Ireland / Help with place names
« on: Sunday 20 September 20 23:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

I'm having an issue locating a few birthplaces in Ireland I have come across from an 1851 census from Scotland.

Matthew Gillies, 67 (born 1784), at Balahchantie, Ireland.
Catherine M Alister, Wife, 48 (born 1803), at Moy Antrim.
Effy Gillies, Daughter, 24 (born 1827), at Kilmora, Ireland.
James Gillies, Son, 16 (born 1835, at Amory Anoin.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Ancestry DNA Update - General Query
« on: Friday 11 September 20 17:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone

As with everyone else I have had my DNA results updated.
Previously it was - Ireland & Scotland 52%. England, Wales & NW Europe 23%. Eastern Europe & Russa 18%, Germanic Europe 6%, Baltics 1%.
Now it is - Scotland, 42%. Ireland, 31%. Eastern Europe & Russa, 16%. Wales, 7%. England & NW Europe, 4%.

Now my understanding of DNA is that you get 50% from either parent, and 25% from each grandparents and so on.

My paternal grandparents were Scottish, with some Irish roots. My maternal grandfather was Polish, and my maternal grandmother was Welsh (English father).

Because my Ireland & Scotland results equate to 73%, and I only get 50% of that from my father, would that mean that I get 23% Irish/Scottish from my maternal line also?

Apologies if I am completely wrong in this assumption.

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / John Brown & Elizabeth Osman Bo'Ness
« on: Sunday 06 September 20 23:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for some help to what became of the above John & Elizabeth.

They married at Bo'Ness, 18th March 1828. It reads - 'John Brown Mariner & Elizabeth Osman in this Parish Enrolled their names to be proclaimed for Marriage'.

They had one child that I can find. Margaret Brown, the record reads 'John Brown Mariner & Elizabeth Osman had a lawful Daughter born 11th & Bapt. 30th July 1829 named Margaret'.

Apart from this, I can't seem to find any other records for the family after the birth of Margaret. Elizabeth Osman's parents were Robert Osman & Margaret Liddell.

This family is part of a wider family puzzle that I am trying to solve, so any help would be hugely appreciated. Thank you!!

Lanarkshire / Fleming Children of Glasgow mid-1800's
« on: Friday 04 September 20 21:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

I am looking for help tracing two Fleming children, siblings of my 3x great grandmother.

They are - John & Agnes (Nancy) Fleming.

1851 living at 45 Shuttle Street, Glasgow.
Surname   Forenames   Relationship   Marital Status   Sex   Age   Occupation   Birth County   Birth Place   Disability   Notes
FLEMING   John   Head   M   M   50   Carter   STI   Dennyloanhead
FLEMING   Mary   Wife   M   F   44      ANS   Montrose
FLEMING   Nancy   Dau   U   F   18   Flax Spinner   LKS   Glasgow
FLEMING   Mary   Dau   U   F   16   Flax Spinner   LKS   Glasgow
FLEMING   John   Son   U   M   11   Callenderers Apprentice   LKS   Glasgow

I can't seem to find what happened to John Jr. & Agnes Fleming. Nor can I find any concrete birth record for John Sr. This by far is one of the most mysterious and elusive family lines in my tree!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone tell me if I have found the right marriage record for Ludwik Golba please?

Thanks - Keelan

The Common Room / Ancestry Image Issues

Just curious if anyone is having issues viewing records on Ancestry? I tried contacting Support but it also says the page is unavailable. Have checked if Ancestry is down but it says it's working fine.

Thanks - Keelan

Montgomeryshire / Parents of David Evans born 1844 Trefeglwys
« on: Friday 03 July 20 14:11 BST (UK)  »
Afternoon everyone,

My 2x GG was David Evans of Trefeglwys. He married Elizabeth Francis in 1875 at the Registry Office in the District of Machynlleth (unsure whether this was actually in Machynlleth or somewhere within the area of Machynlleth). On the marriage record, David was a widower and his father is David Evans a Labourer.

I've been searching for parish baptisms in Trefeglwys between 1841 - 1845 (as all Census returns give a rough year of birth of 1843-44).

