Armed Forces / non-commissioned officer of the Rifles
« on: Sunday 17 November 19 15:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I recently came across a short article newspaper article (archives) about my great great grandfather Mathias/Matthew Rickard (1808 - 1894) in which it states that he was appointed to a new job after qualified as a non-commissioned officer of the Rifles.  This article was published by the Limerick Chronicle in 1842 in Ireland.  My question is what army would he have served in and any idea of the resources I could look up.  Thank you very much.  Deirdre

Ayrshire / Sheila Fitzgerald
« on: Monday 11 November 13 06:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Looking for a Sheila Fitzgerald (born 1910-11) in Cork to Richard Fitzgerald and Jeanie Stewart.
Richard was from Lisbealad in Cork and Jeanie Stewart was Scottish.
They moved to Glasgow before or in 1913 as Sheila's brother, Richie, died aged 5 in Glasgow in 1913.
The third sibling, Jeanie, reported her father's death in 1942 in Glasgow.  She was also born in Cork in 1909-1910.  Have no idea of what became of her either.  Any hints??
Thanks, Deirdre
P.S. - Have tried Scotlands people website for the two bonnie lassies but nothing comes up.  Maybe they emigrated?? ???

Norfolk / Richard Grace born Lettergorman, Dunmanway, Cork
« on: Monday 11 November 13 06:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
Looking for a trace of my granduncle, born Lettrergorman, Dunmanway, County Cork in 1894.  His parents were David Grace and Ellen Fitzgerald.  The story goes that he became a teacher and moved to East Anglia in England to teach.  That's all I have - no town. Don't know if he married or settled back in Ireland...

Galway / Thomas Raymond Grace and Catherine Beirne
« on: Wednesday 18 September 13 10:20 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
My second cousin, Thomas Raymond Grace (born 1921 in Glenamaddy - parents Daniel D. Grace and Ellie (Ellen) Glynn - married Catherine Beirne (from Connaught...)
I've found some articles about Raymond on irishnewsarchives.ie - his brother-in-law was Val Beirne - wondering if Val is short for Valentine??  There seems to have been a lot of Beirne families in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon and Sligo.  Have found an Edward Valentine Beirne on the 1911 census Ireland.

I have found death notices for both of Thoma s Raymond's parents (Walkinstown, Dublin) and for two of his brothers (buried in Slievemore new)  but Thomas Raymond  Grace(a jeweller in Church Street, Glenamaddy in 1955), I can find nothing on his death or that of his wife, Catherine Beirne.
Could anybody out there shed any light on the situation.

Thanks very much,
Deirdre ???

London and Middlesex / Lucy Rickard nurse in Lunatic asylums
« on: Wednesday 04 September 13 15:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

My great grand-aunt, Lucy Rickard/Rickards, born in Dublin
in 1859, became, like her father in Ireland, a nurse in the Bethnal Green
lunatic asylum.  (I saw that on the 1891 England census).
The story goes that she never married - makes searching for info.
difficult.
Would like to know where she could have studied to become a nurse
and also if there's any link to the Bethnal Green lunatic asylum records
to see how long she syaed there.

Thanks very much,

Deirdre  ???

Ayrshire / Richard Fitzgerald credit draper Kilmarnock, Ayrshire and later Glasgow
« on: Wednesday 04 September 13 09:23 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Looking for any possible leads or information concerning a certain Richard Fitzgerald (born in Lisbealad, Cork, Ireland in 1875).  With a cousin of mine, Anna (who is also a member of rootschat), we recently discovered on ancestry that he was one of the beneficiaries of his sister's will in 1932.  At the time, his address is given in kilmarnock, Ayrshire in Scotland.  Recently we came across his death cert: died in April 1942, aged 66 - address is 23 Priory Road in Glasgow.  Widower of Jean Stewart.
Informant is daughter Jean A. Fitzgerald.

What we'd like to find out is when he married Jean Stewart, when she died and if there were other children apart from Jean A. and eventually when she was born and where.

Have spent a lot of time on Ancestry.co.uk looking for leads but to no avail.

The slightest leads would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Deirdre

Mayo / Pharmacy Achill Grace
« on: Wednesday 21 August 13 16:06 BST (UK)  »
My family have often spoke about a 2nd cousin surnamed Grace who owned a pharmacy in Achill.  The other day, on internet I came across a website of the current owner of a pharmacy in Achill and it is stated that he took over the pharmacy from Mr. Gerry Grace MPSI in 1990 so for me, that must be him!
What I am desperately looking for are the names of his parents, spouse and children (if any).
I have sent an email to current pharmacist to see if he can remember anything - so far, no news.
I presume Gerry Grace retired in 1990 - he may or may not be deceased...
Any hints??
Thank you,
Deirdre
