South Africa / Children's Homes in Grahamstown
« on: Friday 08 March 24 14:41 GMT (UK)  »
Good day.  I am looking for anyone who has a connection with children who were in Woodville, Queen Alexandra or St. Michael's homes in Grahamstown.

Many thanks

England / Children's Overseas Reception Board
« on: Sunday 11 February 24 17:38 GMT (UK)  »
Between July and September 1940 children from various areas were sent overseas for safety. Amongst these were 353 children sent to South Africa.  I have managed to find the names of 345 who sailed on the SS Llanstephan.

It is believed that not all of the children returned to England, but rather stayed behind to start a new life in South Africa.

Would love to know whether anyone had a relative who came out with CORB but then chose to remain in South Africa.
Many thanks.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Name of the bride
« on: Tuesday 13 December 22 08:37 GMT (UK)  »
I would really appreciate some assistance with this. Matthew Maw married on 29 October, and his bride has been transcribed as Hencefaith.

In all the records of the baptism of his children the mother (his wife) is clearly recorded as Silence.  Could someone with experience in old handwriting please confirm her name.

Many thanks

Lincolnshire / Hencefaith Maw
« on: Saturday 03 December 22 14:48 GMT (UK)  »
I would appreciate any assistance in tracing the surname of Hencefaith who married Mathew Maw probably in Wrawby round about 1710 or possibly earlier. Matthew was born in approximately 1690.

Their son, also Matthew, was born in 1712 in Wrawby. Unfortunately I do not know the names of any of his siblings.

Many thanks.

Cambridgeshire Lookup Requests / Whittlesea - Gutridge / Guttridge / Gutteridge
« on: Friday 26 February 21 18:10 GMT (UK)  »
Thomas Gutridge was born in Whittlesea round about June / July 1819 (worked out according to dates on his regimental papers)

I have searched everywhere I can think of, using each of the different ways of spelling the surname, but have had no luck.

I would really appreciate any assistance in finding his baptism / names of his parents.

Many thanks.

Armed Forces / Service records 1840 - 1858 - COMPLETED
« on: Friday 26 February 21 18:02 GMT (UK)  »
Thomas Gutridge enlisted in January 1840 with either the 45th Regiment of Foot or the 45th Regiment of Infantry.  His service number was 1667.

I have his regimental papers from FindMyPast which are dated 1858 when he was discharged.  However these do not show where he served.

Would a service record be available anywhere, and would this possibly give his next of kin?

This is a topic I know next to nothing about, so would appreciate any assistance.  Thanks

Surrey Lookup Requests / John Pontifex 1771-1841
« on: Monday 20 July 20 18:39 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the marriage of John Pontifex 1771-1841 to Ann Barnard born between 1786 and 1779 who died in London on 10 November 1863.  Ann Barnard was born in Denston, Suffolk, and John was born in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire.

Their only child Ann Pontifex was born in Mitchem, Surrey on 14 April 1810, so I think it is possible that they married there round about 1808/1809.

There is another Ann who married a Pontifex born in 1779 but she was not born in Suffolk and died in February 1863 not November 1863.

Any help would really be appreciated.

Other Countries / Fred Wood - Mexico City
« on: Wednesday 03 June 20 18:05 BST (UK)  »
I would appreciate assistance in finding a death notice or details of the death of Fred Woods who is recorded in the British Consular Deaths 1936-1940, having died in Mexico City. The death is recorded as being in Volume 30 page 210.

He was possibly married to Maria Villar y Gonzalez, and had a child with her - Maria Elvira Woods Villar who was baptised on 28/1/1912 in San Miquel Arcangel, Miguel Hidalgo, Ciudad de Mexico.

His full names were Frederick Florestan Tresviso Woods, born about 1882 in Spain, but he used either Frederick/Fred/Florestan.

Many thanks

Evening.  I would really appreciate it if someone could give me an idea of the possible year that these  were taken.

My family has no idea who the people are. There are a couple of names on the back, and I would like to try and trace the family instead of just tossing them in the bin.

Many thanks
