Armed Forces / M.E. on "Tricolor"
« on: Friday 25 September 20 09:08 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me ?  On a soldiers records we have him "Embarked M.E. on "Tricolor" or at least this looks like it says this.
Was there a ship called Tricolor that took troops to Middle East orTobruk.
Later it says Disembarked 4 M.D.    in March, 1942
Embarked Xl9
Disembarked.  In August, 1942.
Are these numbers codes for ships?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

Armed Forces / How to interpret Army Record
« on: Wednesday 23 September 20 09:04 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I am paid to have my relatives Army Record digitised but I am afraid I am none the wiser as I do not understand some of the shortened (capital letters) used to describe what he has done or where he is.  Can anyone - who loves to delve into Army history - help me to decipher this.
Also it mentions "Embarked at Townsville for (or per) "David Shanks" - what does this mean?
I have borrowed the history of the 2/12th unit and I would like to match my relatives records with the history of this unit.  The man I am researching is Walter Charles Horsfall NX 11278.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  His records are now digitised with the National Archives of Australia.  Thank you

Europe / Germans speaking English
« on: Thursday 27 August 20 08:51 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone advise me as to what was the criteria when emigrating to Australia from Germany as far as speaking English was concerned.  Were you allowed to come with no English or would you have been expected to be able to speak some English before arriving.  When you did arrive how did you go about getting somewhere to live and work?  My research is for the Toelle family who arrived in 1855 on the ss Egmont. thank you

Could anyone tell me about the Queen Mary as a Troop Ship.  I had read about her first voyage as troop ship.  Did she make a 2nd trip with troops?  If so when and from where did she sail and who was on board?  Where did they land?Thank you

Armed Forces / Battalions, etc.etc.
« on: Friday 07 August 20 02:31 BST (UK)  »
As a baby boomer I am not clear on. how the Army works.  for my research I need to know how the
2nd AIF was set up.  I believe that the 2nd AIF was the 2nd  "?" of the Australian Infantry Force.
then the order was "?" Battalions ---how many men were in a Battalion?
How many in a unit? etc.etc.
The soldier I am researching was in the 2/12th Battalion.  He was from NSW but I am led to believe that this Battalion was mainly Tasmanians and men from Northern Queensland.
What was  the order of command: eg. General, Commander etc. down to a Private.
How do I arrange a copy of his military record?  His name is WalterCharles Horsfall NX11278. I need to know when he joined up and where he served.  Was he always with the 2/12th. If not who was he serving with and what areas did he see combat.  I believe he was mentioned in dispatches but as most of the unit was killed his heroic deed could not be awarded as there was no senior officers standing.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Armed Forces / Allotment
« on: Wednesday 20 May 20 12:46 BST (UK)  »
I have been told that my grandmother received 'allotment' money from her two sons serving in the AIF.  Can someone tell me what exactly this meant.  Whose money was it? Why was it sent to her? How did the system work?  Would be grateful for an explanation to clarify what I have been told. Thank you

Scotland / Spanish Flu
« on: Thursday 30 April 20 07:42 BST (UK)  »
With the current pandemic of Covid 19 it got me thinking about a relative (Margaret Copland b. 1894 in Govan) who died in 1919 (aged 24years) Her death certificate says the cause was 'influenza c.pneumonia'.  Can some medical person tell me - would that be consistent with Spanish flu or would it be just influenza/pneumonia?  Does anyone know anything of the dates and affect that Spanish flue had on the population of Govan, Glasow in 1919?  thank you
