Hey all!

I'm not entirely sure where the best place to post this request, so I hope here is okay?!

I'm hoping to find out who my ancestor was living with while she was living at 7 Upper Grove, South Norwood, Croydon, UK.
My Grandfather (George Lamont Horn) was born there on the 3rd November 1903. Both of them disappear on all records after this. I'm not entirely sure how long they lived there, but his mother, Violet Kemp Horn(e), was travelling in 1902, so it wouldn't have been long before.

This address has come up on another thread and another member commented that there was nothing of interest in the house or the area.
Violet heads back up to Scotland and is living without her son in 1911. His father had moved to Australia, on his own. George doesn't reappear on any known records until the 1930s.

My question is, if this is even possible; to find out who Violet and George are living with at this address?

Thanks in advance!
Chris

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Who is living with my ancestor?
« on: Wednesday 27 November 19 06:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I've found my ancestor, Violet Horne, living in Gourock, Scotland.
She claims to be married for 15 years (correct, although she did file for divorce 8 years earlier) and she clearly states that she has no children, which is incorrect, although that's a whole different story.

Who is living with her though in 1911? He is an engineer, born in Lanark, Glasgow.

Any help on his name would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance
Chris

Family History Beginners Board / GEDmatch - Please help!
« on: Tuesday 20 March 18 06:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all :)

So I have downloaded my DNA raw data to GEDmatch. I thought I would be able to get a lot out of it... So far, I haven't taken anything from it. It has to be one of the worst laid out sites I've ever come across. Most of the links (which are supposed to be there to help make sense of it all), don't work.

I've spent the day using all the calculators. I'm taking all the results with a pinch of salt, but I'm trying to get as much as possible out of it, but I am struggling to understand it all.

For example, what is this and what does it mean?;
1 Danish + Danish + Norwegian + Southwest_French @ 0.964049
2 Danish + Danish + Southwest_French + Swedish @ 1.141391
3 Danish + Danish + North_Dutch + Southwest_French @ 1.161246
4 Danish + North_Dutch + Norwegian + Southwest_French @ 1.162745
5 Danish + Danish + Danish + Southwest_French @ 1.181339

I did like the 'Predict Eye Color' section. It was spot on! :)

I understand it is still 'downloading' or something like that, so I'm not including matches in this post for now (this may come in a few days).

Any help for now, would be awesome!
Thanks
Chris

Australia / William Horn (1868-?) Did he really move to Australia?
« on: Tuesday 06 February 18 03:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all!

This is a brick wall I've been trying to smash down for a few years now and luckily I found an article the other day that has given me a fresh lead.

William Horn born in 1868, Glasgow, Scotland led an interesting life (from the bits and pieces I have found!). His father was George Horn and his mother Mary Nixon. I believe he was born as William Nixon Horn.
I've found him living at home in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census. In the 1891 census he is listed as an Analytical Chemist. The next record I found of him was leaving the UK for Chile, to take up a job there. He then marries out there in Taltal in 1896 to a Violet Kemp Thomson. All records then disappear.

I found Violet Kemp Horn coming back in early 1902, on her own. This is where it got a bit strange!
George Lamont Horn (their son), was born in November 1903 and William is listed as his father.
I found a newspaper article that was granting Violet a divorce on the grounds of desertion. She has been quoted to say that he had left her in Chile, and his words to her were along the lines of "I hope to never see you again". Then in the article, it states that when Violet had returned to the UK a few months after William in early 1902 and found that he had already set sail for Australia and he was apparently in Fremantle, WA.

However, I can find no records of William at all. And, although he is listed as George's father, the dates just do not add up.
Frustratingly, I have not been able to find any of them in 1911. George is then living on his own in 1921. Violet then emigrates herself to Australia, and ends up in Geelong, where she lives for 25ish years and dies.
On her death certificate, it states she is widowed, to William. And strangely that she has no children. She did die in a home and of "senility", so the staff at the home may not have been aware that she even had children.

I was hoping to find any records of William in Australia and if anyone can help, that would be amazing :)

Sussex / The Horn Family (Help!)
« on: Thursday 01 February 18 10:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all :)

I have previously attempted to find out some information about my G-Grandfather, George Lamont Horn (born 1903). Unfortunately, I know very little about this side of the family, and when I set up a post a few years back, everyone encouraged me to get the certificates. About 3 years later (and a university degree), I have returned to this brick wall and have now got George's birth and marriage certificate. However, nothing adds up...

Birth Certificate: George Lamont Horn, born 9th December 1903 in Croydon. Father; William Nixon Horn. Mother; Violet Kemp Horn, formerly Thomson. William is listed as a Chemist.

Marriage Certificate: George Lamont Horn married Ellen Linfield on the 23rd December 1933 in East Preston, Sussex. They are both listed as 30 years old. He is a Butler, she a Cook General.
His father; John Horn (deceased), but listed as a Chemist. Her father; William Linfield (deceased) - Labourer.

Everytime I have attemped to go past George Lamont, I have found nothing. This has me more confused than ever when I opened the letter today so find that his father's first name is completely different on both certificates.

I have many questions and I'm hoping Rootschat members will be able to help!
Why is the father's names different? (but his profession appears to be the same)
I have done many searches for Ellen Linfield, but nothing has come up with her being born in 1903 or the years either side. She may have lied, I guess.
Why can't I find anything on the 1911 census for pretty much any of the names above?
I've done many searches to try and find if I have the wrong George Lamont, but there only ever appears to be one around the dates.

