Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Sarah Littlejohns born c1822 Plymouth
« on: Monday 12 July 21 00:03 BST (UK)  »
In 1857 in St Helier. I have found a Sarah Littlejohns marrying Moses Hayball

According  to the marriage she was born around 1822 in Plymouth and father is Edward Littlejohns supposedly a confectioner.

I can’t find a baptism for Sarah or find her father in any records.

However there is my ancestors Edward Littlejohns who married Sarah Eddy in 1817 in stoke dameral. He appears to be the only Edward of right age to father Sarah in 1822 in Plymouth. However his occupation is a carpenter/builder. This Edward died in 1828 in Plymouth.

To confuse things however. Edward was previously married to a Temperance Dodge. Their daughter Sarah Temperance Littlejohns born 1805 also ends up in St Helier with husband Robert Quarm. Her occupation was a confectioner.

Another child Edwin Littlejohns born 1828 (my 3x great grandfather) also ends up in St Helier where he marries my 3x great grandmother Jane Bennett. They then end up in London in 1851.

I am wondering if this Sarah Littlejohns born 1822 may actually be a child of Edward Littlejohns and Sarah Eddy, maybe she just gave the occupation of her half sister for the  marriage when asked what occupation her father had?

I just can’t find any baptism of this Sarah to confirm my theory. What do you think?

can anyone help me find out what happened to her? I can’t locate her on any census records and I also can’t find any death record.

Devon / Bennett Family
« on: Saturday 10 July 21 16:25 BST (UK)  »
I am struggling to find these two people from my tree after the 1851 census. So wondering if some fresh eyes might be able to advise or help.

Both are daughters of Samuel Bennett and Charity Johns.

Firstly is:

Mary Ann Bennett born 1823 in Stoke Damerel (say Devonport on the census)

In 1841 she is with widowed mother Charity. In 1850 I believe she marries William Goddard. Then in 1851 she is in Plymouth with William and daughter Ruth Jane Goddard. After this I can’t find trace of any of them at all.

Secondly is her sister

Elizabeth Bennett born 1828 in Devonport

In 1841 she is at Cumberland Street in Stoke Damerel (a servant)

In 1851 I believe I have found her in Tamerton Foliott as a servant.

Then after this I can’t find trace of her anywhere. She could have married or died, but nothing obvious I can tie her into.

Thank you in advance.

Renfrewshire / Peter McCallum - Merchant in Greenock
« on: Monday 17 August 20 00:50 BST (UK)  »
My 4xGreat Grandfather Peter McCallum was born around 1817.

From his brother Robert's marriage cert I know he was likely born in Tradeston, Lanarkshire and parents are Peter McCallum (an Auctioneer) and Elizabeth McFadyen.

Elizabeth McFadyen was born in Paisley in 1792.

The difficult part I have had is there is no marriage between Elizabeth and Peter and I can't find the baptisms of Peter or Robert.

I have managed to trace Elizabeth line and have confirmed her with DNA matches. I can see where the Mccallum line branches to, it's just filling in my possible Peter McCallum.

One candidate stands out Peter McCallum born 1781 to James McCallum and Janet Tosh in Greenock. The issue is however this Peter marries Margaret Park and is having children with her.

But I keep getting drawn back to him as with an occupation of Merchant and being in the right area he is the one that stands out.

Which would mean my 4xGreat Grandfather and his brother Robert (could even be more Children) are the result of an affair that Elizabeth had with Peter. It would explain the no marriage and no baptisms.

So with James McCallums wife being quite an unusual name - Tosh. I decided to check my dna matches and viola I have a couple of different matches that connect to her grandparents. This can't be a coincidence?

But is there any records that might exist to confirm any of this, did the Parish find out would there be a record there? The fact Elizabeth gave them their fathers surname would tell me he acknowledged them. I have found Peter Mccallum (Merchants) will, but he doesn't name Robert or Peter in there from what I can see, it's hard to read and is many pages. My 4xgreat grandfather was deceased at the time, but Robert was still alive. Maybe his wife and other kids didn't know?

