Essex Completed Lookup Requests / John Gilder - 1788
« on: Friday 29 June 07 13:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I've had a look for this birth myself, without any luck so I would be very grateful if someone could help me find the birth and/or marriage of John Gilder. Census returns put his year of birth at about 1788 and the place as Thaxted, Essex.

His wife's first name was Sarah. She was born in Essex cica 1800 (according to the 1841 census). She has died by the 1861 census. (The 1851 for Thaxted is missing)

Thank you very much in advance.

Completed Census Requests / Ancestry searches
« on: Thursday 21 June 07 13:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Is anyone else finding that the searches on ancestry aren't returning hits that are there? I was just searching an enquiry from someone on here and put in Thomas Johnson, born 1827+/- 5 years, residence Yorkshire for the 1841 census and it returned no matches. But when I take out Yorkshire, loads of hits are returned, some of them having Yorkshire are the county

 ??? ???

does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?!

Modified: is it because I had exact matches ticked? I thought that only affected the name though?

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Some advice please
« on: Monday 18 June 07 12:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'd relly appreciate some thoughts on the following problem. I have been looking for the parents of Sarah Ann Bevis (born c.1841). Sarah Ann tends to call herself Ann.

1901 census: born c.1839 in Fyfield. Living with her daughter, son and son-in-law in Navestock.
1891 census: born c.1841 in Willingale Doe. Living at Ongar Workhouse.
1881 census: born c.1841 in Willingale Doe. Living at Ongar Workhouse.
1871 census: born c.1840 in Willingale Doe. Living at Ongar Workhouse.
All registered under Ann.

I have her daughter Elizabeth's birth cert where she calls herself Sarah Ann.

The only possibility I have for her as a child is as follows:
1851 census: Sarah Bevis, 9 years old, born Fyfield (lodger with a family, along with her brother Isaiah)
1861 census: Sarah A Beeves, 19 yrs old, born Fyfield. (living with her father James and brother Isaiah)
Both in Willingale Doe.

Seems fairly simple except in 1871, there is an entry:
Sarah Beives, 26 yrs old, born Matching Green, livng in Willingale Doe with her father James (whose age and pob are consistent with the James from the 1861 census)

Do you guys think that it's possible that Sarah was registered twice? Once as Sarah and once as Ann, or are these two different women?

Thanks very much in advance.

« on: Wednesday 06 June 07 13:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Would anyone who is going to the ERO please try having a look at the 1851 census for Great Chesterford for me please? I have ancestry but I think that it must have been written in invisible ink! I can hardly read it!

I am looking for the following family:
John French, b.c. 1792
Harriet French, b.c.1801
and some or all of the following children:
Arthur 1831
William 1832
James 1834
Lewis 1839
John 1842
Frederick 1847

Last known address from the 1841 census - Dark Lane, Great Chesterford

Many thanks in advance

I've just seen a posting on the Essex borad with Suffolk marriage strays - bride and groom from Essex. I've seen census strays referred to as well, but what does it actually mean?

The Lighter Side / Upsetting genealogy?
« on: Friday 22 September 06 17:19 BST (UK)  »
I was thinking about seeing the celebs getting a bit tearful on WDYTYA, and was wondering if anyone had found something out in their tree that had moved them to tears? Especially if it was far back - obviously when it it things about people you know then it's a bit different! (i.e. Colin Jackson's grandmother)

I've found things sad but it's never made me want to cry... am I just hard hearted??!!  :-\

The Lighter Side / Your thoughts please
« on: Sunday 17 September 06 16:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'd like your thoughts on something I turned up yesterday please.

I was looking for the christening of Henry Lagden, born c.1811, South Weald Essex. His place of birth is consistent through the censuses.

What I found was:

Henry, son of Ann Hawkins, born 8/07/1809, christened 30/07/1809, reputed father Henry *** it wasn't very clear but it looked suspiciously like Lagden to me.

I've had a look in the censuses for a Henry Hawkins born at the time and place and can't see one.

Do you think that this Henry Hawkins could be my Henry Lagden? and any thoughts on how I could proceed?

Thanks very much

Hi all,

I had a quick google, but didn't come up with what I wanted...

Is there anywhere that you can get a list of people awarded OBEs and the like?

Thanks
