Australia / Paying for hot water in your billy
« on: Wednesday 08 November 23 01:41 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone remember taking their billy on picnics and getting boiling water to make tea whilst out and about?  Did the shop keepers give this for free or did you have to pay for it?  For how long did this custom continue?  Appreciate any memories

Armed Forces / Anzac March in Sydney 1950-60s - Man tossing a mace into the air
« on: Sunday 05 November 23 08:02 GMT (UK)  »
As I child I remember seeing a man tossing a mace (I think that was what it was called)into the air and catching it as he marched along in the Sydney Anzac March.  Does anyone have any other information on this man or what he was doing etc.   I was told that if he dropped it then he would lie down on the road and let the rest of the march walk across him.  Is this true?

Australia / Junior Red Cross in 1950s at School
« on: Monday 02 January 23 23:48 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone remember being part of the Junior Red Cross at School.  We all wore white dresses with red cape and a veil.  My question is what did we do?  Did we have weekly, monthly etc. meetings - were they at lunch time or part of the school curriculum?  Did we have stalls to sell items or make items?  Was there a set written programme for a meeting?   Any information would be greatly appreciated to help with my memory.  I was a member but cannot remember meeting. thank you

Australia / Dancing at the Sydney Showgrounds - schools
« on: Wednesday 03 August 22 08:29 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone remember the school dancing that was performed at (I think) the Sydney Showgrounds. Each school  girl  would be given a list of dances and costumes to be worn.   When these were practiced at each individual school  and costumes made there was a combined rehearsal before the final performance.  Each year there was a different dance.  The year I danced we had large  cane hoops with paper flowers on them and dresses made in white, teal, apricot (I think these were the colours).  I believe it was organised by a Miss Hart.   I think it would be around late 1950s or early 1960s.

World War Two / Surrender in WW2.
« on: Thursday 07 October 21 08:04 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find evidence of soldiers that were at the Surrender.   I have been told orally that you had to be over 6' tall to be in this group.  Can anyone point me in the right direction to find out more e.g.  how many soldiers were there with the officers etc.  Is it true that you had to be over 6' tall.  Was the three armed services represented? I also can't work out whether it was the Japanese surrender or German surrender.
Was the Japanese surrender (on board the Missouri) only represented by Sailors?I have very little to go on - only oral history from an elderly lady.  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thank you
