Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / BIRKITT - Bridlington Burials
« on: Thursday 04 September 08 08:09 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone able to look up the location of burials for a family named Birkitt (and any variation) in Bridlington?
I suspect that when one is found, the rest will follow!  For this reason, I haven't stated a period of interest because any information will be gratefully received.
I suspect they may be in the Priory Cemetery.
If this is the case, how do I go about finding a particular grave - the cemetery is enormous.  Is there a sexton's record and, if so, is it available for reference?
I am not a member of any genealogical society in East Yorkshire but do have a FHS readers' card.
Kind regards...... ::)

Suffolk / LAPPAGES Of Polstead
« on: Thursday 08 May 08 20:15 BST (UK)  »
I am at present trying to trace the connection between the Suffolk and Essex Lappage families.
I have a John Lappage b. around 1711 in my tree who is described as 'of Stanway' (Essex) in his marriage record.  I have traced this at the Essex Records Office and he definitely has no birth record in the Stanway area at the correct time.  In fact, the very first mention of the Lappage name in the Stanway district appears to occur with this particular marriage record (November 23rd 1736 to Elizabeth Buntin).
I see that someone has posted the baptism of a John Lappage on January 6th 1711 in Polstead on IGI.  Because I recognise that this source is sometime suspect, I wonder if there is anyone who can confirm that the two Johns are, in fact, the same person. The IGI record gives his parents names as John and Ann but there is no further information.
There are only 12 miles between Stanway and Polstead but pinning down the connection between the two families is a nightmare!
Thanks for listening, Hope you can help!

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Family photographs - Lappage/marriage partners
« on: Tuesday 31 January 06 09:02 GMT (UK)  »
I realise I am probably being VERY optimistic but if anyone researching the Lappage family in Essex and Norfolk has any photos hanging about at the back of a drawer somewhere I would be very interested to see them.
I have a few of my granddad, Sam Lappage, born in Heptonstall Yorkshire but whose father was James Lappage b.1866 in Copford which I can let them have in return.
I am also interested in any 19th century pictures of Copford, Birch, Stanway and Easthorpe plus Wymondham and Hethersett in Norfolk.
Thanks a heap - Susie

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / WILLIAM LAPPAGE born Harwich 1810
« on: Tuesday 11 October 05 17:07 BST (UK)  »
If anyone has access to parish records for Harwich would they be so kind as to look up this chap for me?

He has been 'rattling round' in my research for the past year and I have no idea who he belongs to or even why he was born in Harwich.  He is found later in Copford and Birch where the rest of the Lappage clan lived.
I have found two more of the same from Harwich - one called Josiah and the other Lewis but they are a generation on.

I suppose his father might have been a seaman but I don't know.

I have now found one William Lappage (above - b.1810) and lost another William Lappage (b.1857 Copford).  Pity they don't cancel each other out!

Huntingdonshire Lookup Requests / SWEPSON - Offord Cluny
« on: Tuesday 26 July 05 10:18 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone come across a Jane Swepson b. 1820s or possibly early 1830s?  Her father's name was Joseph and he was a carpenter.

She married one of my ancestors, John Lappage, in Copford Essex in 1856 but died in 1859 thus neatly avoiding the 1861 census which is the earliest information I have access to other than IGI which has no reference to her or Joseph (one hell of a sentence, that!).

Although she is down as marrying from Copford, as there are no Swepsons in Essex at any time, I have to conclude she came from elsewhere.  Swepson appears to be a name local to Offord Cluny and Bedford.

Any help would be so much appreciated.

Bedfordshire / SWEPSON - Bedford(shire)
« on: Tuesday 26 July 05 10:11 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone come across a Jane Swepson born in the 1820s or early 1830s whose father was called Joseph and worked as a carpenter?

She may probably have come from Bedford itself.

I would be so pleased to hear anything of her at all.  She married one of my ancestors, John Lappage, in Copford Essex in 1856 but died in 1859, thus neatly avoiding the 1861 census.  I don't have access to anything before that other than IGI which has no reference to her or Joseph.

If anyone has any information I would be so grateful.

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Swepson 1841 and 1851 census
« on: Monday 25 July 05 18:58 BST (UK)  »
Poor old Jane Swepson!  She married John Lappage in Copford in 1856, had a son William in 1857 and died giving birth to a daughter, Jane Frances (who also died), in 1859.

John was born in Easthorpe in 1822 so she may have been a similar age... or not.  She was John's second wife so she may have been quite a bit younger.  His first marriage ended in 1854 with the death of his wife Eliza.  He had three children with Eliza, the eldest being 9 at the time of his mother's death.

But... I only know where Jane went and not where she came from.

Her age is not on her marriage certificate - "of full age" (isn't that an annoying phrase?).  Her father was a joiner by the name of Joseph Swepson.  She was living in Copford at the time of her marriage but that doesn't mean she came from there.  I am just hoping that she and Joseph were resident there during the 1841 or 1851 censuses.....

Or that someone else has heard of them.

I would appreciate any help - the IGI has no information and  the information I need , other than her marriage certificate which I have, is of a date prior to 1837.

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Copford Parish Registers - Lappage
« on: Wednesday 20 July 05 16:23 BST (UK)  »
If anyone is able, can they please look up the death of a John Lappage in the parish registers of St Michael and All Angels at Copford?  I believe he died in the early 1830s and was born in 1796.
He married a Sarah Howard (or Haward) in Birch in 1817 and was the son of Jane Thorington and William Lappage.
You could end a whole line of research for me if you can answer this.

I recently visited the ERO and have the following information from the Parish Registers of St Michael and All Angels at Copford for the Lappage family.

As deaths are sometimes difficult to verify, I thought they might be of use to someone else.

The following are all burials:

13 Jan 1806 - Jane
09 May 1763 - Damon
30 Jan 1767 - Rebekah
23 Oct 1769 - Daniel
14 May 1775 - Sarah
20 Nov 1776 - Daniel
25 Jul 1777 - Joseph
07 Jun 1778 - Thomas
01 Jun 1783 - Judah (I have seen this elsewhere as Judith)
01 Nov 1784 - Rebecca

Also baptisms - at Stanway -  of the children of John Lappage and Mary Springet:

Mary - 18 Jul 1756
John - 31 Mar 1765
William - 04 Mar 1769

This list is not exhaustive, I believe.  There was another William who was older than Mary but who evidently died quite young, for example.

I have further information on the Lappage family should anyone want it.
