, Harwich. Catherine Gane, widow and pauper 45, Edward Thomas, son 13, Philip son 11 and Robert Knight, visitor and carpenter 81. HO107/1780/136/20

I think Ann Knight was b abt 1787
And acc to the censuses, Catherine KNIGHT would have been b abt 1806.

It doesn't help that I can't find a death for either Thomas Senior or Thomas Junior.

Can anyone help me out here please.

Leicestershire / Joseph Edley from Worthington
« on: Wednesday 20 September 17 16:23 BST (UK)  »
I am researching EDLEYs for a friend and I'm a bit stuck. I fear much of this will be overseas.

I do have Joseph Edley, bap 21 Dec 1800 Worthington. He had a brother, Hosea, bap 25 May 1804 in Worthington and a sister Mary, bap same day. Their parents were Robert Edley and Ann.

I can't find Ann's surname.

Back to Joseph, he married a Mary (possibly HEWITT) but can't find that either.

They had several children including one son, Robert, bap 31 Jul 1836 in Colombo, Ceylon. His birth date was mentioned as 22 Jul 1836 but no place given. I have found a great website www.kabristan.org which has lots of details re Ceylon, but it's surnames of Joseph's wife, Mary, and Robert senior's wife, Ann, that I would like to find.

Can anyone help here?

PS: There are lots of public member trees on this lot, but little sign of sources or proof!

Joseph joined the Army aged 23 on 8 Apr 1825 where he states his previous occupation was a miller.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Latin in old PRs
« on: Thursday 13 April 17 09:20 BST (UK)  »
I hope I am on the right forum for my query. If not, can someone please re-direct me.

I am helping to check and proofread transcriptions of old PRs.

Can anyone tell me what "hict exhib" means?

Someone suggested it means that the register was checked and shown to higher authority at that time.

I wonder if it was something to with the date a child was received ito the church after baptism.

Does anyone have any ideas? I trawled various Latin to English sites yesterday to no avail.
Thank you.

Angus (Forfarshire) / Death of Charles Dobson, spouse of Margaret Ireland
« on: Friday 20 January 17 17:33 GMT (UK)  »
According to the 1851 census, Charles Dobson was born in England about 1822.
1851 Census. Murraygate, Dundee. Charles Dobson 29, Margaret 27, Mary 2, Margaret 1 and Ellen Boddy 18 servant. ED15/30

Charles Dobson married Margaret Ireland on 24 Nov 1847 in Dundee.

I cannot find Charles on any further censuses.
I have found Margaret and the children in 1851, 1861, and 1871.
Their last child I believe was Henry Murdoch Dobson 14 Oct 1862; but funnily enough there was a big gap between him and the earlier children who were born 1847, 1850 and twins in 1851.

I am really looking for a death for Charles just to tidy things up!!
Can anyone help?

I've searched on Scotland'sPeople (1851-1871) but there seems to be only three, all of whom died when they were under the age of 5 years old.  Not knowing where he was born makes it difficult to find his parents and possible pace of death. For example, did he go south to visit his parents and died while there?

Can anyone help out here please.
