Wiltshire / Henry Wright - chimney sweep of Mere
« on: Friday 09 December 22 11:47 GMT (UK)  »
My 5x great grandfather was one Henry WRIGHT born c1730.

I've never found a marriage for him, just a possible to Sarah Shephard in Portsea in 1762 (I've researched the ones Gloucestershire and it's not them)

The couple have seven children together in Mere. Their second daughter Rachel married Aaron Maidment and it seems that their son Henry was apprenticed to a Henry Wright, chimney sweep of Mere, in 1803 when he was aged 11.

A coincidence - or could he have been apprenticed to his grandfather?

I might be clutching at straws, but I'm desperate to find out more about my Henry Wright who died a year after his wife, in 1826

Could there be an index of chimney sweeps anywhere?

Would Mere museum carry any resources I wonder.

The attached photo is one of my great grandmother's brothers, Fred Gatehouse (1868-1942) or Arthur Gatehouse (1889-1976).

The question is, which brother is it?  Fred married in 1891, Arthur in 1911. Could it have been a pre-wedding photo?

Both lived in Gillingham, Dorset where the photo was taken. The name of the photographer (shown on the bottom right of the picture) was E. Berry.

The chap in the pic, I think, looks to be in his forties.  Is anyone able to date the clothing he is wearing, or even his hairstyle?

Any help will be gratefully received.

Hi

Is anyone able to help with identifying the attached medals please?  They belonged to my son-in-law's grandfather.

I will post a second message attaching a photo of the same serviceman's badges.

We know that he came originally from Lubichowo and that he later fought in the battle of Monte Cassino.

Any information gratefully received.

Other Countries / Zambia: Lusaka - Frederick Edmund Hunt KEMP died 1965
« on: Friday 23 July 21 11:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I wonder if anyone could help with this?

Page 2 of the attached document says that F E H Kemp died without making a will, but page 1 contradicts this in 3 places.

Is it possible that the will itself was lodged somewhere in Zambia - if so, how would I go about obtaining a copy?

Kind regards

Surrey / GEORGE JONES of Farnham c1692-1766
« on: Monday 13 August 18 12:19 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I'm still looking for the parents of GEORGE JONES, my 7 x ggf.

I have his marriage (to Damaris HART) and the births of his children, but despite years of searching, I still have no idea where he came from or who his ancestors were.

If anyone is able to shed any light on George, I would be very grateful :)

Hi

Has the Surrey Wills website closed, or just moved to a new home?

I get an 'access forbidden' message when I try to access it.

Any info welcome.

Thanks,

Hi everyone,

I have a copy of Thomas WATERS death certificate containing the following information:

Thomas Walters died 9 Jul 1904 at the Chelsea Infirmary age 72, shoemaker late of 44 Slaidburn Street. Cause of death syncope pneumonia, injury caused by a fall, accidental. Certificate received from coroner. Inquest held 12 Jul 1904.

Of course, it may be that he just passed out and banged his head, but family legend has it that a wall fell on top of him! At Nanny Jan’s suggestion, I wrote to the LMA to see if they hold copies of the coroner's reports.  I received this reply:

“Inquests into deaths which took place in Chelsea c. 1904 were carried out by the Coroner for the 'County of London, Western District'.  I regret that relatively few coroners' records survive for London and we do not hold any coroners registers for this particular district between 1892 and 1930.  Neither are there any of the more detailed case papers prior to 1927.

I have also checked to see whether we hold any relevant records from Chelsea Infirmary (later St Luke's Hospital) but regret that none survive for the period in question, except for the following register which I have checked without success: CHBG/196/002 - Infirmary, Cale Street: Particulars of infirmary cases, 1902-1905.  As far as I can tell, no other records from the hospital are held elsewhere.”

They suggested I emailed Kensington and Chelsea Local Studies Library since they hold copies of local newspapers from that time. Someone there very kindly completed a check of the Kensington Post and the West London Press Chelsea News, but could find no mention of the accident, Thomas’ death or inquest. They looked at the nearest dated newspaper (July 15 for both) and the next copy.

So it seems I have hit the proverbial brick-wall.  Shall I just let this one go or is there something else I could try?