A bit more information: Violet Kemp Horn (George's mother), dies in 1946 in Geelong, Australia. I have her death certificate. She is listed as a Widow to William Horn, but with no issue (the staff in the home she appeared to live in may not have known she had children).

Any help would be amazing, and sorry for the bombardment of information!
Thanks in advance,
Chris

Kent / Emma Moss (1855-1947) and Family
« on: Sunday 17 July 16 05:10 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

My ancestor, Emma Moss (1855-1947) was born in Stepney, London and dies in Edmonton, London.
She marries a Charles Thomas Dewhurst in 1872.

This is where things get tricky...
On the 1861 and 1871 census, she is seen to be living with her grandmother, Sarah Moss, who in born in Dover. There is a baptism record listing her father as John and her mother as Sarah, but lists her father on her marriage certificate as James (and not deceased).

There is no further mention of either her father or mother's names. I have put a thread on the London section, but they have got as far as they can and guided me here as Sarah (born 1800) and her children were all born in Dover. Her children that I have found so far are Charles (1833-?), John (1838-) and James (1848-). I would assume there is more, considering the gaps.

At the moment, I have a feeling that it could be John who is Emma's father. With him only being 18 at the time of Emma's birth and being a 'Commercial Traveller', this could be a possibility. Some have said that both her parents could have passed in between the years 1855 and 1861, but I thought I would have stumbled across a record of some sort, but haven't.

I was hoping if anyone could help me trace this branch of my family tree. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance,
Chris

London and Middlesex / Emma Moss 1855-1947
« on: Friday 15 July 16 06:29 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

It has been a couple of years since I have last visited this strand of my tree. I have done a post on it before, but unfortunately didn't get any further with it.

Emma Moss born 1855 in Stepney is proving to be extremely difficult. The issue lies with her parents, because by the 1861 census, she is listed as living with her grandparents James and Sarah Moss. This continues and there is no list of any parents.

I have had a theory that John Moss (listed in the 1851 census at James and Sarah's son), born in 1838, could be her father. This also links up with a baptism record that I found for an Emma Sarah Moss baptised in Bethnal Green in 1855 (parents - John and Sarah). However, Emma doesn't seem to ever use a middle name in any further records.
After the 1851 census, I cannot find John at all.

Many trees on ancestry link James and Sarah (both born in 1800) as Emma's parents, but surely this just isn't possible. I have for now linked John as her parent, but again, have only 'penciled' this in.

I am unsure where to turn next. I just feel like I have come to a dead end. I am unsure whether Emma was the daughter of a young John and partner, or whether both her parents have died in between 1855 and 1861. Or, I could have just stumbled across a family mystery!

Any help or guidance on this would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance,
Chris

Australia / Violet Kemp Horn(e)
« on: Monday 06 January 14 04:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hello!

So far I've had lots of fun finding out information about my great-great grandmother, Violet Kemp Horn(e). Sometimes its with an e, sometimes it's not. This may have been the time where the family permanently dropped the E, as from my great-grandfather downwards, none of us spell our surname with an e.

Violet Kemp Thomson was born in Gourock, Scotland in 1872. I understand she went to Chile in 1896, and returned married in 1902, however she has travelled back on her own, or at least, without her husband. I have no idea why she was in Chile....
She had my great-grandfather in 1903, in Croydon, England, but this is where the story gets even more confusing!

The next record I have found for my great-grandfather is his marriage in the 1930's in Sussex, England.
However, Violet is found travelling to Sydney in 1922, (on her own again!). Her husband, William Nixon Horn, is nowhere to be found, anywhere....!!! But her last address is listed in Scotland.

So she has travelled to Sydney, but the next record I have found for her is in 1931 in Bannockburn, Victoria. She is on the 1931, 1936, 1937 and 1943 electoral lists, all in Bannockburn.
Violet is a nurse.
And then she dies in Geelong, Victoria, in 1946.

There is the story, but I am wondering whether anyone can help me why she would move to Sydney in 1922, and how she ended up in Bannockburn, supposedly without any family.

I'm extremely confused, and I have quite a few pieces of the puzzle, but something is just not quite right.

Thanks in advance!
Chris

England / George Lamont Horn 1903-1976.
« on: Wednesday 06 November 13 14:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I have been researching my great-grandfather, George Lamont Horn for nearly 2 years now. I knew his birth date and his death date, but could not go any further back.
I spent ages going round and round in circles on the internet, with no luck.
I then turned to rootschat, and nobody could come up with much, so I was advised to get George's birth certificate. I spent a year after that researching, but found absolutely nothing, which I thought was a bit bizarre.

So I decided that I HAD to get the certificate. And it arrived this morning, after travelling 10,000 from the UK.
I now have the two names of George's parents. However, when I put their names into Ancestry, I still have absolutely nothing. No census records, no birth dates, death dates, wills, baptism records, or any links to other family trees.

So after another frustrating day, I have decided to return to Rootschat, and give you the extra information I have found out, to see if anyone can help me :). I am completely stuck!

George Lamont Horn
Born: 3rd November 1903, at home; 7 Upper Grove, South Norwood, Croydon, England.

Father's Name: William Nixon Horn
Father's Occupation: Chemist

Mother's Name: Violet Hemp Horn, formerly Thomson.

Mother registers birth on the 9th December 1903.

Can anyone help with more information on William and Violet?
Thank you!
Chris
