Hi All
I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but I cannot seem to find the date that this took place!  I've tried Googling, but to no avail😕

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Is this Lily's mum?
« on: Monday 01 November 21 14:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all.

This is an ongoing mystery, as detailed in my previous post:-
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=648730.54

I am trying to rule out Mary Ellen Boswell #3 in the above post, as being the mother of my Great Auntie Lily who was adopted by Walter & Mary Lyon as a baby in 1904.

I attach the 2nd page of a letter sent by Lily's mother (who refers to herself as E Boswell) to the Lyons when Lily was 2 months old, in June 1904.  I also attach a snippet of a marriage certificate showing Mary Ellen Boswell's signature.  The marriage was actually in 1900, so it's not likely to be the right Mary Ellen, but I'm not ruling anything out, especially as the groom (George Henry Ball died later in 1904).

I hope this makes sense!
Thanks for reading.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Cheshire Record Office L/U Please
« on: Monday 08 May 17 16:24 BST (UK)  »
I have requested the Brixton Petty Sessions document from 1898 which has now arrived at Chester.  Before I pay a search fee ( I am unable to travel up to Cheshire in the near future) is anyone visiting soon that could look to see if the identity of my 2xG grandfather can be discovered?.  The document isn't indexed, but is in date order, and I know the date of my great grandmother's birth.

Thank you.

Terri

The Common Room / Life Log Book - where can I buy one?
« on: Tuesday 24 January 17 09:51 GMT (UK)  »
Yesterday on the Chris Evan's Radio 2 show they were talking about WDYTYA and mention was made of a 'Life Log Book' which can be given to a family member to record their memories of a particular period in time or person.  I would really like to buy one but, despite Googling, I am unable to track one down in the UK.  The closest is one I came across is for a grandmother, but I want to give it to my father to write about when he met my mother.  Maybe there's an alternative name for it?

The Common Room / Ancestry subs query
« on: Monday 04 April 16 17:14 BST (UK)  »
In January I took advantage of Ancestry's offer of 4 months UK subscription for £5 per month.  My last payment at that price will be made on 24th April.  I'm thinking of cancelling April's payment because my son got an e-mail offering premium membership for just £1 if you sign up before 5th April.

I know that if I cancel my current subs, it will run until 24th April but, if I then opt for this other offer, will I have 2 subs running at once, or will the new membership get tagged on the end (I.e. after 24th April)?

I know we're not talking about a lot of money here, but if I can get it cheaper, I will!

Hopefully I've explained my quandary well.

The Common Room / The National Archives, Kew
« on: Monday 28 March 16 20:21 BST (UK)  »
I'm visiting TNA for the first time on Wednesday, and am looking for hints & tips to make the most of my day.

I would especially like to look at paternity cases for late 1800s to early 1900s.

I understand that certain documents require pre-ordering.  Does anyone know which records are affected?

Cheshire / Spital Boughton "House of Refuge"
« on: Monday 29 February 16 21:00 GMT (UK)  »
I have come across an establishment at 2 Christleton Road, Spital Boughton on the 1881 Census where the head of the household, a widowed woman, is listed as being 'matron in charge of house of refuge', with 'hosp serv' scrawled above.  Living with her are her are her son & daughter, and nine 'inmates', who are all unmarried girls aged between 14 & 19 years old from various parts of the country; only two from Cheshire.

I've Googled without success, and this address does not seem to appear on the '71 or '91 Censuses.  I would like to find out more about this place, so would appreciate your expertise.

My personal opinion is that the inmates were all pregnant, but I could be barking up the wrong tree.

The Common Room / Arthur Beattie & June Duffy evacuees in Cheshire 1939?
« on: Friday 22 January 16 19:13 GMT (UK)  »
At 16 Princes Park, Northwich is Arthur (T) Beattie, b.21 Feb 1933, at school.  He's living with my Gran & Great Aunt (both young single ladies), and some boarders (I think).

At 30 Southview Road, Chester is June Duffy b.19 Mar 1935 - BABY was put in the occupation column.  She's living with my Great-Gran, husband & brother-in-law.

My question is: Have Arthur & June been evacuated to Cheshire?

Your opinions & expertise would be much appreciated.
