Scotland / Any football historians able to help?
« on: Sunday 10 March 24 20:07 GMT (UK)  »
There is a photo that has just surfaced in our father's papers. I do not know the history behind it or why my father (a mad Celtic fan, who followed them from all round the world wherever his work took him to!) had kept it amongst his papers and documents.

One of the players, could connect to family. This is J P Tulley, bottom right of the photo.

I am trying to figure out which football team this could be. Also, hopefully get an indication of approximate years when this photo could have been taken which may help.

The older gentleman in middle of the top row was an Alexander Veitch Lothian, a Maths and Physic Professor in Glasgow in his later years. He was also a football player in his youth. Mention of him playing for Aberdeen FC in the 1880s https://aberdeen-fc.com/aberdeen-fc-player-profile/alexander-v-lothian.html#gsc.tab=0 He was 74 years old when he died in Glasgow in 1933.

The photography studios were a Wohlgemuth & Co. with studios in Renfield Street, Glasgow until at least early 1930s.

Not a surprise, but football is not my thing ::) Any help and comments would be appreciated.

Scotland / Scotlands People Essential Maintenance on 23 Nov 2022
« on: Thursday 17 November 22 19:27 GMT (UK)  »
Just seen the following on their website:

Upcoming Essential Maintenance - Wednesday 23rd November 2022

ScotlandsPeople will be offline for maintenance on 23 November. The ScotlandsPeople Centre in Edinburgh will be closed and the site will be unavailable in local history centres. We are upgrading our system and migrating storage, and we apologise for the inconvenience this will cause.

If you have a booking in our ScotlandsPeople Search Rooms on 23rd November, we will be in contact with you directly to re-arrange or to provide a refund.

Is there any chance this planned maintenance may include the launch of the 1921 census too...I live in hope  ::)

The Common Room / Family Search - New restrictions on viewing results?
« on: Sunday 23 January 22 22:51 GMT (UK)  »
Have found an entry for an English 1871 census entry that I want to view the full index entry for (not the original which has never been available as we know).

It won't let me move to the extended index with the specific url that I can quote. I am getting this message:

We're unable to show this record to you.

This record can only be displayed on certain accounts. FamilySearch must honor the agreements we have with our partners, record owners, and internal policies.

Anybody else getting this message?

The Common Room / British Army birth in Germany in 1960s
« on: Sunday 03 October 21 19:50 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if someone could give me some advice on how to find and order a birth cert where the birth took place in Germany in the 1960s. Father's unit was based in Germany at that time and family resident at base.

Thanks for any help  :)

I came across this really informative guide from Aberdeen Council Council:

www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/media/16383/accessing-birth-records-in-scotland-march-2016.pdf

Very clearly sets out all the info on records, including how to research, where to look and much more.

Formal adoption in Scotland came into law in 1930 www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/guides/adoption-records

Ireland / Understanding 1851 census extract re Benthorpe family
« on: Sunday 25 August 19 12:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I wonder if we could get some help in understanding this document, an extract from the 1851 census for Londonderry (relating to main thread here www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=817661.0)

As always hopeful but struggling with Irish records, I thought this might connect to Sarah and her family (if confirmed  ::)) http://censussearchforms.nationalarchives.ie/search/cs/details.jsp?id=41178

There is a link to the image at the bottom. I think this shows a note on the left of the children of John Snr and wife Sarah.  Don't undertand the document really nor the reference to Mrs Harron in Glasgow  ???

Clip above starts from pg 6 #53.

The key player is daughter Sarah, who ends up in Glasgow. Some of her siblings have also been found in Scotland in later years.

Many thanks for any help and assistance.

Monica  :)
