Does anyone know if there are any census returns for Nelson, New Zealand, my husbands 4th Great Uncle William Pennock, his wife Hannah and their children Hannah, John and William emigrated under the assisted passage scheme in 1841. William arrived in 1841 and Hannah and the children arrived in 1842. I would like to be able to see what happened to them after that.
Many thanks

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Guernesey military puzzle, help needed please
« on: Saturday 18 July 15 15:46 BST (UK)  »
Hello you clever people  ;D I have an ancestor Robert Lawrence who was based on Guernsey between November 1878 and December 1883 so far I have been unable to find him on the 1881 census any ideas on how to proceed on this ?
Also I know he married Phoebe Blake at St Peter Port on Guernsey on 27 October 1881 (this information came from his Attestation form of 1861) however it only gives their names and the date and place of marriage not their marital status, fathers names and occupations or witnesses. Is there any way to find this out with out sending for a marriage certificate? If not how would I go about sending for this document please?
I realise this is a lot of questions and will be very grateful to any one who can shed any light on this little mystery for me.
Many thanks in advance

Armed Forces / Any idea when this photo may have been taken
« on: Wednesday 11 March 15 21:11 GMT (UK)  »
I have been told this by my Brother  is a photo of our Grandfather Alfred George Tracey born 1880 he enlisted in the Millitia in the 3rd Essex Regiment in 1898 aged 18.
In 1899 he joined the Essex Regiment and served in South Africa and Malta, being discharged in 1905.
Can anyone tell me roughly when this picture might have been taken please?
Is it likely that the soldier in the second picture is the same as in the first one? And if so when may it have been taken.
Many thanks in advance

FH Documents and Artefacts / What is this please
« on: Friday 06 February 15 22:53 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone please help me to find out what this medal is all about? It has a Kings Royal Rifle Corps insignia on the front and a man throwing a discus on the back it was among my Grandfathers effects when he died.
I am sure it was not his as he was in the Essex Regiment, but my Great Uncle was in the Kings Royal Rifle Corps in the first world war.
Any ideas ?
Many thanks in advance

World War Two / War time plane crash, how to find out more?
« on: Wednesday 04 June 14 22:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, I have just picked up my research again after a year or so break and am trying to find out more about Eric James Tracey born 1921 died 1945 while serving aboard HMS Puncher.
According to the Royal Navy research archive at http://www.royalnavyresearcharchive....RT/PUNCHER.htm Eric James Tracey was a crew member aboard barracuda MD837 which failed to return from a A/S patrol. Does any one have any ideas how I can find out more about this incident ? Eric James Tracey is named on the Lee Solent memorial as having no known grave, any help or advice would be most welcome.
Thank you very much.

The Common Room / GRO certificates, idea for you all
« on: Sunday 13 October 13 17:55 BST (UK)  »
Faced with the prospect of down sizing house soon and seeing the volume of certificates I have gained over the years it occurred to me that it would be a great idea to be able to send for a digital copy of a certificate to be sent to us via email not post.
This could work out cheaper than posting one to us, what do you all think of this idea? Or am I mad thinking this could be a viable alternative to a paper certificate?

Occupation Interests / Hy (Hi) Line driver
« on: Tuesday 10 September 13 11:06 BST (UK)  »
I have a parish marriage entry from 1893 with the grooms occupation looking like Hy Line driver, I have no idea what this might have been. My closest guess is a steam plough driver where they pulled the plough backwards and forwards between two engines, could this be right?
Any information welcomed  ;D

Occupation Interests / Fireman
« on: Tuesday 13 August 13 19:07 BST (UK)  »
Hello all, I wonder if you clever people can help me to determine what type of fireman my husbands GG Great Grandfather Edward Thomas Burton was?
I do not know if he was an engine fireman or a fireman putting out fires  ??? is there any way of being sure and any records I can look at?
He was born in 1825 and was listed as a fireman on his daughters death certificate in 1857, the family were living in Chelmsford, Essex at the time.
Hoping some kind person can point me in the right direction  :D
Many thanks

FH Documents and Artefacts / Marriage certificate question
« on: Monday 03 June 13 20:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, my parents married in the parish church of Great Braxted in 1954, on the certificate it states that they married "according to the rites and customs of the church of England by licence. Would this be the same as a superintendant registrars licence? Could there be some other document other than their actual licence I might be able to obtain?
Any help on this would be most welcome.
