Angus (Forfarshire) / Weavers/Millworkers in Dundee (or Forfar?)
« on: Wednesday 26 October 16 22:40 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping that somebody may recognise the people or the building/background in this photo. My family held onto this in their photo collection, which has now been passed to me. There were no written notes or printer's mark on the photo. Due to my family's connection to Dundee and millwork from the late 1800s until the mid 1900s, I suspect this is probably taken in Dundee. I have many other photos and don't instantly recognise anyone who appears in other photos, perhaps someone reading this will recognise someone. My family names (and various branches) who may possible appear in the photo include Massie, Stewart, Wilson, Nicol, Ironside, Robertson, Hutcheson (but not an complete list)

Scotland / Millam family in Angus and Perthshire
« on: Tuesday 04 February 14 00:08 GMT (UK)  »
hello. i have been working on the Millam family covering the period of 1650-1800 and some folk a little later. i have come across a lot of info on one particular family, James Millam born c.1777 in Newtyle, who married Mary Doig, which has helped me to discount some of the Millams.

I am descended from Anna Millam, b.1746 in Meigle. She married James Small in 1779 in Meigle. I believe her father was John Millam.

I have looked into as many Millam/Milliam/Millem/Millum etc as i can find, but i am struggling to fit family groups together. I have a 'jigsaw' of all Millams recorded from Perth, Errol, Kettins, Meigle, Newtyle, Alyth, Auchterhouse and Strathartine. I have now got some ideas of who may be family due to date/location.

I am trying to confirm whether I have the correct Anna, and then trying to follow her Millam line back further. There are a lot of people looking into Millams in England and USA but not many at all in Scotland.

Is anybody out there looking into the Millam name in Perthshire or Angus/Forfarshire? I am happy to help untangle things if there is someone else out there like me!!

Occupation Interests / Contortionist Paul Minno (Alexander Wilson)
« on: Friday 18 May 12 01:24 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for some information on my great grandmother's brother Alexander Wilson, born c.1882 in Dundee. i know about his childhood, his parentage (Alex Wilson b.1855 and Elizabeth Stewart b.1859) and his many siblings, but he had a 'stage name' of Paul Minno and was a contortionist.

I am trying to confirm the family story that he was married to a trapeze artist, and also whether she actually did fall to her death during a performance without a safety net.

Was there a regular circus-type event in dundee where he could have started out?

The only clues i have are some photos of his contortion (looks very young, i reckon he must be 15 or 16, so maybe taken c.1897) and a business card, addressed 123 Princes Street, date unknown. I found i reference to 'an english clown named Minno' in a private online collection of circus history memorabelia, but no links and nothing to elaborate on it. Any ideas grately appreciated! Thanks

Angus (Forfarshire) / James Stewart, Seaman, 1840-1860
« on: Sunday 13 May 12 20:42 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for my ancestor James Stewart, a seaman based in and around Dundee.

He was born c.1824 to George Stewart (harbour porter) and Margery Baxter. I have his SECOND marriage, 25 Apr 1856, to Mary Hunter in Dundee. Both were living in the Seagate in Dundee, he a widowed Seaman (both parents deceased), she a Seamstress originally from Cupar Angus.

I am trying to fill in the gap from birth to this marriage. He must have married first time c.1844 (aged 20) and i know he was living in Cupar angus with this wife when he survived a shipwreck and she died from a gas leak (as the legend tells). Please see the attached story and image. I can only assume that he would take some time to grieve before remarrying, so i would expect to find the death of his wife and the shipwreck somewhere in the region of 1845-53.

I would like to confirm the name of his first wife and the date of their marriage. I also wish to track down the ship that was wrecked and anything else about his life as a seaman in general.

If anybody can help me I would really appreciate it. I have spent the best part of a year trying to track down anything I can, but have come up empty.

If anyone shares this ancestor with me, I have a lot of info on his daughter Elizabeth Stewart born 5 Aug 1859 and her family (the Wilsons).
