Yorkshire (West Riding) / Samuel and Ruth Varley Family History
« on: Friday 07 August 20 14:19 BST (UK)  »
Samuel Varley married Ruth Shaw in 1873, and lived their married life in Wilsden. According to the family Bible, between 1873 and 1890, there were 9 children, of which only Reuben had died by the time of 1911 Census. However the original of 1911 census for those still living at home in West View Cottage, Wilsden and signed by Ruth, shows total number of children born as 10, 8 still living and 2 who have died.
Can anybody say for certain if there was a 10th and who this might be
Thank you

Yorkshire (West Riding) / William THORNTON'S wife now COMPLETED
« on: Friday 19 July 19 15:26 BST (UK)  »
William Thornton was born in Hunslet during quarter 2 of 1849.
In 1871 Census he is living with his mum Sarah and brother David in Swaine Court, Headingley cum Burley, Leeds.
In 1881 Census William is married to Sarah E, and with their sons Arthur and George W, they are running a pub in Leeds
Between 1871 and 1881 I cannot find a marriage for a William Thornton which agrees with his wife's name.
However in 1901 Census George is boarding with his grand father Robert L Tyzack in Leeds. Robert has a daughter Sarah Elizabeth Tyzack but is she the wife of William?
During 1871 and 1881 the only marriage which fits Sarah is to George Morley in 1875. I cannot find a marriage for Sarah Elizabeth Morley which fits.
So was there ever a marriage between William and Sarah and if so what became of her marriage to George Morley?
Any help would be appreciated

Robert Stephen Wright was born in 1868, being registered in Northallerton. He married his first wife, Emma Jane Scanlon, whilst serving in the army in India in 1894. They had the following children:
Robert Stephen, Emily, George William, Olive May, Albert Edward, John Arthur, Mary Alice and Norman.
After a tour of Ireland, in the early 20th century, the family settled in Bradford, where Emma died shortly after the birth of Norman. In 1911 census, the family were living at 38, King Street. At number 44, King Street, at the same time were living my Great Grandmother, Blanche, with my Grandfather, John William, my Great Grandfather, James having died in 1910. A friendship obviously took place because in 1915, Blanche married Robert Stephen, but it only lasted a short time because Blanche died in 1916. When Robert Stephen junior married Mabel Martin in 1919, my Grandfather was a witness, signing the marriage certificate.
It would be a pleasure to meet existing members of Wright family and share my findings with them.
Thank you

« on: Tuesday 10 November 15 10:03 GMT (UK)  »
  Good Morning,
James Thornton was born on 28th February 1824 and christened on 16th May in Heckmondwike, England. On 10th October 1847, in Leeds he married Sarah Ann Mallinson Swaine, 1823 - 1873. In 1851 Census, they are living in Kirkstall, with their sons William and George. They had two more children, David in 1853, and Mary Ann in 1854, both born in Leeds. After this time James left his family for Australia, where he married again in 1858 to Sarah Gillard in Ballarat, Victoria. But when did he Arrive? He may have lived at Ballarat all his life as all their children were born there: Jessie, 1859, William, 1860, Charles, 1861, Annie, 1862, Jessie Adelaide 1864, Emily, 1867, Walter Charles 1869, and Hubert James in 1871. Sarah Gillard died there in 1896, as did James in 1908, Jessie in 1859, William in 1860 and Charles in 1862. Not sure where Sarah is buried but the other four are buried in Ballarat old Cemetery as is James second wife, Amelia bennett, 1822 - 1908.
Can anybody please help me to fill in details of their lives in Australia?
           Thank you

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Midgley Family of Gomersal COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 27 June 15 12:33 BST (UK)  »
Good Afternoon,
George Midgley, was born in 1805 in Birstall, parents being Paul and Rachel, nee Broscomb. In 1827, he married Mary Machell in Bradford, and had numerous children, including Mary, born in 1834.
In 1861 Census, the three are living at Holme Lane Road, Gomersal. Included in the family are:
James, born in 1852, grand son of George and Mary
Martha, born in 1855, grand daughter of George and Mary
Bessy, born in 1857, grand daughter of George and Mary
In 1871 Census, the family have moved to Beck Lane Batley, but James has now become the son of George and Mary, and Martha and Bessy, daughters
Trying to resolve this I have looked at the birth records of all three children and they have father Midgley, and mother Mary Midgley
Could all three be the children of Mary, born 1835, and not of George and Mary?
          Thank you
