Ayrshire / What Occupation was a Stearer?
« on: Saturday 01 July 23 07:55 BST (UK)  »
Good morning,

I'm researching family in Kilmarnock, in the Riccarton district on the 1851 Census and have noticed several family members, some are young girls, and people at neighbouring addresses recorded as being a 'Stearer'.

Anyone any idea what this could be? I know the area had textile and shoe-making connections and wonder if a 'Stearer' could be connected to either.

Thanks in advance,

Looby :)

The death is registered in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire in 1876.

The only words I'm certain of are......overindulgence in drink  (bless her :'( )

United States of America / Civil War Veteran - any info please
« on: Sunday 04 December 22 19:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all -

I have a post regarding these images on the Photo Restoration/Date old Photos board https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=868043.0

An old photograph album has been given into my care. It's in a terrible state of repair - it was found during the renovation of an old building (in west of Scotland)
The album has been filled with a selection of postcards - some of landscapes/views, some novelty, some music hall performers but mainly family images. Sadly, virtually no names have been recorded - making it difficult to identify the people.
These two postcards intrigued me because they appear to have been taken in the US.
The elderly gentleman appears to be a Civil War Veteran and a Rootschatter has identified his hat badge as being of The Grand Army of the Republic.
Is there anyone who can give me any further information about the medals/ribbon he is wearing. I am wondering if I can establish which State he was living in?
The ladies look to be in some sort of costume? Any clues from their clothing?

Grateful for any suggestions. Thank you for reading.

The Common Room / "Cytherean" - term used in Scottish newspaper 1861
« on: Saturday 29 January 22 17:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hiya,

I'm doing some research, looking at newspaper reports in Ayrshire newspapers in 1860s.

I've come across a report of an assault -
"Marion Leslie, a Cytherean, pled guilty to assaulting the wife of Francis McGinty, a labourer..."

I wasn't sure what a Cytherean was or meant ??? A search online has informed me the term relates to : the planet Venus, the Greek island Cythera, Aphrodite/Cytherea goddess of love.
So, would the use of the word "Cytherean" in the above newspaper quote be a delicate euphemism for the word - prostitute?
If so, it's a new one to me.

Lanarkshire / Looking for East Grange in Carluke area? Thread Closed - thank you
« on: Saturday 11 December 21 08:07 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning.

A friend has bought an old postcard which has been posted in Sep 1905 and franked 'East Grange' .
The card is addressed to a Miss E Osborne, Overton Farm, East Grange.
Nothing else indicates where this place is.

I have found an Overton Farm at Crossford, Carluke. There are Osbornes on the 1901 Census recorded in Shotts District.
But I can find no reference online to an East Grange in this area of Lanarkshire which is odd considering the postcard bears a frank mark for this place indicating it must've had a post office.
Any ideas please?
Am I looking at the right area?

Hi folks.
Looking for help please.
I've attached a photo of a postcard a friend of my daughter's is desperately trying to make sense of.
I think the card is written is some sort of code - maybe a playful code used between boyfriend/girlfriend. The postmark is 1905.
I think the message begins - How do you like this one  - this is the first two words from first three lines....but , of course, I could be wrong.
Many thanks for any help

Wigtownshire / Looking for a death for Samuel McMail
« on: Thursday 18 November 21 23:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Samuel Hughes McMaill is born at Stranraer on March 22nd 1863 - the son of John McMaill and Margaret McMaill ms. Brown.
Margaret McMaill dies later that same year.
I can't find John and Samuel on the 1871 or 1881 Census.
Samuel marries on 1st August 1884
He marries using the name Samuel Cain McMail to Mary Dorman at Stranraer. His address on the marriage certificate is Lodge, Lochnaw Castle, Leswalt and he is a Mason Journeyman aged 22 (he's actually 21) . His parents names are as above. Only his mother is noted as deceased. The spelling of his surname has lost an L.
The marriage did not last long before the couple separated.
I believe I have found Samuel on the 1891 Census at Drummore in the parish of Kirkmaiden.
Samuel McMail  lodger   married   aged 28   mason  born in Stranraer
He is lodging in the household of a family called Johnstone.

I am looking for Samuel's death. I can't find him on the 1901 Census and I suspect he may have died young. I have reason to believe from a newspaper article he was sometimes known by the surname Cain. I have looked for his father John's death too and can't find him either.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for reading,
Looby :)
