Australia / Just when you thought you'd seen it all

Under changes by the Qld State Government, plans are now afoot to allow changes to birth certificates

Under the changes, the terms 'mother' and 'father' would be optional and people would be able to switch their gender every 12 months.

They jest - or some very odd bureaucrats in Qld

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Unknown date of this little cutie
« on: Thursday 24 March 22 09:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks,

Sorting out some of my pics and found that I don't have a date for this little girl.

Any idea of when the picture may have been taken might help in identifying her.

Feel free to play with her - she looks like she needs some love & attention as she seems sad  :(

Thanks for your help - sorry I can't give you her name but that's what I'm looking for as well!

Apologies if it's a bad scan but it's all I have!

Armed Forces / Military Prisons - 1780's
« on: Tuesday 11 January 22 00:19 GMT (UK)  »
Would anyone know what UK Military Prisons were in use in or about late 1700's (1775-1799)?

Is it likely that there would be a list of inmates anywhere?

I'm investigating a suggestion that the formation (in England) of the N S W Corp consisted of predominately military prisoners or, at least, recently paroled prisoners.

Thanks

 Hi
Would anyone know where to find, or how to access, a copy of the PR's for Staindrop, Durham burial records PRE 1760.

I see Freereg has some transcripts but nothing earlier than abt 1760.

Suggestions would be very much appreciated

Thanks

Australia / Tasmanian Convict - Conduct record
« on: Saturday 27 November 21 11:10 GMT (UK)  »
I have the following record for James Hollis, a convict to Tasmania arrived 1825 on Sir Chas Forbes (convicted 1820)

https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-19$init=CON31-1-19p55

I can read some of the Conduct record (not the best behaved convict I've seen!) but there appears to be further information written in RED sideways on this document. I'm having trouble reading it - could anyone make sense of this for me please.

Thanks

Australia / NSW - St Mary's Cathedral 1855 ... or NOT!
« on: Wednesday 10 November 21 10:35 GMT (UK)  »
I have a copy of a burial record (not a Death Cert) for 1855 at St Mary's Cathedral Sydney (Catholic).

I'm surprised at the Church and am wondering if I have the wrong record or is this record actually from a different church?
Burial for SURNAME: BUCKLEY Forename:Mary.... recorded twice on NSWBDM-
Reference Number or "V" number/s recorded as
1335/1855 V18551335 143
&
153/1855 V1855153 120

As far as I know the family was Protestant, not Catholic, & the burial says her abode was the Benevolent A[sylum]. Maybe that had something to do with the church used for the burial.
Unfortunately Benevolent Asylum records online start in 1856 (oh so close!)

Is there any way of ascertaining which church the burial occurred at (just in case the record was mistranscribed)

I know I'm clutching at straws but I live in hope  ;)

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Occupation in early 1800's COMPLETED Thanks
« on: Thursday 14 October 21 02:13 BST (UK)  »
We have 5 occupations - all look easy enough to read

Cordwainer, Carpenter, Tilerge, Founder & Laborer

What is TILERGE?

Looks like it could begin with "F" (as in Founder) but maybe it's an old version of a Tiler?

Can't think of what else it could be.

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Thanks
