One Name Studies: H to M / Luetchford
« on: Saturday 30 December 17 12:38 GMT (UK)  »
....   and sometimes Lutchford, Letchford, and even Leutchford

I am in the process of registering a one-name study on Luetchford (and close alternatives) with the Guild of One Name Studies.  They were nonconformists from the Sevenoaks area of Kent with a predisposition for the christian names Thomas, William, and Mary.  My maternal grandmother was a Luetchford.

I have already made a start in cataloguing births, marriages, deaths, baptisms and burials - but still have quite a way to go in doing that, and then more in working out how it all fits together.

My intention with the one-name study is for it to be a resource for all with Luetchford connections; it's not much use if I keep it to myself!

I'm not sure where this journey will take me, but I will update this post from time to time as regards status of research, website (when available) etc.  I the meantime happy to have posts on here or PMs on the topic (or via GOONS, once registration is complete)

The Common Room / Letters from the past
« on: Saturday 22 December 12 18:50 GMT (UK)  »
There's an interesting item in today's Guardian (UK) about a letter written 100 years ago for his descendants 100 years into the future by a Guy Wood.

It seems to be a fascinating combination of social history and predictions for the future

What letters do you have written by your antecedents?

Cork / Inquest November 1899 on Margaret Gibbs
« on: Wednesday 03 August 11 00:41 BST (UK)  »
Margaret Gibbs was the wife of one of my great great uncles (he was in the 17th Lancers). Her death cert says she was found dead having died at sea on 1 November 1899.  The information for the death cert was received from Alfred Blake, coroner for City of Cork, and that an inquest was held (actual date unclear).

Can anyone advise as to whether records of Cork coroner's court survive, and/or whether newspaper reports of the time are archived/available on-line?

Most grateful for any help with this.

Antrim Completed Look up Requests / Eglinton Street, Shankill - COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 12 July 11 07:11 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if someone from Belfast or who knows it well can help me.

My grandparents were boarding at 66 Eglinton Street, Shankill, North Belfast at the time of the 1911 census.  (He worked for HMV - at the time of their marriage 3 years earlier, in Croydon, Surrey, he had been described as a gramophone fitter.)

We are visiting Belfast in August and I was considering going to look for the house.

But I can't find the road on google maps  ::)  I did, on google, find reference to an Eglinton Street Church which had moved to the outskirts of Belfast from the Carlisle Circus area.

Did Eglinton Street disappear under the A12 road or has google maps just failed me?

Grateful for advice.  Thanks in anticipation

World War One / war medal roll index card - what does it mean?
« on: Monday 24 November 08 10:16 GMT (UK)  »
I've found a card under this series which doesn't look like any others and the explanatory blurb on the national archives site doesn't help, except to identify it as "Design 3".

The card is for John Thomas Merredew of the East Surrey Regiment.  The card shows, number, rank, date of enlistment & discharge.  But under Cause of Discharge it shows:

A.Order 265/17
Para: 2.B.i

Lower down there is nothing recorded except against action taken, which shows:

Inst E/374/1  (or List E/374/1)

Anyone able to help, or point me in the right direction?

Thanks in anticipation
