Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Place of marriage
« on: Thursday 29 March 18 06:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi All, i was just wondering if anyone can clarify what a part of a marriage document says.
This is for my relative Margaret Anderson who married David Sanderson in Galashiels, Scotland in 1853.

To me it says "mist houses" ? that seems like a unusual name?

I can crop the who section if needed?

thanks in advance

Berwickshire / Anderson / Paterson age differences on census and death certificate
« on: Tuesday 20 March 18 11:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, i just had a query in regards to ages that are shown on census and other paperwork not matching.

I know in the 1841 census they apparently rounded down to the nearest 5 but even taking that into account the ages are quite different.

I am not sure if this is the lady in question telling little white lies about her age  :P or the way the person who wrote it down changed it?

This is the information i have

I have Christian Anderson born to James Anderson and Elizabeth Ford in Reedyloch Berwickshire on the 22 Sep 1802.

I have her dying in Coldingham, berwickshire in 1856 name Christina aged 52 married to a Alexander Paterson

However when i looked up the 1841 and 1851 census they are out a lot

i found one in 1841 Alexander Paterson 35, Christian 25??? as well as 5 children aged from 20-4 also they had a Mary Anderson aged 65 living with them who i am not sure who she is, she had a sister Mary but in 1841 should have been only 33ish

In 1851 i Have them in Coldingham Berwickshire owning a farm Alex Paterson is 52, Christian 40, one of the sons Alexander (jr) matches in age to the previous census as he was 9 in 1841 and 19 in 1851 and i am guessing their daughter Elizabeth/Betty is the same 7 then 16, but they had a daughter Isabella who was 4 and should have only been 13-14 and doesn't show in the 1851 (couldn't find her doing a quick check to see if working or with relatives)

In short  :P

Christian being "25" in 1841 when even with rounding up by 4 to 29 is still around 10-14 yrs difference??

in 1851 she added 15 years to herself and he added 17!! I know they were hard times back then but that too much hehehe  ;D

Mary Anderson doesn't show up on the 1851 census so i assumed she either died or moved in with another family?

Has anyone else had such huge differences in stated ages?

Thanks in advance.

Hi all, Hopefully this is the right place to post this?

I was wondering if i could get some opinions on a picture.

In the picture it has survivors of a mine disaster in Ballarat Victoria, Australia, one of the men is my relative, but the source where i got the picture only lists the names but not who is who.

I will post 3 pictures, the first will be Frederick Disney born 1847 the picture is dated 1869 so he should be around 22.

2nd picture will be my great grandfather dated 1905 he was born 1884 so similar ages.

3rd my grandfather born 1907, i am not sure of the date of the pic but he looks about the same age as well?

I have maybe narrowed it down to 2 of the people in the picture but maybe i shouldn't say so i don't  influence anyone>?

thanks in advance for any help or information.

Selkirkshire / Request lookup Anderson
« on: Saturday 17 March 18 04:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, for a number of years i have been trying to find more information on Some members in my family tree and had hit the brick wall.

However the other day i found some dates that may be linked to my family and wondered if someone would be so kind as to confirm this.

Originally my family tree started (as far as i had traced) in Edrom, Scotland.

A bit of background.

what i had,

JAMES ANDERSON born about 1773?
ELIZABETH FORD born abt 1777?

Iam not sure when they married but all their children were born around the Blackaddertown area in Edrom between 1798 - 1808.

MY line from them is George who was born in 1805.

Sometime before 1830 (when he married in selkirk) George moved to selkirk.

Now this was the point i was stuck at.

I had previously tried to find out what happened to james and elizabeth when george moved and couldn't find a record of them in either edrom or selkirk.

Then the other week i found the following information and unfortunately i forgot where it was i found the info :(

what information i found.

James Anderson born 1773
died 5 Nov 1871 Selkirk

Elizabeth born 1777
died 5 Oct 1876 Selkirk

I am not sure what cemetery they are buried at in Selkirk.

Hi i was wondering if this photo of my grandmother Audrey was too badly damaged and far gone to repair?

It is of her and her parents car an Esssex 6.

I am not sure what year is was taken but she was born in 1917 and i saw a similar looking Essex 6 that said it was made in 1929.

Any help of advice is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

She is with family friends children the Carrs

This was taken in Winchelsea, Victoria, Australia.

If possible and not too much trouble would i also be able to get a copy in colour?

Thanks in advance

Selkirkshire / Dunsdale cottages and Ettrick Mill
« on: Monday 08 June 15 19:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, i noticed that i have family members listed as living at dunsdale cottages in the 1841 and 1851 census.

For the 1841 the head of the family was listed as a carter (which i think he did in Berwickshire)
But for the 1851 one he is listed as a wool scourer at age 42.

I just wondered if anyone would know if Dunsdale cottages exclusively for Ettrick Mill workers?

If as i am not from the UK what is the best way to see any lists of workers there?

They had a son who died at 12 i was also wondering if he died in the mill in some accident? would they have records for that too?

Selkirkshire / Pictures of Selkirk in the early 1800s?
« on: Sunday 07 June 15 17:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, i was just wondering if anyone had or knew any good sites that had pics of Selkirk from around 1820-1860?

The only ones i have seen on google searches have mostly just included the market Square.

The street i am particularly interested in is Water row between the green and market place.

The business/house i am interested in would be the Bakery that Robert Emond ran there.

There is an old building located there now though i am not sure of it's age.

There were 2 Emonds in that street for sure between 1823-1841, the second Emond house is also an older house today.

Any Pointers would be a great help

Thanks
