United States of America / John Shepard Aitcheson of Connecticut/Massachusetts.
« on: Friday 18 August 17 11:54 BST (UK)  »
I am looking to get in touch with any descendents of John Shepard Aitcheson, who was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1837. His parents were Samuel Aitcheson and Grace McCubbin who were from Stranraer, Scotland.

He was a soldier with the 27th Massachusetts Volunteers during the Civil War. He married Mina Brigham in Chicopee, Mass. in 1860. He died in New York in 1872.

He had at least two children, Thomas Brigham Aitcheson (1865-1939) and Grace Bamford Aitcheson (1870-1933).

I am a descendent of John S Aitcheson's Uncle, Alexander. Our family line stayed in Scotland and the name eventually became Hutcheson.

Ross & Cromarty / Aulay MacAulay of Lochbroom or Lochcarron.
« on: Monday 19 June 17 19:31 BST (UK)  »
I am looking to find out more information about my ancestor, Aulay MacAulay who I think was from Lochbroom in Ross.

He was the husband of Christy Sinclair, who according to the 1841 census was born about 1791 in the county of Ross. In 1841 she lived in Janetown, Lochcarron. She probably died between 1841 and 1851.

Aulay had at least two children that I know of:

Annabella MacAulay
Born: about 1811 at Lochcarron or Lochbroom.
Married: 1st Graham MacPherson (died 1831-1837) 2nd Donald McLean (born 1811)
Died: 1889 at Janetown, Lochcarron.
Census: 1841, 51, 61, 81 living at Lochcarron.

Alexander MacAulay
Born: about 1815 at Lochcarron or Lochbroom. Probably 26/04/1814 at Inverlael, Lochbroom.
Married: Matilda McLean (born 1815)
Died: Unknown.
Census: 1851 living at Evanton. 1861 living at Fodderty.

According to Annabella MacAulay's 1889 death record her father Aulay was an Innkeeper. I don't have any further information about him.

I know it's a bit of a long shot but I was hoping that someone may be able to provide further information about Aulay, particularly in light of his job as an innkeeper and his distinctive name.

World War One / No. 1 Dispersal Unit Georgetown, Renfrewshire.
« on: Friday 06 January 17 15:03 GMT (UK)  »
My Great-Grand Uncle Neil McDonald was demobilised from his First World War military service at the "No 1 Dispersal Unit Georgetown (Paisley)". He was a native of Springburn and a Royal Engineer attached to the 52nd Lowland Division.

I would like to know exactly where this dispersal centre was situated.

I am assuming it was located at Georgetown, Renfrewshire, in the vicinity of Dargavel Burn, West of Glasgow Airport?

I know that there was a munitions factory there in those days and I'm guessing the dispersal centre was set up in those buildings?

It's hard to imagine hundreds of soldiers there today as it is now mostly forested land surrounded by empty fields.

Any maps or photos of the site would be appreciated.

« on: Wednesday 02 March 16 12:12 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently found the plot numbers of ancestors who are buried in Riddrie Cemetery near Glasgow. Unfortunately I have no idea how to find them and wondered if anyone knows where I can access a map of the cemetery grounds?

Lanarkshire / Forth or North Street, Dennistoun
« on: Saturday 05 December 15 19:14 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for a street location within Dennistoun. The street was called either Forth Street or North Street around the year 1900. I'm assuming that it no long exists, but I have no idea where it once stood as I can't find it on any map of the period.

I have found a Forth Street, situated just off of Port Dundas Road in what I suppose is now considered Cowcaddens...not really close to Dennistoun as we understand it today. I know there was a North St in Springburn, again, no where near Dennistoun.

I'm grateful for any help that can be provided!

« on: Thursday 06 August 15 16:21 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for information about the parents of a James McLean, who was born in Kilbrandon about 1788. I've reached a brick wall and in the small hope that someone has got further back I've listed what I know:

James McLean

Born: abt 1788, Kilbrandon, Argyll. (Death Cert lists parents as Neill McLean and Mary McLean nee McLean)
Married: Unknown date to Sarah (Marion) McLachlan who born at Auchnacraig, Torosay, Mull.
Died: 1856 Barrackan, Craignish, Argyll. Buried at Kilmelfort burial ground.

Known Children:
1. Mary McLean b. 29 Nov 1821, Auchnacraig, Torosay, Mull, Argyll.
2. Niel (Neil) McLean b. 24 Dec 1825, Kilmelfort, Argyll.
3. Mary McLean b. 1828 Kilmelfort, Argyll.
4. John McLean b. 1835 Kilbrandon, Argyll.

Census
1841 - Possibly listed as living at Black Mill Bay on the island of Luing, Kilbrandon, Argyll.
1851 - Listed as a Shepherd living at Barrackan in Craignish, Argyll.

Does anyone have information of this family further back? I can't seem to find a marriage record for James, nor a birth record for him either.

England / Ethel Boyington born circa 1900.
« on: Tuesday 30 June 15 12:26 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping someone might be able to help me find a woman named Ethel Boyington.

Her marriage record of 1919 states that she was born about 1900, and her father was a Marcus Boyington, listed as an engineer. Ethel was serving with the Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps when she married an Australian soldier in London named Stirling John Rogerson. She emigrated to Australia at the end of the war.

I don't see any Marcus Boyington listed in the records or census results. I read that Boynton is a possible alternate spelling of Boyington, but again, I'm not seeing any obvious connections.

I'd be grateful if anyone else researching this family could get in touch.

Australia / Nanny Hodge b. 1865 Moonta Mines, South Australia.
« on: Wednesday 17 June 15 15:10 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to do some research about a family and I am getting quite confused about the whole thing and hoped someone would be able to help me.

In particular I would like to find out more about the family of Nanny Hodge, who I believe was born at Moonta Mines, South Australia in 1865 and died in Adelaide in 1927. She married Andrew Wight (1866-1950).

Due to newspaper archives I am absolutely certain that her father was John Hodge (jnr), born abt 1839 in England, died in a mining accident in 1881 at Moonta Mines. She left a message of remembrance in a newspaper in 1889.

My understanding is that John Hodge (jnr) emigrated to Australia with his Father John Hodge (snr) and step mother Catherine Sallar (or Sellar).

The problem comes when I try to confirm Nanny Hodge's birth mother. Her birth record of 1865 says that her Mum was Catherine Sallar, but I believe this might actually be her step-grandmother. It would be more logical if her mother was Ann Trevorrow- who is listed next to many other births with a husband John Hodge. In saying that, in June 1865 there is a child born to John Hodge and Anne Trevorrow at Moonta. Nanny Hodge was supposedly born to John Hodge and Catherine Sallar in October 1865, also at Moonta - just a few months apart.

So what is going on here? Is the wrong name listed on Nanny Hodge's birth record? I feel like all the pieces are in front of me, I just can't put them together.
