Dublin / Kingstown marriage 1774
« on: Wednesday 04 January 23 16:41 GMT (UK)  »
A marriage appears in Kingstown parish on 8 March 1774, for Ned Murphy and Winifred Mullen, on RootsIreland.

However, I cannot find the marriage in the National Library church registers images for Kingstown parish on https://registers.nli.ie/.

I would love to see the actual parish register image. Any suggestions why it is not there? Many thanks.

Dublin / Returning emigrant 1850s?
« on: Monday 02 January 23 01:47 GMT (UK)  »
Two brothers born in Shankill, Co.Dublin, Nicholas Kearney (1818-1897) and Peter Kearney (1821-1899).

Nicholas married Sarah Hilliard in Westland Row in 1845. He next appears in the US census for 1850, 1860 and 1870, living in Northampton, Massachusetts. He had a family there, and died in 1897.

Peter married late, to Jane Toole in Little Bray in 1879. He would have been 58. They had no family, and he died in Shankill in 1899, passing his farm to his nephew.

Surprisingly, a Peter Kearney appears living with Nicholas in Massachusetts in the 1850 US census, the same age. Was it unknown for Irish emigrants to the US in the 1850s-60s to return to Ireland? Could be why he married late? Just wondering if anyone else encountered returning emigrants.

Wiltshire / Martha Nutley
« on: Tuesday 03 May 22 19:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am trying to piece together a fragmented jigsaw for a Martha Nutley, mother of Jesse Nutley (1747-1822).  Here are the pieces I have.

8 Jan 1821 - probable christening in Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire.  A christening appears on Ancestry in Trowbridge, Wiltshire for Martha Nutley on the same date.  Most surely the same christening, but why would it appear in Great Bedwyn and in Trowbridge?  A transcription error?
"England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N2C2-TVT : 25 February 2022), Martha Nutly, 1721.

25 Jan 1747 - christening of Jesse Nutley (illegitimate), son of Martha Nutley, in Burbage, Wiltshire.
"England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J7DF-54G : 24 February 2022), Jesse Nutley, 1747.

24 Oct 1756 - marriage of Martha Nutley and Richard Stratton in Hampshire.
"England Marriages, 1538–1973  ", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N61Z-DY7 : 13 March 2020), Martha Nutley in entry for Rich. Stratton, 1756.

19 Dec 1756 - christening of Sarah Nutley, mother Martha Nutley, in Inkpen, Berkshire.
"England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JM25-9MX : 24 October 2021), Sarah Nuttley, 1756.

16 Jun 1759 - marriage of Martha Nutley and Richard Stratton in Inkpen, Berkshire.
"England Marriages, 1538–1973  ", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NK1B-MY4 : 24 October 2021), Martha Nuttey or Nutley in entry for Richard Stratton, 1759.

4 Nov 1759 - christening of James Stratton, parents Richard Stratton and Martha, in Inkpen, Berkshire.
"England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NP2P-1MF : 24 October 2021), Martha in entry for James Stratton, 1759.

7 Feb 1785 - burial of Martha Stratton in Inkpen, Berkshire (Ancestry).

If these all relate to the same Martha, then she moved around, from Great Bedwyn, to Burbage, to Inkpen.  Two marriages appear, one in 1756 in Hampshire, and one in 1759 in Inkpen, both to Richard Stratton.  I guess one to be a notification, but why a three year difference, and why Hampshire?

Can anyone please throw their eye at this, and tell me if they see any discrepancies, any suggestion that there is more than one Martha Nutley, or any reason why two marriage sources would appear, on very different dates?  Can anyone find any other sources of interest?

Many thanks.

Laois (Queens) / Monatown, or Newtown, County Laois
« on: Tuesday 28 December 21 22:12 GMT (UK)  »
The attached Laois baptism image reads very like Monatown.  The best guess I can make is that it refers to Newtown, County Laois.  Is anyone aware of the existence of a Monatown, or are there any other suggestions, please?  Many thanks.

