Lanarkshire / lookup please Lanarkshire
« on: Sunday 17 November 13 13:29 GMT (UK)  »
For 2 years I have been looking for my grandmother Janet Grays birth, also information on her husbands family, and getting nowhere. I managed to find a cousin in Scotland who told me that when Janet died her mother found a birth certificate for ....Janet stating that her name was Janet Anderson, not Gray...... Eureka!      I found her birth 15thJune 1896. Her father being John Gray Anderson (widower), mother Euphemia Hart (spinster)  who married  in Rutherglen 7/9/1894 .
He age 38, she 37.
That eureka moment has now vanished as apart from 1901 census I cannot find them on 1911 at all.

Also Johns parents Andrew Anderson and Mary Gray (thats where the Gray came from!) are nowhere to be found on census at all. Mary was not alive at the time of marriage 1894.
If anyone can please help find anything about them I would be grateful, I've probably missed something.
Sorry this is so long winded, I thought the more info the better... Cheers....  Maza

Peeblesshire / school records Stobo
« on: Wednesday 16 October 13 16:25 BST (UK)  »
I believe that there was only 1 school in Stobo throughout the 18th and 19th century.
In 1790's the population of Stobo was estimated at 318, with 24 pupils at the school.
Does anyone know if there were any school records of pupils attending.
My ancestors lived there (STODDART) (I have managed to research back to 1700's)

A James Stoddart b.18/1/1801 Stobo was a miller, would anyone know how to find how many mills were in the area about this time. His father another James was born in Stobo Miln 1775. I cannot find any such place! Any information would be great.

Thanks in advance... Maza

United States of America / Chicago kidnap about 1900
« on: Saturday 23 March 13 14:09 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching this for a friend.

Her grandfather Joseph Holmes, bp 6th April 1890 was taken to Chicago Illinois, from Derbyshire England, by his father (Richard Henry Holmes) when he was 10 years old. The presumption being, to see what it's like before Richard sent for his wife and other children.

The story goes that Joseph was kidnapped while in Chicago!!  That is all that is known. (I presume this is in 1900

All was resolved?? as both Richard and Joseph appeared on English census  later.

Would this have been in the newspapers (Chicago Tribune?) Would they be on emigration lists?

Who kidnapped a 10 year old boy, and why? ???

Any help or direction would be gratefully received. Thank you.... Maza

I'm very new to all this and would appreciate any help or direction as to how to find the following.
Death of George Sutherland b. 31/5/1813 in Midlothian Scotland. Always lived and worked in Andes Delaware New York, so presume died there.  The last details I have of him is on a 1892 census age 75.
Death of his 1st wife Agnes Cleland b.july/aug 1814 Midlothian Scotland. They emigrated to USA in 1842. She was on 1850 census but the 1860 census  had 2nd wife.
Death of George Sutherland (son) a few months old while on the ship emigrating. The first Census I have after this is 1850 he's not on it or any others.
Thank you in anticipation.  Maza (Uk)
