Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Wellingborough Grammar School. 1891
« on: Sunday 18 January 15 21:46 GMT (UK)  »
My Grandfather is on the 1891 census as a boarder attending;

The Grammar School, Mill Road, Wellingborough. (RG12/1213;Folio72;page7)

Does anyone have any information about this school. I have looked online and until recently thought that it had developed into THE WELLINGBOROUGH GRAMMAR, but recent history of the school on their own website indicates that it moved to its current site in 1881, ten years prior to this census. Hopeful that some local knowledge maybe out there!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Will need a bit of help please
« on: Sunday 09 June 13 09:52 BST (UK)  »
After your wonderful help earlier this week, I am hopeful for a bit of help again.
This is this last bit of the will, once proved in the Canterbury court.

It reads; ".... by the oath of Susanna Richardson ???? (See picture) of the deceased and sole executrix named in the said will...."
Susannah is the Widow of the deceased and the word used is definitely not widow.
Any help appreciated. Thanks

Kent / 18th Cent. Kent parish name
« on: Wednesday 05 June 13 12:14 BST (UK)  »
Trying to discipher an Ancesters Will. I am having trouble with a parish name, it looks like
'Loearn'
So far the areas covered in the will are;
Beltinge, Herne Bay;
Hoath, Reculver,
So I assume this parish would be in the same general area, as he was from Chislet, Kent.

Very hopeful of all the local knowledge out there.

Northamptonshire / Easton Neston, Towcester. Northants
« on: Tuesday 14 December 10 01:58 GMT (UK)  »
I have been tracing one of my Gt Aunts;

LILY EUGENE RICHARDSON, she was born in 1873 in Kettering, and worked as a governess.

Until recently, I had no information on her whereabouts since she was a child at home on the 1881/91 Census. A friend has found her burial when he checked on her fathers grave in KETTERING Cemetry and she is laid next to him, d 1924 in Northampton.

Now one of her brothers seemed to have listed her as next of kin at arrival on Ellis Island, NY in 1923, giving EASTON NESTON, TOWCESTER as her residence.

This appears to be a stately home that was subdivided in the 19th century and has since been sold off.
Does anyone have any information on this house, it's history of tennants etc.

I have come across several names for one person so far, but the name CRICK was used but nobody knows what it stood for!
Does anyone know if this is a particular abbreviation to a more well known first name.
Census names to date from this family are;
Dryfus/Divers
Peter
George
Hezk/Ezzie (suggested as abbr for Hezekiah)

World War One / Help to read Medal Card
« on: Tuesday 05 August 08 01:56 BST (UK)  »
I have my Granfathers medal card and I thought I was in luck as unusually there is some writing on the back. Unfortunately I am unable to work out exactly what it says.

Have a pre WW1 photo of him in a Police type uniform and think that the first bit of writing is a reference to the Met. Police. It then looks like a reference to India and something to do with medals. Lastly it looks dated 5/12/1 with initials underneath.

Strange date as I thought this card only referred to WW1 and not previous history.
Hope somebody out there can help!!?

Armed Forces / Boar War, Staffordshire Regiment
« on: Tuesday 05 August 08 01:26 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone point me in the right direction.

I am told my Grandfather, who was born 1866, was in the Boar War. Family history says he was a Cavaliary Officer and it was thought to be a North Staffordshire Regiment.

As I am not in the UK can only do checks via the internet, and I am not having any luck. No photos of him in uniform are available.