Dublin / Children of Francis Martin, engine driver
« on: Thursday 22 July 21 17:09 BST (UK)  »
My 2nd great grandfather Francis Martin (1833-1900) was an engine driver in Dublin.  He was married to Mary Byrne (1836-1906) from Sleamaine in County Wicklow.  I thought I had their family of six researched and finished, but I have just found another birth registration which doesn't make sense.  Here are the six I already had (verified by birth registrations, and other documents):

Peter Martin (1866-1927), married Winifred Nolan in 1889.
John Martin (1868-), nothing further found.
Mary Martin (1871-1955), married John Callaghan in 1892.
Francis Martin (1873-1918), married Mary Byrne in 1906 (same name as his mother).
Patrick Martin (1875-1918), unmarried.
Elizabeth Martin (1880-1970), married Ralph Connor in 1900 (my great grandparents).

Here is the seventh birth registration I have just found:
Mary Martin (1879-)

The first guess would have been that the earlier Mary Martin of 1871 died young, and there was a second Mary Martin in 1879.  But the 1892 marriage is confirmed (father Francis, engine driver), and that does not fit with an 1879 birth.  All the birth and marriage registrations are on Irish Genealogy.ie, and are beyond dispute.  So how could Francis and Mary Martin have had another child on 10th Oct 1879 in 17 New Street and called her Mary (my great grandmother was born on 12th Oct 1880 in 17 New Street)?  Two Mary Martins, both surviving sisters?  Would the same child have been registered a second time, eight years later?

Many thanks for your thoughts on this puzzle.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / 10th cousin?
« on: Friday 05 March 21 09:43 GMT (UK)  »
I have a DNA match on Ancestry, 11 cM across 1 segment.

This gentleman has a large tree, and although Ancestry offers no common ancestor, he has the same 9th great grandparents as me, Edward Nutley and Issard Kelme, born in the 1590s.

I assume that we must be more closely matched than 10th cousin according to the DNA, but I cannot find any other connection.

My question is, if I do find a closer match, do I discount any DNA match with our 9th great grandparents, as being out of range of autosomnal testing?

I have a DNA match on Ancestry with a 3rd cousin once removed.  However, Ancestry says we are matched through my 2nd great grandfather only, not my 2nd great grandmother.

Her 2nd great grandfather (my great granduncle) is the only one among six siblings who I found no baptism for, though he seems to have been born fourth of the six siblings.  His 1877 marriage cert states both my 2nd great grandparents as his parents.

My question is, could he be a full sibling to the others, and we have simply missed my 2nd great grandmother's DNA, or is the DNA telling us that he was definitely a 'brother from another mother?'  Many thanks.

EDIT:  We share 51cM over 3 segments.

Wiltshire / Great Bedwyn / Trowbridge
« on: Thursday 29 October 20 16:20 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching a number of Nutley / Hall baptisms and marriages around 1690-1718 in Wiltshire, and a few of the records I am interested in are listed twice on Ancestry.com, in Great Bedwyn Wiltshire, and Trowbridge Wiltshire.

Now looking on the modern map, Great Bedwyn and Trowbridge are over thirty miles apart.  How would baptisms AND marriages be listed for the very same people, on the very same days, in both areas?

I am looking for baptisms and marriages involving Edward Nutley and Elinor Hall.  One example shown below.  Many thanks.

Surrey / Ead / Heady
« on: Thursday 29 October 20 09:14 GMT (UK)  »
I am searching for the baptism of William Heady of Surrey (married to Charlotte Sink 27 Nov 1785 at Ockham).  A baptism appears for a William Ead on 30 Jun 1765 in St.Peter's Woking, just five miles away.

I have found various spellings of the name Heady, including Hedey, Edey, Eddy.  A name history search lists the name Ead as a different name, but I am inclined to think in this case, so close in area, that it is just another spelling of the same name.

Has anyone any thoughts on this?  Has anyone else linked Ead and Heady in Surrey?  Many thanks.
