Armed Forces / Royal Marines
« on: Tuesday 09 May 23 11:36 BST (UK)  »
I've recently discovered my Great Grandfather's eldest brother at the time of the 1891 census was a Private within the Royal Marines. Stationed at the North Barracks, Royal Marines Depot, Walmer, Kent. I know he married during March 1894. A long shot I know. But, is there any ways and means I can discover information regarding his time within the Royal Marines? Thanks.

Please see attached a photo (WW2?) of the rear of an RAF transporter. Anybody please who can decipher the markings? Aircraft spare parts? I'm aware the photo is one of several relating to an aircraftman who was within 601 squadron. Thanks. Stay Safe.

World War One / Map Reference
« on: Thursday 14 January 21 14:28 GMT (UK)  »
A friend has asked me to research a relative who was KIA during WW1. According to the CWGC website Pte H Snow 9th Bn, Devons was KIA 6th Sep 1916. He is buried within the Deville Wood Cemetery, Longueval. During early September 1916 the 9th Bn came under sustain gun fire with heavy losses when they were attacking the German lines at Ginchy. It would appear Pte Harry Snow was one of those killed. As such, Harry along with many of his colleagues who were also killed were buried where they fell. These bodies were exhumed and reburied within the Deville Wood Cemetery. Accordingly, within the Burial Return paperwork the "Map Reference Where The Body Was Found" for each body there is a Map Reference of T.13.d. I have discovered a September 1916 grid map of the area. And yes the grid number for around Ginchy is 13. But, each map grid is 500yds square. Does the T and d of the Map Reference give information of where within the grid the bodies were originally buried? Or could please somebody explain what T.13.d refers to? Thanks Very Much. Stay Safe.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Dad and Gladys WW2 photo Request Please
« on: Tuesday 10 November 20 19:55 GMT (UK)  »
Attached is a photo of my Dad and his sister. 1939-40ish. He was at Dunkirk. So, unsure if the photo was taken prior to him being sent to Europe with the BEF Autumn 1939? Or after the evacuation June 1940? Few creases and dark areas. A tidy-up would be great. Thanks.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Fox Family 1919-20
« on: Monday 17 August 20 15:21 BST (UK)  »
Another b/w photo which has been in the family for 100yrs. My best guess is that it was taken about 1919/20. They were of farm labourer stock. Not 2 pennies to rub together!!!! The oldest boy, back right was born during 1908. The girl sat on her Mum's lap was born during 1918. The mark, upper chest area of Grandad, is where unfortunately the photo got stuck on the glass. At the time they lived near Cirencester, Gloucestershire, UK. If anybody please could possibly restore and colour it would be brilliant. Thanks in anticipation.
