New Zealand Completed Requests / Maori Name
« on: Tuesday 26 February 19 22:49 GMT (UK)  »
A relative of mine, Herman Gudgeon, had a sheep station at Tikitiki (East Cape, New Zealand) called Wharekihauponga.
It has been suggested that this translates as "Home amongst the many silver ferns".

Does that seem to be a good translation? (This iis for a Gudgeon family history I am writing.)

Australia / Jewllery Apprenticeship, J A PELL
« on: Monday 14 December 15 00:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,  I assume that jewellery manufacture was learned by apprenticeship in the 1800s.

I have a James Alfred PELL who made gold and silver jewellery in Goulburn in the 1880s and 1890s.  He was working for Mr Jerger, Jeweller in 1895 before apparently going into his own business in 1896.  He was known by his 2nd name, Alfred, and was born in Melbourne in 1859.

I would like to find out when and where he learned the Jewellery trade.
Thank you

London and Middlesex / Foundling, Cavendish Square, 1787
« on: Tuesday 02 December 14 03:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,  I have a Mary Cavendish born circa 1787 or earlier.
She was baptised at St Saint Mary-St Marylebone Road,St Marylebone,London on 1 April 1787.  The baptism does not name the parents and has a note which reads "(Ch found in Cavendish square abt 10 days old)"  I don't know how soon after the child was found that it was baptised.

Was there any church, hospital or orphanage in Cavendish Square at that time where a child might have been left?

If she is who I think she might be then she married Edward Coe in 1805 and is a widow living with their son, Silvester, in the 1841 census.  (However, this Marys' age is 57 - which potentially makes her a couple of years older than the foundling.)   I am comfortable that Edward Coe married Mary Cavendish in 1805. I am not so sure that she was the same Mary Cavandish who was the foundling in 1787.

Thanks,
Steve

Europe / Marriage in Fosano, Piedmont Italy
« on: Saturday 06 September 14 05:03 BST (UK)  »
Looking for the Marriage of Annibal VISTARINI and Anna GALLIMBERTI.
Said to have occurred in Fosano, Piedmont in 1852
(I have 3 references to their marriage in Piedmont.  One says 17 May 1852, one says 18 June 1852 and the other just says 1852.)
Anna is said to have been born in Fosano Piedmont, abt 1830 d/o Charles GALLIMBERTI & Louisa TOGNO (or TOGNOCA)
This couple emigrated to Australia in 1853.  The references to their marriage are from their children's birth certificates.  References to her parents are from the certificates for Anna's later marriages in Australia.
Thanks

Australia / NSW marriages: VISTARINI circa 1884
« on: Wednesday 04 June 14 05:04 BST (UK)  »
Looking for the marriage of Hector Ferdinand VISTARINI and Mary.   It is Mary who is the mystery.
They are thought to have married in Maitland NSW in 1884.  Between 1885 and 1890 they had 3 children.

According to the birth records the details of the mother are:
Mary WILTON born at Bando, married on 17 March 1884 at Narrabri, NSW
Mary WILLIAMS born at Mudgee, married on 1 July 1884  at St George, Qld
Mary PEARCE born at Mudgee, married on 18 March 1874 at Maitland NSW
thereby marrying the 3rd child mother before marrying the 1st and 2nd child's mothers.
I don't believe this; I think the clerk has miswritten 1884 as 1874.
Hector was the informant on the 1st and 3rd births.  Mary was the informant on the 2nd.  Hector signed his name. Mary made her mark.
There are enough consistencies between the birth records that I am confident we are looking at the same family.

Mary died on 7th June 1890.  Hector was the informant on her death.  Mary’s parents are shown as unknown.  All three children are listed as her children.  The death record gives her place of birth as Mudgee, and that she married Hector Vistarini in 1884 at Maitland.

Hector died on 24 Jan 1891.  All three children are listed as his children.  The box for marriage details is blank.
Hector’s details are consistent across the records except that at his death he was called Hector ROBINSON.  The newspaper reports and death record are both in the name of Hector Robinson.  It seems that he had been working and living under the Robinson name.  Why? We don’t know.  Mary’s surname changes at every reference – so if someone was hiding I suspect it was Mary.  (The children’s birth records are all in the VISTARINI name.)

After Hector died a brother of his from Victoria went to Queensland and collected the two eldest children.  I don’t know what happened to the youngest who was less than a year old at the time.

There is a family tree on Ancestry that gives her name as “Elizabeth Robinson”.  The owner of that tree has not responded to my requests for further information.

Looking for the Marriage and a surname for Mary. (She has 3 already but I am not confident of any of them.)

I suspect that they did marry in NSW (they didn’t go to St George Qld until about 1886).  I have tried various misspellings for Vistarini in the online index – with no luck.  I have tried various permutations of the wife’s name – searching for both her birth and marriage.

Cardiganshire / Glanystwyth Farm, Lower Llanfihangel
« on: Friday 14 March 14 05:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
My relative, Jonathan Pell, farmed at Glanystwyth Farm, Lower Llanfihangel , as well as being publican of the Belle Vue Hotel in Aberystwyth in the 1870s.  What I would like to find out is
1) where was this farm relative to Aberystwyth (there are several Llanfihangel place names nearby.) The family thinks the farm may have been near Borth.
2) what sort of farming might it have done.
Thanks

The Common Room / "Born in France"
« on: Monday 30 December 13 02:11 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Frank PELL who the census records report that he was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England 1874.  The family story is that he was "born in France".  He was born before the marriage of his supposed parents.  Is "born in France" a synonym for illegitimate? or is it possible that there might be a birth certificate for him in France.  I haven't found one for him in England either as Frank PELL or Frank ANDREWS (his mother's maiden name).
Thanks
Steve

Australia / Anne Bridget MAHONY
« on: Sunday 26 May 13 15:56 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for Anne Bridget MAHONY  - What I know about her is from her daughter's 1933 certificate of Marriage.

Anne is named as the mother of Marie Louise SMITH,
Marie Louise SMITH was born in Ballarat about 1908 according to the wedding cert. But no birth found in the Victorian indexes (online or CD)

Anne's husband (Marie's father) is named on the cert as John SMITH (what an unusual name) however I am not looking for him unless he helps me find Anne.  John was an Inspector in the Railways.

I have not found a marriage for John & Anne in Australia, NZ or UK.

Anne was probably Roman Catholic - her daughter's wedding was Catholic.

I am told the family lived in Ballarat East.

I have looked for other children in Victoria with these parents - both in births and deaths - no luck.

Anne Bridget MAHONY is a bit of a mystery,
Thanks Steve

Occupation Interests / Goldsmiths & Plumbers
« on: Sunday 12 May 13 14:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have an Edward Barnaby Gudgeon.  He was employed by the Bank of England from 1842 to 1877.  From 1749 he worked in the Gold Weighing Room.  This is documented in a letter from the Bank of England and confirmed in census records.
In 1870 he was admitted to the Freedom of the city of London as Edward Barnaby Gudgeon of London, Plumber.  What is going on? Its the same person (my cousin has the certificate that he was given.)  But his occupation was not plumber and it is the Company of Goldsmiths guild that oversees the Bank of England's gold (so I read).
In 1873 his son Henry John Oswald Gudgeon also received "Freedom of the City" and again he is a "Plumber" even though his actual occupation was "Merchant, General Export".

Why are they "Plumbers"?
Also, What does Freedom of the City entail?
Thanks
Steve