Any advice would be appreciated. I've been stuck on this for years and finally get a bit of a breakthrough to then get stuck again.

Lanarkshire / Robert McCallum
« on: Thursday 13 August 20 15:57 BST (UK)  »
I have a Robert McCallum marrying in 1855 in Glasgow to a Jane Aitkin parents are given as Peter McCallum and Elizabeth Fadyen it states on the marriage certificate that he was born in Tradeston, Glasgow.

He was previously married to Jane McMillan (can’t find this marriage) she died in 1854. I can’t locate Robert in any census before 1861.

The only possible birth I can find is Robert McHolland to Peter and Elizabeth Collins in 1816 but the census/marriage give varying dob from 1816 in 1861 to 1825 when he married to 1829 in 1871.

There are more births between this Peter and Elizabrth and Peters name does appear to be McCallum but badly transcribed in many forms. But I’m not 100 sure on this. I definitely have dna matches to McFadyen.

I found a proclamation for Peter Mccallum and Elizabeth Collins in 1811 in Renfrewshire, their children are born between Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire.

On Roberts marriage certificate it states Peters occupation is an Auctioneer I think, Robert was a Stevedore/Ship Watchman.

I can’t find a death for robert For more clues. He reports his wives death in 1874 and is deceased by 1883, I can’t find him in the 1881 census so it’s likely he died between 1874 and 1881. I’ve looked at so many Robert McCallum deaths in and past these dates with no luck.

Can anyone help/advise?

Devon / Richard Eddy - Royal Artficiers
« on: Wednesday 12 August 20 00:37 BST (UK)  »
I have Richard Eddy born 1773 in Zennor marrying Mary Goanin (Goninan) in 1792 in Stoke Damerel.

I’ve found a baptism of one child Henry in 1801. There is also my 4x Great Grandmother Sarah Eddy 1797 in East Stonehouse (although baptism can’t be found for her)

On Richards marriage entry it says he is Royal Artificier would there be any records?

I can’t locate Richard, Mary or Henry after 1801

Antrim / James McLaren born abt 1808 Belfast
« on: Monday 03 August 20 19:16 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor James McLaren who ends up in Waterford, he was a shoemaker and Protestant. He married a Catholic lady Mary Murray in 1837 in Kilkenny.

I’ve found prison records for him and poor house records. But last trace of him is serving time in 1883 in Waterford. I can’t find his death anywhere.

He is in a Dublin workhouse in 1880 but back in Waterford In 1883, maybe the poorhouse sent him back there.

I also can’t find a birth/baptism, one prison record states he was born Belfast (fanning institute) does anyone know what this is/was.

I don’t need children, prison records etc as I’ve researched those extensively, it is just his birth/death I am struggling with.

McLaren as has many variations. Mclawrence, mclaurence etc

There are quite a few unknown deaths I suppose any of those could be him, no way of knowing really, as most have no ages and are just found in the river suir.

(sorry after posting this I realized I’ve already posted for help with this over year ago now but it is still frustratingly not solved), but it didn’t come up when I searched, just the one I posted in the Waterford group, so if you want to merge this with my old one that’s fine)

Waterford / Ellen Dowling born 1900 Waterford
« on: Sunday 26 July 20 23:56 BST (UK)  »
I've found a prison record for Ellen (Nellie) Dowling who was born 1900 the daughter of Daniel Dowling and Annie Mclaren.

She was working as a servant in 1918 and apparently took a ring and pawned it when her case went t court her father claimed she had a habit of taking things and had sent his wife to the pawnshop to warn them not to purchase items from her (the pawnshop denied this).

The girl was too old for a reformatory so it was decided that the case would be adjourned for 12 months and in the meantime, the girl would be sent to a convent. Does anyone have any idea where she might have been sent? I can't find her after 1918 -  no death or marriage. I am wondering if she did get sent to a convent, did she end up overseas?
