Hello,

Just wondering if anyone would have a copy of this resource and if so, be willing to do a search for me?

The two people I am seeking are as follows;

WILLIAM FITZGERALD - I believe he arrived in SA from Ireland in 1846 on 'Canton' with wife Mary and son John.  His wife and son both died and then he remarried:

CATHERINE KELLY  - Possibly from Cork, Ireland.  Married William on 9 May 1847 at St Patricks, Adelaide.

Haven't been able to get back any further on these two other than their marriage in SA so hoping there might be a couple of extra pieces of info from the index.

I have posted previously on this couple:

(Apologies in advance if there is already a specific topic for this resource. Had a quick look but couldn't find anything  :)).

Thankyou!

Not sure if this has already been mentioned anywhere but if not, Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria have announced the following:

'To mark family history month, we have reduced the price of our downloadable, uncertified historical certificates to $20. This limited offer is for August 2019 only.'

Apologies if this has already been mentioned but I only discovered this for myself today!  Scotlands People now has records of families who departed the islands and highlands for Australia between 1852-1857.  These are free to search and view (with registration).  This is a great resource for possibly finding missing ancestors from those parts of Scotland!

Argyllshire / Jean Cameron (nee McEachern) - can't find death record.
« on: Thursday 25 April 19 04:08 BST (UK)  »
Having trouble finding a death record for JEAN CAMERON (nee McEachern).  Born approx 1808 in Morvern and died before 1859 as husband, Alexander Cameron, remarried a Mary Clark in the same year.  Jean is last showing on the 1851 census as living in Bunavulin.  (1841 census gives same details but shows DOB as 1811). Alexander was the Parish schoolmaster there for many years.  I believe Jean's parents to be Hugh McEachern & Marjory Cameron.  Jean and Alexander had a daughter Catherine who was my Great grandmother x 2.   Catherine died in Glasgow in 1862 but parents are listed as unknown on death certificate so no clues there. (Verified Alexander and Jean as being Catherine's parents through other relatives, census etc.) Have tried all name combinations for Jean (or Jane) in SP but to no avail. If she died before 1855 then possibly may not be a record.

Also, some time ago, I found a photo of headstone and inscription for Alexander but for the life of me can no longer find it! I was sure he was buried in Kiel Cemetery, Argyll and I copied the inscription but unfortunately didn't get all of it: '1879', 'Erected by Mary Clark his widow by a second marriage and by his brother Donald. In Memory of Alexander Cameron who died 17th December 1877 in his 77th year and who for a lengthend period discharged ......'  (rest of it was something to do with his role as schoolmaster from what I remember). I was pretty sure the photo was from Ralston genealogy pages but have contacted the site owner and he couldn't find it either.  Thought the inscription may have given a clue to Jean's date of death.

Any help much appreciated!

Lanarkshire / Glasgow magazine titles
« on: Wednesday 31 May 17 08:38 BST (UK)  »
I recently found out that my great grandmother wrote short stories that were published in magazines.  While I presume these were Glasgow titles because she always lived there, I cannot say for sure that this is the case. My great grandmother's name was Mary Taylor McDonald (maiden name) but she was married twice under the surnames of Martin and Menzies respectively.  She died in 1913, aged 41 (b. 1871).

Would anyone have any idea of any Glasgow magazine titles that may have been in existence within  the latter half of her life (which I am led to believe is when she wrote them) and how I would begin to find anything she may have written? (Unless she wrote under a pseudonym of course!). I know that Mary had also been a language teacher and apparently spoke three different languages but whether this would have any bearing on the type of magazines her stories were published in, I don't know.

Thanks,
Andrea

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / From Clyde at Havre?
« on: Friday 12 May 17 07:49 BST (UK)  »
Having been unable to find the death records of my ancestors, John and Sarah Jackson (nee McMillan) in Scottish records, I believe I have found mention of them in the Glasgow Herald of 1857 under the Shipping Intelligence list.   The information simply reads:

'John and Sarah, Jackson, from Clyde at Havre, 18th inst.'

Just wondering if anyone can please confirm whether this means they arrived at Havre on the 18th from Clyde?  (As yet I have been unable to find any immigration record of them elsewhere). Also, I am not sure which Havre this is as I believe there was Le Havre in France and Havre in Montana, USA.  Would there be reason to immigrate or travel to either in 1857 other than for a new opportunity?

Thanks,
Andrea

New Zealand Completed Requests / Colin McLachlan - Union Sawmills
« on: Sunday 04 October 15 07:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Just recently found some information about my Great Great Uncle, Colin McLachlan who may have worked at Union Sawmills, Brunswick near Invercargill. (found a piece of paper in my Great uncles old address book with Colin's name and the sawmill and 'uncle' which would confirm it's my great, great uncle!)

Colin was born in Glasgow in approx 1852/3 to Hugh McLachlan and Catherine Cameron. He had a brother Hugh born in 1857 who I have plenty of information on but have never been able to find what happened to Colin after the 1861 census.

Colin's mother Catherine died in 1862 in Glasgow. Hugh went to live with another family after his mother's death and until he married. His father was a merchant seaman so not sure where he ended up. So I  believe Colin may have immigrated to New Zealand although I cannot find a record of this either.  I've found a few death records for Colin McLachlan around Invercargill but none which I can pinpoint to match his age.

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about the Sawmills?  I found an add in an old NZ newspaper that says it was owned by JH Dawson and Sons and was at One-Tree Point, Invercargill in 1884.

Previous details are in the following link:

Thanks in advance,
