Hertfordshire / FLOYDs from Berkhamsted
« on: Sunday 25 November 07 19:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
My gg grandmother was Louisa FLOYD. According to LDS she was christened at (Great) Berkhamsted on 20 OCT 1811, Duaghter of Richard FLOYD and Sarah.
I have been trying to find out about her parents for years with no success at all. My gg Grandfather was William HOW christened 27 Sep 1801 at Abbots Langley, and I have traced the HOW family in detail back to the 1500s with some references earlier, but I have never found records of a marriage or of any FLOYDs.
It is particularly frustrating as Abbots Langley is the next village to the North of where I live and was born in Croxley Green.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Kent / GOODWINs from Kent
« on: Saturday 10 November 07 18:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I am trying to find out about a Thomas GOODWIN who married Elizabeth Lansdell at All Hallows The Great, London on 18 OCT 1791.
They were my 4g grandparents. They had at least 2 children: Eliza (my 3g) and Mahala  at Ash by Wrotham.
Whilst Elizabeth Lansdell is easy to trace, I cannot find birth details for Thomas Goodwin.
The only Thomas that I can find on LDS about the right time was bap 12 Apr 1761 at Greetham, Rutland, the son of Arthur Goodwin and Winefred. Although this seems baseless, Eliza had an illegitimate child by William Gilson of Greetham, so it is not just a shot in the dark.
I can find no other possibilities, and cannot confirm this one, so am a bit stuck just now.
If Thomas from Greetham is correct, then I am stuck again, as I can find no record of  Arthur and Winefred.
It has taken me several years to find Eliza's birth, as she is shown in 1841 and 51 as being from Mountfield, Sussex, where she married Solomon SELMES and lived for the rest of her life. I only found her a couple of weeks ago by the fact that one of her children was called Mahala, so I searched Mahala GOODWIN and found them both.
If anyone can help I would be most grateful.

Kent / Goodwins at Ash
« on: Tuesday 28 August 07 00:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I am trying to identify the father of my ggg grandmother Eliza Goodwin. She is recorded as being christened the 15 JAN 1797 at  Ash By Wrotham, Kent. Father Thomas Goodwin, and mother Elizabeth Lansdell (from Bexhill, Sussex)
I am trying to find out where Thomas came from, and how many children they had.
I know there was one other daughter (Mahala Goodwin), and that they married at All Hallows The Great, London on 18 Oct 1791.
There was a Thomas born in Greetham, Rutland (christened 12 Apr 1761) who was 2 years older than Elizabeth, who is a likely candidate, but I cannot be sure.
This is not just a vague guess, as Eliza later had an illegitimate child with William Gilson from Greetham before settling down and marrying Solomon Selmes at Mountfied, Sussex.
The Gilson  family had connections with the Frewen family of Brickwall, Northiam, Sussex, but I need to try and find out what the connection was; why Thomas would be in Kent married to a girl from Bexhill; what was the relationship between the Gilsons and the Goodwins; and whether Eliza was actually a cousin of William Gilson.
Any info at all would be greatly appreciated.

Hertfordshire / Thomas HOW c1766 Watford area
« on: Thursday 23 February 06 16:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I am trying to find birth/christening details for Thomas HOW, who married Sarah Lewis on 20 Feb 1786 at Watford.
I have detailed descent for him, but cannot find his origins. I am trying to link the Watford and Bushey HOW trees with my Abbots Langley HOW tree. There is a connection somewhere, and Thomas may be it.
I would be most grateful if SKS could help me, as I have been trying to batter this brick wall for over a year. ;)

Sussex Lookup Requests / Moses Henry SELMES
« on: Wednesday 25 January 06 00:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I amtrying to find any records for a Moses Henry SELMES who married Ellen Taylor on 31/7/1872 at Ockley. Ancestry says he was born in March quarter 1848, in Battle district, but after that he seems to disappear. I suspect he may be a son of Spencer SELMES, who moved to Ockley between 1855 and 1856, but can find no record of him on any census or BMD.
Can SKS help at all? I'll be your best friend :-*!!

Dorset Lookup Requests / John ALLEN m Susannah
« on: Wednesday 23 November 05 23:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I am looking for a marriage. John ALLEN married Susannah c1812 at Corfe Mullen, or nearby. They were my ggg grandparents. There seems to have been another John ALLEN and Susannah having children at the same time at Wimborn Minster, but I cannot find a marriage for either of them.
Their first child (John ALLEN) was baptised on  18 May 1813  at Corfe Mulen.
I am also looking for John's parents and birth/christening. but can find nothing.
Any help would be muchly appreciated.

Hi
I have been trying to locate Joseph DAWSON (my ggg grandfather) for a couple of years.
He was born c1775, and is recorded at his marriage as having been born in Levington.
He married Mary MAYHEW of Wissett on 08 Jun 1809 at Levington, but I can find no trace of him before then at Levington. The witnesses at their wedding were: John DAWSON and Sarah PARSON.
Working on the theory that the witness is often a brother, I looked for John DAWSON, and found John and Elizabeth DAWSON, both born in Wissett at the right time to be siblings, but no sign of Joseph. Their parents were John DAWSON and Grace, which would fit in with the fact that Joseph's first son was called John.
Joseph was a farmer and landowner. His first son was Joseph Mayhew DAWSON, and the next one was John. He was the resident of Stratton Hall, near Levington (where his family were born and grew up), and his brother William (my gg grandfather) had 2 windmills; one at Rushmere St Andrew, and one at California (Ipswich), and I know that they were a wealthy family.
I suspect that they originated around Wissett, but cannot be sure.
I have looked through the parish records for Levington, and found very few DAWSONs until Joseph's children were born.
I do not know where to look next, and do not have access to the Wissett parish records.
I would be most grateful if SKS could find a birth/christening for him.
His wife Mary MAYHEW was christened in Wissett on 22 Jul 1787, her parents being Robert MAYHEW and Elizabeth STOCKS (married 14 Aug 1782) at Wissett. Likewise, I can find no trace of either of either of them.
There were 3 other MAYHEWs (Nathaniel, William, and Samuel) having children in Wissett at the same time as Robert, but I can find no BDM for any of them either.
They too were all farmers of some standing, so it seems most strange that I can find no record of any of them.

It would be great if anyone could find any trace of either family, as I have been banging my head against this particular brick wall for a long time.

TIA (Thanks in Advance)

Herts Completed Lookup Requests / HOW/FLOYD marriage lookup please
« on: Thursday 13 October 05 15:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi
My gg grandparents were William HOW (bap 27 Sep 1801 Abbots Langley) and Louisa FLOYD (bap 20 Oct 1811 Gt Berkhamstead), and I have been trying to find details of their marriage. I do not get the chance to get to HALS, and would be most grateful if SKS could look it up for me.
Many of the HOWs were Baptists, which may mean there is not a record of the marriage.
I know that Louisa's parents were Richard Floyd and Sarah, but have been able to find no trace of either of them. Hopefully marriage alleg or something similar may give me an inkling as to where to try next!

Thanks in Advance

Worcestershire / Court prosecution records
« on: Sunday 09 October 05 18:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi
My great grandfather was William Henry MAYO (1875 - 1953). He lived in a large house in Malvern. He was amongst other things, an estate agent, and an auctioneer.
During the depression of the 1930s he was sent to prison for bad debts, and I wonder whether anyone knows how I can find details of the court case etc.?
