Europe / Germany: deciphering/translating some words on a military list
« on: Friday 19 April 19 23:53 BST (UK)  »
I understand some of this document which lists a member of the military reserve in 1914. Can anyone help with the occupations of the recruit and his (adoptive) father which look the same - column 8 and bottom of column 5. Also I'm curious what the 'remarks' at the bottom are about.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Birthplace? (at sea) 1881
« on: Sunday 07 April 19 02:55 BST (UK)  »
This is part of an 1881 census household in Sheffield (UK). The second line is for Thomas HART and the ex soldier above is his father Richard. Can anyone make anything of the word before 'at sea' in the birthplace column?

In about 1846 a sibling was born in Calcutta. As you can see, this military family moved around a lot. Both parents were born in Ireland.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / looking for a date
« on: Thursday 31 July 08 12:43 BST (UK)  »

This is the first time I have ventured into this part of the site. I would be grateful for any comments on the following photograph.

This photograph was almost certainly taken in Denmark.
The back is blank.
The sitter (Juliane Louise DEMANT nee HORNUNG) was born in 1834 and she married in 1861.

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / 1891 look-up HAWDON
« on: Tuesday 12 February 08 14:03 GMT (UK)  »
I would be grateful if SKS could help me solve this little conundrum...

I have found this GRO marriage at FreeBMD

GRO Marriages SEP Qtr 1885
HAWDON Charles Henry
ALCOCK Fanny Ellen
Caistor 7a  974

and this looks like the family in the 1901 census index, assuming "Ellen" is Fanny Ellen...

1901 census index
census place: Gt Grimsby
Charles H Hawdon 48  Watchmaker Shop Keeper Lincs Grimsby
Ellen Hawdon 40   Lincs Cleethorpes
Sidney Hawdon 11 Lincs Grimsby
Alexander Hawdon 7 Lincs Grimsby

However, I think Fanny Ellen was born in Sheffield. Here she is in 1881 living with an uncle and aunt:

1881 census
PRO Ref RG11    Piece 3272    Folio 73
92 Cleethorpe Road
Clee With Weelsby, LIN

Charles ALCOCK Head Marr 53 Fish Salesman Burton Joyce, NTT
Mary A. ALCOCK Wife Marr 56 Fish Salesman Wife Bolham, NTT
Fanny ALCOCK Niece Unm 20  Sheffield YKS

so... would SKS be able to find the HAWDON family in the 1891 census to see whether it lists Cleethorpes or Sheffield as her birthplace.

I have considered the possibility that Fanny might have died and Charles remarried to an Ellen, but I can't find those events in the GRO. (and Ellen is the right age to be Fanny Ellen).

Thanks in advance :)

Occupation Interests / Crockford's Clerical Directory Look-up? (19thC: CORVAN)
« on: Monday 07 May 07 11:14 BST (UK)  »
(asking for a non-subscriber correspondent...)

general question:
did the early Crockford's cover Ireland?

specific question:
would sks be able to look for the following two people, father and son:

John CORVAN 'Archdeacon of Ferns, Wexford' died in the 1870's.

John CORVAN aged 61 in 1901, 'Clergyman in the C of E'
His ministry may have been partly or wholly in Ireland. I suspect he did not have a position in 1901.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / KNOWLES George 1841/51 Bolton le Moors
« on: Saturday 08 July 06 01:23 BST (UK)  »
George KNOWLES cotton spinner married Ann STEAD (bn 1820) in 1840 in Bolton le Moors. I do not yet know where they were born - there are several possible Ann's in 1881.

Their daughter Mary Fishwick KNOWLES was born in Jan 1843. I am told they also had a son called Ernest.

Is it possible to find this family in 1841 and 1851 ?!

Thanks for any help  :)

Somerset Completed Lookup Requests / 1891 WILLIAMS in (East) Huntspill
« on: Thursday 25 May 06 16:56 BST (UK)  »
I'd  be grateful if someone could find this family in 1891:

1881 info: Withey Road (Huntspill, Somerset)
Edward WILLIAMS 54  Vicar of Huntspill   Hascombe  SRY
Emma B. WILLIAMS 32 Dublin, IRE
+children Rowland, Hilda Mabel, and (born after 1881) Ruth.
and maybe more  :)

Edward was still Vicar in 1901 so they should be there, unless he was taking a Sabbatical!

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / 1841/1851 WILLIAMS (in Hascombe?)
« on: Wednesday 24 May 06 09:12 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to get to grips with the following family, with children baptised  in Hascombe in the 1820's. Are they still in Surrey in 1841/1851?!

William WILLIAMS birth details unknown (Priest in the Church of England)
Sophia Ann Catherine WILLIAMS (nee LAWFORD) bn 1791, chr Southwark 1808
Mary Easter WILLIAMS chr Hascombe 1823
Edward WILLIAMS chr Hascombe 1824
Daniel Rowland WILLIAMS chr Hascombe 1829

Also, does anyone have access to a list of incumbents of Hascombe Parish Church ? - I am guessing that William WILLIAMS was Rector or Curate there.

Thanks for any help  :)
