United States of America / Charles James Spry Palmer, b 1857 England
« on: Saturday 22 January 11 14:19 GMT (UK)  »
The above named guy was married to my relative Selina BINDING in 1916, but prior to that led an interesting life travelling the world.

In 1896 he was in British Columbia, Canada, but the next sighting of what seems to be him is in 1903, when a Bertha Agnes Palmer divorced a man of that name in San Francisco (see thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=508104.new;topicseen#new)

Can any kind person check to see if they can spot him in the USA please? I'm looking between 1896 and 1911 specifically. He was an actor and singer, was sometimes described as having his own theatre company, and may have used the name as above, or hyphenated  as "Spry-Palmer". I would particularly be delighted if anyone could find the marriage with Bertha Agnes, as any further information about that would help confirm (or deny) if this is our man.

Many thanks, Marion

England / Alice Mary (May) BINDING or SPRY-PALMER b 1896
« on: Wednesday 19 January 11 10:13 GMT (UK)  »
I'm hoping that someone can help find out what became of the above named lady after 1932?

Alice Mary BINDING was, according to her birth certificate, born in Barton Regis Workhouse, Bristol, on 24 June 1896. Mother was Selina BINDING, single woman, a domestic servant. Her father was not named but there is very little doubt he was (Charles) James SPRY aka SPRY-PALMER, a travelling actor/musician.

In 1901 Alice was in Horfield, Bristol, listed as Mary A, and being cared for along with several other children by an Amy Hoare.  Mother Selina was working as a servant fairly nearby in St Michael, Bristol.

In 1911 I believe I have Alice in Chorley Wood, Hertfordshire, working as a general domestic servant. Selina has not yet been found in 1911 but I believe her to have been in London.

31st August 1916, Charles James Spry PALMER and Selina BINDING were married in St Pancras Register Office. He stated he was a widower (but in fact I believe he had a wife living in New Zealand).

In 1932 Alice was informant on her mother's death certificate and signed herself A.M. SPRY-PALMER. Her father James died in 1924, and both parents died in Pancras Registration District.

I can find no further trace of her after 1932 in the BMD indexes. Her mother Selina was my great-grandmother's sister, and as far as I know there was no family contact with Alice, who was known to the family as 'May' after 1932.

Can anyone suggest a next step? She would have been a 36 in 1932, and apparently unmarried at that time.

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Mary Ann Jane CARTER, 1851 census
« on: Tuesday 21 December 10 18:29 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone please help locate my missing ancestor?

Mary Ann Jane CARTER (nee CARTER!) was born about 1815, and according to the 1841 census, not in Notts. I know her father's name was James, occupation stonemason, but not where he lived.

in 1837 she married James CARTER in Nottingham, and they were living in Mansfield in 1841. By 1851 8 children had been born, the youngest being Marian who was born April 1850 and died early 1851 (death registered in March quarter 1851)

The 1851 census shows James (married) and the surviving children in Church Street, Mansfield, but Mary is not there. I've tried many times to find her without success. She was definitely alive then, as she died 1854 in Mansfield.  I suspect she went to stay with family, but where???

Anyone who has better luck would be very much appreciated!!

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / Kidderminster church registers
« on: Sunday 19 March 06 17:41 GMT (UK)  »
If anyone has access to Kidderminster  parish records I would be very grateful for a lookup.

My ancestor Wyatt CATER was married for the second time in Kidderminster - Malden HINTON, Jan 1753.

However, he had a previous marriage which I cannot find in his home parish of Stapleton, Gloucestershire.  A daughter Nancy was born about 1749 and she, also does not appear in the Stapleton records.

So I'm looking for any mention of CATER between 1745 (when Wyatt reached the age of 20) and 1753 - a marriage, death of the first wife or baptism of the daughter.

Been stuck with this family for a long time, but recently came across a document that suggests he was in Kidderminster before his marriage, hence the request.

Any help much appreciated

England / Chancery Court - abt 1682
« on: Friday 03 March 06 20:00 GMT (UK)  »
Any suggestions as to how to find out about a court case in Chancery which took place around the above date?  I have what seems to be a witness  statement referring to the case, regarding a property in Gloucestershire.  An ancestor of mine seems to have bid for a house and incurred the wrath of the local landowner!

The following family appear in 1891 in Thicket Road, Stapleton, although Hannah MILLARD was misindexed as Hannah SCUSE.

Grandma Hannah died 1918 less than 1/2 mile away, and Sarah was still alive in 1920, so where were they in 1901?  Hoping a new pair of eyes might find them!

Dublin / St Werburgh, Dublin, look up request
« on: Tuesday 06 September 05 07:40 BST (UK)  »
I would very much appreciate a lookup in St Werburgh (Anglican) records please

William CARNEY or CORNAY was born in or near Dublin Castle in about 1799.  This date is calculated from his death certificate so may be a couple of years out either way.

Would be REALLY grateful if anyone could take a look and see if his baptism is there.  He is known to have had 2 brothers (at least) but it is William I really want to find.

Thanks in advance