Baptismal records I have found for David

David born to David & Mary Evans at Manafon in April-May 1844 , however I have followed the census paper trail for this David and it doesn't tie in with my David.

David born to David Evans & Catherine Jones at Trefeglwys, baptised April 19th 1844. David & Catherine married 1842 at Trefeglwys. I can't seem to find this family in 1851. David Sr.'s occupation was a Labourer. Residence - Parc y Rosin.

1851 - Mary Evans, Lodger, Mar, 36, Laundress, born Trefeglwys (Residing at Llawryglyn, Trefeg)
David Evans, Lodger, 7, born Trefeglwys
          (No father present)

1851 - David Evans, Servant, Mar, 33, Waggoner Ag Lab, born Trefeglwys (Residing at Gwernafon)

1861 - David Evans, Servant, Widr, 42, Ag Servant, born Trefeglwys (residing at Neuaddllwyd)
David Evans, Servant, Um, 17, Ag Servant, born Trefeglwys

1871 - John Manuel, Head, Widr, 89, Pentioner 79 Foot, born Trefeglwys
David Evans, Son in Law, Mar, 52, Lead Ore Miner, born Trefeglwys
Sarah Evans, Daur, Mar, 50, Miners Wife, born Trefeglwys
John Evans, Grandson, 9, Scholad, born Trefeglwys

(David Evans & Sarah Manuel married 20th April 1861. David's residence is given as Neuaddllwyd which ties with the 1861 census but he is listed as a bachelor, not a widower. His father is listed as David Evans a Farmer).

Can anyone help me locate/solve -

The baptismal record for David in 1843/44 to David & Mary Evans. Failing that - was my David born to David & Catherine, but then ... who was Mary who David was with in 1851?

David Evans married Catherine Jones 10th May 1842 at Trefeglwys. David's occupation - Farmer. Davids father - David Evans a Farmer. Witnesses - John Jones & David Tilsley.

David Evans married Sarah Manuel 20th April 1861 at Trefeglwys. David's occupation - Farm Labouer. David's father - David Evans a Farmer. Witnesses - Joh Manuel & D. Tilsley.

ADDITION - David Evans married Mary Breese (formerly Humphreys) on 21st December 1850. David was a widower & Mary was a widow. David's residence - Gwernafon/Mary's - Llawrglyn which ties in with the 1851 census. David's father listed as David Evans a Labourer. Witnesses - Andrew Humphreys & David Tilsley.

I have also noticed a David Tilsley on another unrelated marriage in Trefeglwys around this time - was it someones job to witness weddings?

I have been trying to work on this brick wall for some time, so any help I would appreciate hugely.

Midlothian / Adam Sutherland died Edinburgh 1817, born .. ??
« on: Thursday 02 July 20 12:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

My 5xGG Adam Sutherland died 17th May 1817 at Leith South, Edinburgh. Age given on record was 69yo. On his death record it says - 'Adam Sutherland, Porter from the House of James Grant, Comb Maker, Baillie, Fyfes Close, Died of a Decline. Buried the side of the Grave one Yard South from Ainslie's Tomb Door. Aged 69'.

I know from his daugther's death record in 1860 that his spouses name was Janet - Maiden name unknown. But I have found a record for a Janet McDonald passing in 1806, aged 56. 'Jannet McDonald spouse of Adam Sutherland Porter from his house N. Gray's Close died of a Decline of Nature buried 3yds N. of ... Age 56'.

So that fits.

But I can't find the marriage for Adam & Janet, nor can I find baptismal records for any of their children. (I only for sure know of one child, Elizabeth/Betsy born c.1784 at Canongate according to census returns).

There are also only 3 baptismal records for Adam Sutherlands born/recorded between 1735 and 1755.

South Ronaldsay and Burray

Dunrossness, Sandwick and Cunningsb

All 3 places are very far away from Edinburgh, Golspie being the closest. Would it have been likely at this time for Adam/Janet to have relocated this far south? I understand that Adam's baptism may simply have not been recorded but I want to check all avenues.

If anyone can offer advice I'd be very grateful
