Suffolk Lookup Offers / Richard Cobbold's account of WORTHAM, 1860
« on: Friday 06 September 13 17:35 BST (UK)  »
The Reverend Richard Cobbold lived in Wortham and wrote a detailed account of his life there during 1860. This is an amazing book, he wrote numerous anecdotes about his parishioners, giving details of life and gossip in the village, he even painted portraits of many of them. He vividly brings to life the personalities and character of ordinary people in a way we don't often see.

If you are researching relatives in Wortham there's a reasonable chance that they're in this book somewhere. Let me have their names and I'll look them up.

Cheshire / How to trace property ownership?
« on: Tuesday 27 August 13 08:06 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone advise me on how to trace historic property ownership in Cheshire? I've found lots of my ancestors on the Cheshire Tithe Maps but they obviously cover quite a narrow time period. Is there any way to trace property ownership either earlier or later? I had a quick look at the land registry website but couldn't find anything of use there.

Norfolk / Gibbet Lane - off the A143 nr West Dereham
« on: Friday 09 August 13 19:26 BST (UK)  »
We drove past Gibbet Lane today going down the A143 from Kings Lynn towards Thetford. Being a curious sort I've had a Google but can't find anything about the story of how the gibbet came to be there. I've found it on Faden's 1797 map, it looks like it would have stood on Cavenham common at the junction of the A143 and Gibbet Lane (or whatever it was called at the time)

Can anyone shed any light on whose remains hung there and what crime they'd committed?

Cheshire / Anyone researching Samuel Bazley, Runcorn early 20th C?
« on: Sunday 23 June 13 14:26 BST (UK)  »
I know this is a long shot! I bought a copy of a 1906 magazine in a charity shop, it carries an article about Samuel Bazley, a shoe maker in Runcorn who also trained a choir in a Wesleyan chapel. There's a photo of his too (attached) I had a quick search on the 1901 Census and found he was born in 1846 in Frodsham, his wife was Mary and they had 5 children.

I just wondered if there's anyone out there who's researching Samuel and would appreciate a copy of the article.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Has anyone used a transcription service?
« on: Saturday 13 April 13 08:57 BST (UK)  »
I've come across an old 17th C document which I've copied but don't have a hope of deciphering! I've done a few wills from the same era but this document is in another league, I just can't make it out at all.

I've been thinking of paying to have it done professionally but don't know where to start. Has anyone done this? How much did it cost? I've seen an hourly rate of £20 but I don't know how long it may take. Any tips on how to make sure a pick a reputable company?

I just wondered if anyone has access to the booklet of MI's for St Wilfred's, Grappenhall. I've found burials for Thomas Leigh (buried 21 July 1874) and Jane Leigh (buried 10 Jan 1869) in the Parish registers. I'm hoping there may be further information about their family group, children etc, on the headstone.

Thanks in advance.

Cheshire / CRO Township Packs
« on: Sunday 25 March 12 07:32 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone ordered a Township pack from Cheshire Record Office?

I'm thinking of ordering some but I'm not sure what's actually in them, the blurb on the website says they contain 'material from standard printed sources' and the link to the sample pack is currently broken so I can't see what's included.

Any experiences anyone can share would be very useful  :)

Occupation Interests / Mersey Flatmen - How do I find out the names of their boats?
« on: Friday 17 February 12 18:37 GMT (UK)  »
I've discovered that I have a dynasty of Mersey Flatmen in my family, is there an easy way to find out the names of the boats they sailed in? And once I have the boat names is there other information they can lead me to?

I've read the Michael Stammers book know that the Flatmen rarely owned the boats they sailed, is it still possible to find out the boat names if they didn't actually own the boat?
