The Lighter Side / World War Two. Plum Jam From Taunton, Somerset
« on: Saturday 29 December 18 17:01 GMT (UK)  »
During the Blitz my late father's family moved from Portsmouth to Taunton having been bombed out twice in ten days. His only surviving brother has always had a liking for plum jam. I gave my uncle a jar of home made jam yesterday evening and he then started telling us about his quest. This is the first time we have heard this story. It seems that he has spent the best part of seventy-seven years trying to find a plum jam like that he tasted in Taunton. It seems every type he has tried has been lacking in the special taste. He cannot remember if the Taunton jam was bought in a shop. Although he does know that it was not rationed. Needless to say we sat there speculating as to what the hidden ingredient might have been or if it was produced by the Women's Institute.

So, are there any experts around who know about cooking at this time? Or, someone who is an expert on local cooking? If so, please could you suggest what the special taste was created by?

He has a significant birthday next year. It just might make it into the cake! Thank you.

On a record for a coastguard in the mid 1800s under the term rating he is described as Caps Hold. Does anyone know what this abbreviation means? Thank you.

Australia / Finding a living relative in New South Wales
« on: Tuesday 04 April 17 11:15 BST (UK)  »
I hope I am doing this correctly. I help with a family history group at my local Age Concern. A lady joined a few months ago you is trying to trace her half sister. My friend was born after the half sister, lets call her Ms X and does not have any memory of her. But my friend and Ms X have an older half sister with very clear memories. The oldest half sister has been trying to trace Ms X for many years. She even visited Australia. Neither the eldest half sister or our group have been succesful. Ms X was adopted within the family and taken to New South Wales in 1950. She lost contact with her adoptive family in the mid 60s. With the tight restriction on Australian records we have not been able to trace Ms X after this date. Newspaper archives do not contain any information. The group has run out of ideas. So, we created a Facebook. Unfortunately none of us are active enough on Facebook to get many shares. We are now considering an advertisement in a New South Wales newspaper. Can anyone recommend one? Also, is there a particular day we should ask for it to be displayed? Obviously my friend and our local Age Concern know I have written this. Thank you for sticking with it this far! It is a complicated story and this is only a snippet.

I have traced a marriage for a member of my family to Rostrevor in County Down. Am I right in thinking this would be in the registration district of Newry?
Thank you

World War One / Middlesex Regiment Aliens
« on: Saturday 06 February 16 11:27 GMT (UK)  »
The 1st Infantry Labour Corps of this regiment appears to  have been formed on 6th March 1917. The unit seems to have left for France about that time. On 17th January 1918 it is recorded in Hansard that a question was raised in the House of Commons about the dreadful conditions these men were enduring in France. Does anyone know the movements of the corps? What tasks were they were carrying out? What were the dreadful conditions that marked them out from what other troops were experiencing?

Also, the man we are researching who transferred into this corps received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. As he was born in Danzig he was classed as an alien. Therefore his medal card does not mention a Theatre of War. So, does anyone know how he may have qualified for the Victory Medal?
Thank you

World War One / Note on Medal Card
« on: Tuesday 06 October 15 16:43 BST (UK)  »
I have a copy of my great uncle's medal card. Next to the details of his Victory Medal under Remarks it says ClZ 12-10-19. Probably something very obvious. Please could someone tell me what it means? Thank you.

Isle of Man / iMuseum Newspaper Archive
« on: Thursday 11 June 15 19:33 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have a subscription for the Newspaper Archive at the imuseum? If so, I am wondering if it would be ok to ask if they would check a Probate report for me? I want to know how much my 3x great grandmother's "estate" was worth. Family story is that she owned a substantial hotel. I think  for a while she ran a common lodging house. It is one of those stories that grew and grew! Thank you.

The Common Room / Birth Registration 1900
« on: Thursday 29 January 15 16:10 GMT (UK)  »
When registering a home birth in 1900 what evidence would be needed to confirm the date and address? Would the midwife have completed a form? Or,  would the information supplied by the parents been accepted without verification? Thank you.
