Lancashire / Can't find definitive birth record.
« on: Thursday 09 April 20 13:45 BST (UK)  »

I'm looking for help finding the true birth of John Boyd. On the 1939 Register he gives his date of birth as the 22nd May 1891 however there are no records for a John Boyd born 2nd or 3rd quarter of 1891 in Manchester only one in the 4th quarter.  I then found one page of a record on the Seaman's Register dated 1910 with the same birth date and  place of birth and he's a fruit hawker.

Following the record for the one born in the 4th quarter 1891 I found a baptismal record at St Oswald's Church, Collyhurst on the 8th November 1891 to a John and Sarah Elizabeth Boyd. In 1911 the family are living in Bolton and give his age as 19 which would fit with a birthday after the census.

Is it possible that his parents forgot to register his birth and did so later in the year but told him his true birthday?

Thanks

Margaret

Lancashire / I can't find Kay family on the 1861 census for Manchester
« on: Thursday 25 April 19 14:54 BST (UK)  »
I've been looking for the Kay family living in Manchester circa 1861.

Adam Kay and his wife Margaret are living in Rooden lane, Prestwich on the 1851 census with son George William age 1.
Adam and Margaret had 5 children.
George William born 1849 in Prestwich.
James born 1851 who died age 9 months.
Mary Ellen born 1852.
Twins James and John born 1856.
All the children were baptised at St Mary's Church, Prestwich.

Adam Kay died in Manchester in 1856.

The family don't appear to be on the 1861 census. I'm at a loss as to where to look next. Any suggestions?

The Lighter Side / True or false?

I came across this last night and couldn't stop laughing.

When asked his occupation the guy replied Nail and woolly teeth maker. He was either a very sarcastic man or he had the oddest job going.

That's a first for me.  ???  ???  ???

Lancashire / Can't find the barker family.
« on: Monday 17 September 18 16:25 BST (UK)  »

I'm trying to find any details of the Barker family on the 1871 and 1881 censuses. I've searched for the last ten days and can only find BMD's for the family in the north of England.

Annie born 1882 and Catherine Barker born in 1883 in Manchester first appear on the 1891 census living with their brother Thomas and his family in St Michael's Parish. Thomas says he's 24 and born in Sheffield. I found Catherine on the 1901 census living with her older sister Elizabeth Hawksworth and her family in Ancoats. Elizabeth was born in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1874.

The problem is I can't find Thomas and Elizabeth on earlier censuses. I suspect that their parents were William Barker and Ann Burton. According to the GRO records all the children have the same MMN Burton. I then found a marriage for a William Barker to Ann Burton in the 4th quarter 1868 in Bradford, Yorks almost two years after Thomas was baptised.

Would some kind person please see if they can find them on the censuses for me?

The Lighter Side / I wonder if he knew?

While researching a priest in Manchester on the 1901 census I came across John G Boulaye a priest at St Chad's Church. Under Occupation or Profession it states, " A so called idolatrous Roman Catholic Priest. Workhouse Chaplain".

Obviously the enumerator didn't like him.  ;D

I'm looking for the name of the Roman Catholic Church in or near Coolbawn. There doesn't seem to be any references online to any churches in the area

Thanking you in anticipation.

Lancashire / Help need with name changes.

Can anyone work out for me if these are the same family because I'm confused now. I know the 1911 is correct and all the children were born to Christopher McGrath and Mary Ann nee Deveraux.

On the 1911 census the following family give these details.

Christopher McGrath age 60 Labourer born Tipperary
Mary Ann 49                                          "
Catherine  28  dau Shirt Maker         "
Ellen 23  dau Domestic Servant          "
John 22 son Bricklayer            "
Nora 19  dau Bookbinder            "
Walter  18  son Bricklayer            "
Christopher 16  son Errand boy born Manchester.

Living at 84 Blacklock Street, Bradford, Manchester.

Mary Ann says she's had 9 children and none have died.

I then looked for the family on the 1901 census and couldn't find Christopher or Mary Ann so I looked for their younger children and the only link that I found was-

William McGrath age 48 no occupation  born Tipperary
Mary A 43                  "
Willie  23 son a brickfitter             "
Margaret 18 dau shirt machinist.         "
Ellen 16 dau.                  "
John 14 son labourer.            "
Norah 12 dau.               "
Walter 10 son.               "
Christopher 7 son.          born   Manchester

Living at 110 Westmoreland Street, Harperhey, Manchester.

There is only one Christopher McGrath born circa 1893 in Lancashire.

Lancashire / Family missing on the 1901 census
« on: Friday 11 May 18 19:39 BST (UK)  »

I'm looking at the family of Joseph (sometimes Joseph Patrick) O'Donnell and I've hit a brickwall in 1901.

On the 1911 census they are living at 86 Ravald Street, Manchester. Mary O'Donnell age 48, a widow, and her sons Joseph age 25  (born 1886) and William age 21 (born 1890) Mary says she's had 11 children and 8 have died.

The family are nowhere to be found on the 1901 census. I've tried every trick in the book and none of them appear to be recorded anywhere in the country.

On the 1891 census I suspect the family have changed their name to McDonnell.  RG12 3234. Margaret their daughter is in a Convent Reformatory in Bristol in 1901

Can anyone confirm that the McDonnell's are the O'Donnel's in 1891 or find them in 1901.

Thank you.

England / Missing family data pre-1871
« on: Thursday 10 August 17 13:57 BST (UK)  »

I'm looking for John Charles White a Baker by trade, born in Winchester circa 1830, he's not on the 1841, 51 or 61 censuses and he suddenly turns up in Manchester in 1871 with a family. His wife Mary Ann Aubrey born Banbury, Oxfordshire circa 1835 and children Margaret born in Maidstone Kent circa 1856 and Frederick born in 1859 in Walsall and this is where I hit a brickwall. There are no birth or marriage records for him and Margaret's birth isn't recorded.

I wondered if Mary Ann had been married to someone else when Margaret was born so I cross referenced every Margaret born in Maidstone between 1855-1857 and then looked for a marriage of the surname to a Mary Ann Aubrey and couldn't find one.

The White's are  not on the 1861 census anywhere in the country so it makes searching backwards more difficult.

I've found Mary Ann on the 1841 and 51 censuses and her brother living with them in 1891. It's John White that's causing the problem. I know he was probably a journeyman baker so moved around the country but where was he pre-1871?

I really would appreciate some help on this family it's driving me crazy.

Margaret
