Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / William PENNOCK (1847) - baptism image
« on: Monday 08 April 24 00:06 BST (UK)  »
Hello

William PENNOCK (later WRAY) was born on 22 June 1818 in Wetwang and baptised on 11 July 1847 in the Wetwang parish church. His mother was Mary PENNOCK. Mary married Benjamin WRAY later that year on 23 November 1847 in Great Driffield. Benjamin became the father and William used the name WRAY. The family moved to South Australia in 1850.

My question relates to the baptism. I have found three records of his baptism on FamilySearch, which I reproduce in full at the end of this message. Some of the recods (as transcribed) mention Benjamin. I am looking for an image of the original baptism registration? I want to know if Benjamin was actually mentioned on an original baptism, or whether this was later inserted. Are there any suggestions on obtaining an original image of the baptism register as registered in Wetwang? I believe the set from the Borthwick Institute for Archives might be the best source.

The FamilySearch site states I might be able to see an original image at a partner organisation, and I am making those enquiries here in Canberra.

William was the subject of another discussion in 2016 where some very helpful people helped find his birth registration (which I subsequently obtained a certified copy of) (https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=746456.msg5936899).

Thank you

Craig

Cumberland / Mary Elizabeth GRAHAM, born Maryport c1883
« on: Saturday 02 March 24 08:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hello. I am wondering if one of you kind people with knowledge of Cumberland could please help with this.

Mary Elizabeth GRAHAM was born around 1883 in Maryport, Cumberland, the daughter of Joseph GRAHAM. I know this from her marriage registration (under the name Mary Elizabeth MCGOVERN in South Australia in 1928). She married on 3 November 1928 aged 45 years (birth c1883). She died on 19 December 1980 aged 97 years (birth c1883). Further details on sources are available here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Graham-16368.

I am unclear which registration district Maryport would have been in, as Maryport itself is not a district (https://www.freebmd.org.uk/county-map.html).

Assuming the approximate year of birth and locality are correct, she could be one of the following (From FreeBMD):

Surname    First name(s)        District    Vol    Page
Births Mar 1882   (>99%)
GRAHAM    Mary Elizabeth        Penrith    10b   396
GRAHAM    Mary Elizabeth         Cockermouth    10b   510
Births Jun 1882   (>99%)
GRAHAM    Mary Elizabeth         Whitehaven    10b   601
Births Sep 1882   (>99%)
GRAHAM    Mary Elizabeth         Carlisle    10b   494
Births Dec 1883   (>99%)
GRAHAM    Mary Elizabeth         Cockermouth    10b   556
GRAHAM    Mary Elizabeth         Carlisle    10b   481
Births Mar 1884   (>99%)
Graham    Mary Elizabeth         Penrith    10b   446
Births Sep 1884   (>99%)
GRAHAM    Mary Elizabeth         Longtown    10b   490

Thanks for any guidance

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / NSW occupation
« on: Saturday 19 August 23 09:03 BST (UK)  »
Hello. I would grateful for any help with the father's occupation for William Shaw (1837-1908) in this 1901 marriage registration for his daughter, Mary Elizabeth? It is something like "Sterrstyper". Thank you.

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Place in Armadale

Hello. I am wondering if someone with local knowledge (or good cursive reading) could please point me to at what place Isabella BELL (1864-1869) was born within Armadale. Number 606 on the attached image. It reads something like Linton's lane? Thank you.

Glamorganshire / George TUCKER (1872-1960) - birth
« on: Monday 09 August 21 07:08 BST (UK)  »
Hello

According to his death registration (in 1960), George TUCKER was born in Ystradyfodwg, Glamorgan. According to his gravestone, he was born on 25 March 1872 (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/202094680/george-tucker). According to his marriage registration (in 1893), his father's name was Charles TUCKER. I do not know his mother's name.

Somehow he got to South Australia between 1872 and his marriage in Adelaide on 22 December 1893. It is unclear to me yet whether he came to South Australia with his family or not. There are no ready matching Charles TUCKER death's in South Australia.

I'm looking to confirm his birth from Welsh resources.

There are three possible births on Freebmd:

Births Mar 1872
TUCKER    George        Pontypridd    11a   358
Births Jun 1872
Tucker    George        Newport, M.    11a   224
Births Sep 1872
TUCKER    George        Cardiff    11a   268

Is there a way to find more information about these entries before ordering the registrations? I note GRO can seek to match information, but usually based on a Mother's Maiden Surname (which I don't have). The GRO website doesn't let you put in a date of birth or father's name.

Thanks for any pointers.

Craig

Hello all

This is part two of my thread https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=851239.0, and as suggested by Dave am posting the specific question.

Johann August Ludwig KAYSER (1836?-1910) was my great great grandfather.

I know from primary sources in Australia that he arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia (SA), on 15 August 1858 on board the brig Grassbroek (Grassbrook), having departed Hamburg on 25 April 1858.

He worked as a teacher in various schools for the SA Department of Education, 1862-1893, and as a headmaster at the state schools in Lyndoch and Brighton.

He married Amalie BEECKEN on 13 December 1862 in Adelaide SA and resided in Lyndoch Valley SA.

On 11 June 1866, he partitioned the Governor of South Australia to obtain the rights and capacities of a natural-born British subject. As part of these papers he claimed to have been born in Lautenthal in the Kingdom of Hannover and to be of 31 years of age (so born c1835).

His last residence was named “Lautenthal” in Hewitt Avenue, Rose Park Adelaide, SA. This obituary (in German) states he was born on 10 May 1836 in Lautenthal: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/230697742 ('Todes-Anzeige' Australische Zeitung (Adelaide SA) 23 February 1910 p5). According to his marriage registration he was the son of August Wilhelm KAYSER.

I am hoping to confirm these birth details from German sources. Also to know a little more about his parents.

Thank you for any pointers

Craig

Europe / Germany: Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen): Professional Researcher
« on: Friday 23 July 21 07:07 BST (UK)  »
Hello. I am hoping to contract someone in Germany to provide some professional help in dealing with the state archives and church records in Lower Saxony (eg Das Niedersächsische Landesarchiv). The location/period I am looking at is in Lautenthal, then in the Kingdom of Hannover, before 1858. I would be grateful for any pointers on where to start in finding someone reputable. Thank you.

Canada / Toronto Death Notices c1999
« on: Saturday 23 June 18 12:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I have a connection to someone who died ("suddenly") in Toronto on 9 November 1999. He was visiting from Australia, although the Adelaide (South Australia) newspaper death notices indicate he wasn't just passing through. So he have been staying with locals and working there temporarily. There may have been some local Toronto notices for him.

Can anyone please give me a pointer where to go for some form of notice index that might cover that period for Toronto?

I tried the Toronto Star Obituaries Home Page at legacy.com (which The Star redirects to). But these (and similar) online tribute sites don't seem to go back further than the mid-2000s.

Thanks for any thoughts

Australia / SLNSW / SLV
« on: Wednesday 14 March 18 06:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

Are there any RChatters who might be able to access personally and scan a few newspaper entries at either the State Library of New South Wales or State Library Victoria? I would gladly reciprocate in the collection at the National Library of Australia if anything there is wanted.

I have a few from both SLNSW / SLV that I'm trying to chase that are not available at the NLA or through Ryerson.  And, yes, I'm trying to get out of the Ask the Librarian fee, if possible! :D

If you can help, please PM me and I'll give further details.

Many thanks

Craig
