Yorkshire (West Riding) / Records for support for illegitimate children.
« on: Tuesday 16 October 07 03:50 BST (UK)  »
What if any records are there in the Burley in Wharfedale area around 1823 which might show support orders for illegitmate children?

I suspect my 3greats-grandma Louisa MABBLE was born Louisa HARRIS in 1823 - Louisa HARRIS'  baptism shows her mother as Adelaide HARRIS a spinster. I have found Adelaide's subsequent marriage to a William FISHBURN so still can't explain where the MABBLE might come in.

Are there any records which might possibly show Miss HARRIS petitioning Mr MABBLE for the contemporary equivalent of child support?

(oh and I have Louisa MABBLE's marriage cert - the space for father's name is struck through - bah!)

Any thoughts appreciated - am at a loss with this girl!

« on: Saturday 14 July 07 08:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I realised today I have never posted about my Canadian family in this forum so I thought I'd cast the net out there and see who might recognise them - you never know!

My great-great-grandparents Edward John WAGNER and Charlotte Alice nee FITCH emigrated to Canada in 1910 and 1911 respectively (great-great-grandma waited for the birth of her first granddaughter who later became my Grandma!).

They left my Great-grandma in England but took their sons, Ernest Ivor Charles (known as Ivor) and Stanley Vincent (known as Vincent) with them. One son Lawrence was in the British Army, and one Albert, had already emigrated to Canada.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Louise MABBLE where are you?
« on: Sunday 27 May 07 02:27 BST (UK)  »
My great-great-great-grandmother Louise MABBLE is proving elusive!

According to the 1861 to 1901 census she was born in either Idle or Burley in Wharfedale, about 1823.

She marries John PRESTON in 1858 and I can find her  in every census from then. On her marriage certificate, for father, it is struck through and Dead written as occupation, which is a great help. Although she is 35 when she marries she says she is a spinster. I have tried looking for a marriage of a Louise to a MABBLE just in case but haven't found one either.

She should be somewhere in the 1841 or 1851 census but she isn't!

I can't find a Louisa MABBLE on the IGI, in fact there's hardly any MABBLEs at all (3 in Scotland!!)  - have searched under MABLE, MARBLE, MABELL.

Her name is clearly MABBLE on her marriage cert and on her daughter Eliza's birth cert.

Where is she!!! ::)

United States of America / MODEN in Henry County, Ohio
« on: Tuesday 01 May 07 23:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Wondering if someone is able to help me find the death of James and/or Maria MODEN who emigrated to Ohio from Norfolk in around 1854

James was born around 1827 in Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire, and Maria around 1829 in Hilgay, Norfolk.

I can't find them on 1880 US Census so am assuming they died between 1870 and 1880. In 1870 they are in Napoleon Township in Henry County.

I should mention that sometimes James thinks his name is Robert - on the 1870 Census he is listed as
 R MODEN

Hoping someone can help!

cheers

Karen.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / SKINN family - Swanland
« on: Sunday 22 April 07 03:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi All!

Just found out I have an East Riding connection! My 3greats-grandmother was Ann SKINN b. 26 Aug 1811 in Swanland. She married William HADLEY in 1835 in Handsworth in Staffordshire.

Her parents were Robert SKINN and Ann. Haven't yet determined Ann's maiden name - still working on that.

Would love to make contact with anyone with connections to this name - it's unusual isn't it!

Cambridgeshire / MODEN search
« on: Sunday 04 March 07 10:41 GMT (UK)  »
Wondering if anyone can help.

I'm trying to see if there is a relationship between John MODEN b. 1812 in Soham, and James MODEN b. abt 1827.

John married Sophia SIZER in 1834  in Stuntney and they emigrated to Ohio between 1854 and 1860.

James married Maria HOPLEY and they are said to have emigrated to Ohio in 1854. James had 2 sons John Edward (known as Ed) in 1858 in Grafton, Medina, Ohio, and Sizer R b. 1859 in  Ohio.

So John and James were in the same area of Ohio around the same time, and James gives his second son John's wife's maiden name as a Christian name. Why did he do that? ::)

I can't find anything on James which tells me if there is any kind of relationship. I've looked at the US census and they don't give place of birth other than England

Help!

Is anyone able to look for a possible Obituary for me for my Dad's first cousin Edward Ivor HUSBANDS.

I just found his entry in the death index. He died in May 2003 in Barnsley district. He was born 28 June 1941.

I would love to see if there is an Obituary and any extra family information it might contain!

Thanks heaps

Karen.
