Lancashire / Help - Can't find Belmont Road Workhouse, Liverpool on the 1911 census.

Please could somebody give me the Census reference I need ? I found the institution by accident on an earlier occasion, but have had no luck finding it today. I have wasted a ridiculous amount of time looking for it. Thank you in advance.

I recently found an ancestor married here and wonder if any photographs exist. I found a coloured postcard dating from around 1900 (?) on an internet site, but that's all. Anybody know of any photographs, please ?

The Common Room / GRO can't find the marriage

I ordered a Marriage Certificate for the marriage of Susan Clough and William Black from the GRO on 25th June. I found the relevant info on Freebmd: September qtr 1865, Tynemouth Vol 10b Page 363.. A reply arrived this morning which tells me that 'the person cannot be found' using that reference.

I know I have read of this sort of problem before - and of how it was solved, but cannot remember in detail. This is the first time I have had this happen. Advice, please.

Lancashire / Found 1871 census, but didn't fully record the address

I have been wading through loads of census info I found years ago, trying to file correctly and tidy up, but have discovered I have no exact street address for one of my 1871 census sheets. I downloaded the image in 2016 and the reference at the side is RG10/3793. The page relates to a family in North Toxteth, Liverpool, father John Doran, mother Grace, living in Holy Trinity Ecclesiastical Parish. They live in 4 Court, but I have not recorded anything else. Just carelessness I'm afraid. Can some kind person find them, please and tell me which street this Court belongs to ? I found the name Grace rare in Liverpool, so using that in a search may be the quickest way to locate the page I'm interested in.

I would be really grateful to anyone who can supply the missing street name.

Lancashire / Robert Harrison and Elizabeth Kneale marriage, Ulverston June Qtr 1874

This problem has been annoying me for a few months. As he is not part of my direct line, I have not investigated Robert until now. In the 1881 census, he is in Barrow in Furness working as a joiner, with a wife, Elizabeth. I would expect his marriage to be in a C of E church and the Freebmd website shows a Robert Harrison and an Elizabeth Kneale on the index for Ulverston, June Qtr 1874, Vol 8e Page 1110. Ulverston seems not be be covered on the Lancs OPC site, I cannot find the marriage on Familysearch and I am between subscriptions for Ancestry/FindMyPast. There also seems to be a problem with the page no shown on Freebmd.

Does anyone know where Ulverston marriages have been transcribed, please ? Elizabeth and Robert are both from Andreas, but I have failed to find the marriage there and Ulverston is close enough to Barrow to make this one plausible. Was Ulverston in Lancashire in the 1870s and 1880s ?

Armed Forces / Lincolnshire Regiment of Foot, 2nd Battalion

I have just been sent copies of original military records passed down the family. They relate to a Private William Kennedy, who is believed to have served in India and originally enlisted in Lincoln to join the Lincolnshire Reginent on 28th June 1879 in what looks like the 20th Brigade. A discharge certificate records thst he has served abroad for 4 yrs 329 days out of a total service of 6 yrs 158 days. He is then in the reserve for 5 years.

From what I can gather, the Lincolnshire 2nd Battalion spent years in India. Can anyone suggest where they would have been based ? I am guessing that this is the place where William spent his time in India - unless I have this completely wrong.

Lancashire / Anyone heard of a pub called 'The Millard Castle' ?

Once again, I'm checking out some family stories for other people. This one involves a pub which was supposed to be on the Dock Road and called the Millard Castle. I suspect it could have been in Liverpool or Bootle, as the person who is providing the information has never lived in the area and is just passing on what other family members said years ago. It was supposed to belong to Walkers and had that name post WW1.

Can anyone spot any information on it, please ? The main problem is just finding where it was.

I would be interested to know how straightforward anyone who has been on this website has found it to use ? It appears somebody has been entering a limited amount of Manx information, but before I create yet another account with a password, I wonder how much more can be viewed when you are logged in and not just using Google.

Durham / Can anyone find a photograph of East Rainton before the demolition post 1945 ?

My husband's mother's family lived in East Rainton from the 1870s onwards. He remembers visiting his grandparents when they lived in a house across the open space opposite the church in the 1950s. From what I understand, practically the whole village was demolished as being unfit to live in about the late 1940s, post WW2. Can anyone find any photos of what the village looked like before this, please ? We have taken a picture of the church where the family were baptised, married and buried. Should there have been photos taken by the local authority planners before the demolition of the houses took place ?
