Europe / Interpreting Concentration Camp Records?
« on: Monday 08 February 21 16:33 GMT (UK)  »
Afternoon all.
I am after some specialist assistance with interpreting some of my G.Uncles (Mieczyslaus Leszczynski) concentration camp records.
I am researching my Great Uncle's movements before he met his sad end in Dachau Concentration camp on 5th October 1942 aged 23.
This is what I know:
Mieczyslaus Leszczynski.
Father Franciszek, mother Barbara (Zaszkiewicz) and sister (my Grandmother) Wladyslawa.
Born 30.8.1919 in Wojska, Poland and lived in Chelm, near Lublin, Lubolska 76.
Served in the Polish army from 1937 in the horse drawn artillery (no idea of unit but trying to identify).
I think that he may have failed to escape with other Polish units into Romania in 1939 and so attempted to blend back in as a civilian. He is listed as a 'gardener' and as a 'student' on his camp records so suspect he attempted to conceal the fact he was a soldier. He is listed as a 'schutzhaftling' - protective custody prisoner i.e. seen as a threat to the Germans.
From what I can make out from the attached (I think) this is his time line:
11.02.40 - Picked up in Sanoc, southern Poland by the Stapo (Police?).
10.8.40 - 19.11.40 - Sachsenhausen
19.11.40 - 30.5.41 - Neuengamme
30.5.41 - 5.7.41 - Dachau (number 25985)
5.7.41- 12.3.42 - Buchenwald
12.3.42 - 17.8.42 - Natzweiler
17.8.42 - 5.10.42 - Dachau (new number given - 34621)

I have attached the records I have been able to download from the Arolsen Archives. I am struggling to understand the German on these records so am after some help if possible?

Any help that can be given would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Anthony

Europe / Replacement Polish WW2 medals
« on: Wednesday 22 October 14 20:11 BST (UK)  »
A long shot and not even sure correct forum but am looking to find a reliable producer of replacement Polish WW2 medals.
My Grandfather Konrad Paszkiewicz flew with the RAF during WW2 and was awarded along side the usual British medals (39/45 star, Air Crew Europe star, Defence Medal, War Medal 39/45) several Polish medals these being Virtuti Militari 5th Class, Cross of Valour and 2 bars, Air Force Medal and 3 bars.
I have a set of miniatures of all (excluding the bars) - the originals sickeningly were stolen many years ago and are now no doubt split up and in a private collectors collection.
My question is does anyone know if or where it is possible to obtain replica medals of this type or perhaps point me in the right direction?

Many thanks in advance,

Ant

Seasonal Greetings to One and All!http://www.rootschat.com/forum/Smileys/christmas/cheesy.gif
Attached is a document dated 24th August 1850 (I think) the problem is the no one knows in what language it is written and therefore what it says?
The sealed letter was found under the floor boards of the Crescent in Buxton, Derbyshire during renovation work and copy was handed to me by my Father in Law to post on this web site.
My request please is can anyone decipher the letter and identify the language in which it is written in?
Many thanks in advance.

World War One / Pte 16145 Arthur G Bates, Northants
« on: Saturday 04 May 13 10:00 BST (UK)  »
Morning all,
Northants expert please?!
Another local man whose service I would like confirming if possible please - have his record but his early service is difficult to read.
2 questions really - anything further to glean from his service number that I haven't already established? Does anyone have access to the 1st Battalion's diary/history for the period March  November 1916 - I know they were heavily involved in Battle of the Somme but would like some more detail if possible please?
This is his story as far as I can make out:
Pte 16145 Arthur George Bates;
Enlisted Northampton 19/10/14
Posted 8th (service) battalion 20/10/14
Embarked France 25/03/15
Posted 2nd Battalion.
Wounded - G.S.W. both legs and hand 9/5/15 - Auber Ridge
Home 15/5/15 until 15/3/16
Embarked 16/3/16
Joined 1st Battalion Northants 21/3/16
Appointed L/Cpl 4/11/16
KIA 24/11/16
Next of kin (sister) notified 12/12/16
If anything further could be added I would much appreciate it.
Many thanks,

Ant

World War One / 307 & 297 Siege Batteries, Royal Garrison Artillery Jan 1917 - Sept 1917
« on: Saturday 09 February 13 09:51 GMT (UK)  »
All,
looking into the service record of Gnr/Signaller 142011 Ernest Johnson.
He died 25/12/18 whilst serving with 445th (S) Battery, RGA whilst in Salonika. However prior to this he had served with 307th (S) Battery RGA between 24/01/17 and 01/04/17 and then 297th (S) Battery RGA 01/04/17 until he was invalided out on 19/08/17 - I think due to being gassed.
Can anyone help shed light on the movements of the 2 units above please during 1917?
I have attached part of Ernest's service record to help.
Many thanks in advance,

Anthony
