Armed Forces / Reichswald Forest Cemetery, North Rhine-Westphalia
« on: Sunday 25 February 24 12:10 GMT (UK)  »
This is the largest CWGC cemetery in Germany for the fallen in WW2 and contains gravestones for around 7500 servicemen from British forces and other Allied forces. https://www.cwgc.org/visit-us/find-cemeteries-memorials/cem

We will be visiting the area in May and would be happy to take photos of gravestones in this cemetery of servicemen you are tracing.  This is something we have done before and found it touching that the stone for the airman we were looking for was placed alongside those of his fellow crew members.

My uncle's name appears on a memorial board at Groesbeek Cemetery, just over the border in Holland, which is principally for Canadian troops.  Sadly my uncle's body was never found, so he does not have a gravestone, just a mention on the memorial board.

The Stay Safe Board / Diary weekend ending 11th February
« on: Monday 05 February 24 15:44 GMT (UK)  »
Only just realised that this is a Leap Year!  ::)  I really must get a grip on things, but the days pass so quickly that it's hard enough just to remember which day of the week it is.
Rather a dull day here, though not cold or windy.

Tonight I'll be going to a talk about the National Coast Watch Institution by one of its volunteers who lives locally.  First started in Cornwall after several Coastguard stations were closed down by the government in the 1990s, there are now NCIs all around the UK, volunteers working alongside the coastguards.  Should be interesting.

Neighbourhood cats have discovered that my husband has dug over the veg patch and there's lots of lovely soil for them to come and do their business on - I am ready to throw jugs of water at the pesky things.  I'm a dog lover and I really don't like cats at all (sorry, cat lovers).

Sligo / James Mulgrue, Sligo
« on: Thursday 23 November 23 11:59 GMT (UK)  »
James was the father of George Mulgrue, who was born c 1843 in Sligo, according to UK census records.  Although I know quite a lot about George and his descendants, I only know from later censuses that George was born in Sligo, but not whether this was the city or county of that name.  He left Ireland to serve with the East Indies Company and never returned, spending the later years of his life in England.

I'm really looking for a birthplace for George, as my nephew will shortly be visiting Ireland and would like to see his ancestor's birthplace.  Can anyone help, please?

Europe / Hiby family of northern Germany
« on: Monday 11 September 23 16:45 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the family  of Wilhelm Hiby snr, whose children were Wilhelm jnr, Marie Louise and Lina. Looking online I have found birth years given for these three as 1835, 1842 and 1867, which doesn't seem right.  In a photograph of the three with their mother they all look to be under 10 years old and one little girl is a baby.  Confusingly I have found their mother's name given as Julie Stein,  but a Julie Stein is also shown to have married Wilhelm jnr in 1866 in Düsseldorf.  These are Ancestry and Family Search entries, so don't know how reliable they are. The family seems to have come from the Ruhr area of farming stock, though they later became rather wealthy, mainly through Lina's marriage to Carlos Otto in 1866.
Can anyone with access to the appropriate records help. please?

Europe / Hermann Goering's cousin?
« on: Sunday 10 September 23 18:34 BST (UK)  »
Marie Schuster, who owned the Haus Wylerberg in Beek, now in the Netherlands, but formerly in Germany, is described as a relative by marriage to Hermann Goering.  Their relationship is described in various ways, such as " H G's father was a cousin of Marie's aunt by marriage" or simply that Marie was H G's aunt.  We're struggling to ascertain the true nature of their relationship. can anyone help?  Marie's maiden name was Hivy.

Scotland / Clan membership
« on: Monday 03 April 23 15:16 BST (UK)  »
I was always told that the ancestors of my gt-gt-grandfather George Adamson, born 1806 in Ruthwell, Dumfries and Galloway, were members of the MacDonald clan, but looking at lists of clan membership surnames, that doesn't seem likely.  However my mother had a clan badge saying "Touch not the cat bot a glove", which is the Macdonald motto.  I read that they were a Highland clan, yet George was born a Lowland Scot.  I suppose it's possible that his ancestors came from further north, but I'm afraid I have no further evidence.

Can anyone explain this conundrum to me, please?

Technical Help / Nearly full laptop
« on: Sunday 20 November 22 16:31 GMT (UK)  »
My HP laptop (with Windows 10) informs me that it is now 97% full and I am busy trying to delete unwanted items, but without any significant reduction in the percentage, I have to say.  A year or two ago I installed Brave as my browser, changing from Microsoft Edge, but wonder whether to un-install Brave, since Microsoft won't allow me to delete Edge.

Any helpful suggestions?

The Stay Safe Board / Masks again
« on: Tuesday 25 October 22 11:41 BST (UK)  »
Some people are still wearing masks in crowded places, I know, but our local hospital has just issued a notice asking everyone to wear masks now when visiting the hospital.  They are obviously expecting a Covid/flu outbreak.

The Lighter Side / What the Dickens....?
« on: Sunday 10 July 22 12:53 BST (UK)  »
On a recent trip to Germany I met a German painter who claimed that he was descended from Charles Dickens.  Some time ago he discovered a book by Monica Dickens, Charles Dicken's gt-granddaughter, and when he turned the book over he saw a photo of a woman who looked very much like his aunt Louisa.  His father and grandfather were German, but lived in England for many years, running a butcher's shop.  Dickens had 10 children and I don't know how to proceed from here, so would welcome any helpful hints.  I'm afraid I don't have any further information about the painter's family, only know that he was born in Cologne in the 1950s.
