Lancashire / Robinsons of Southport, Lancs
« on: Tuesday 03 January 12 15:18 GMT (UK)  »
One of my grandmothers was Ethel Robinson, born at 86 Hall Street, Southport in 1884. Her father William Evans Robinson was a builder there, following on from his father Edward Robinson, who came from Burland, Cheshire. Edward and his wife Ann Evans had seven children: William born 1851, Emma Jane, Agnes 1857, Mary Jane, 1859, James 1861, Laura 1864, Alice 1866. Family lore has it that Edward built a lot of houses in Southport and was a good businessman, but that William was not such a good businessman.

I have the birthday books of grandmother Ethel and also of her half-sister Ida Muriel, daughter of William's second wife. From these books and the attached family photo I guess that Laura married James Atkinson and had a child Violet. I know Violet married a Mr Horsey and they had at least one daughter Rona who became Rona Woodroffe. I have no other details though.

I also guess that that Alice married Mr Slater, who was probably either J. F. or E. and that they had a daughter Eleanor, who appears in both books. They seem to have been resident in Southport.
James does not appear in either book so I guess he died youngish, and there are no obvious candidates for Agnes. Mary Jane may have become Mary Ife,  or more likely M. J. Haygarth. If the latter, other Haygarths in Ethel's book are R. N., and S. or J. (I can't decipher which).

Emma Jane may possibly have married Mr Ingham to become Jane Ingham and after his death married Samson Ware. That parentage may be wrong but Mary Eveline Ware appears in both books and she was the first wife of Walter Robinson, brother of my grandmother Ethel.

I am attaching a family photo of the Edward Robinson family with (presumably) the seven children mentioned above. Below are annotations made by Violet Horsey in a message to Ida Muriel some decades ago. I think she made a mistake with the identities of Agnes and Alice in the photo.

I wonder if anyone has families that intersect with these.
Many thanks,
Des

Australia / ROBINSON of Victoria
« on: Monday 02 January 12 20:57 GMT (UK)  »
Two of my great uncles immigrated to Victoria separately around 100 years ago. I don't know when my great uncle Walter Robinson (born c1881, father William Evans Robinson, mother Annie Jackson) came to Australia nor whom he married but he had at least one child, Edna. I understand she married Jim Keenes and lived in Frankston, but died in 1982.
Walter's half-brother Frank (born 1899) came out with his mother Elizabeth and sister Ida Muriel in about 1910. Muriel married Ted Marsh in Cheltenham but then returned to the UK. Her mother followed later, but Frank stayed and had at least one son, John, who married Helen, and lived in Belinda Avenue, Research.
I haven't been able to find any appropriate entries in the passenger lists either arriving in Victoria or departing the UK for Australia.
Although there are 9 Robinsons in the Melbourne white pages and 66 for the area, unsurprisingly none show an obvious connection to mine. There appear to be no Victorian newspaper obits that match my relatives. I haven't paid for any bdm certificates yet as I'm hoping to find someone who actually knows a relative first.
Any help gratefully received!
